WILLING PEOPLE

LUKE 1:26-33

He will reign over the house of Jacob forever,

 and of his kingdom there will be no end. (NRSV)

Luke 1:33

            If we think about the birth of Jesus and of all the subsequent events, we conclude that everything that took place was due to willing people. Mary and Joseph were willing to receive Jesus defying the customs and the evil misunderstandings of their time. The shepherds were willing to leave their work to celebrate the coming of the Savior. The wise men dared to travel the roads from afar to offer their gifts, and the angels were willing to give their songs to make that moment joyful.

            The first Christmas was possible because there were willing people; later Jesus’ life was filled with people who left everything to walk with Him, to serve the community and to begin a new way of living. All were willing people . . . but there were some who didn’t dare.

            Always keep in mind that God doesn’t use lazy people, that we have to dare if we want to make the Kingdom present in our midst. We must always be willing if we want to be collaborators with God in this world where we live.

Prayer: Help us, Lord, to always be willing to hear your call and to follow you. Amen.

GENTE DISPUESTA

Si pensamos en el nacimiento de Jesús y en todos los eventos posteriores llegaremos a la conclusión de que todo pasó porque hubo gente que estuvo dispuesta.

María y José estuvieron dispuestos a acoger a Jesús desafiando las costumbres y los malos entendidos de su tiempo.

Los pastores estuvieron dispuestos a dejar su trabajo para celebrar la llegada del Salvador; los sabios se atrevieron a andar por los caminos desde lejos para ofrecer sus regalos y los ángeles estuvieron dispuestos a dar sus cantos para alegrar ese momento.

La primera Navidad fue posible porque hubo gente dispuesta, luego la vida de Jesús estuvo llena de personas que lo dejaron todo para caminar con Él, servir al pueblo y comenzar una nueva forma de vivir. Siempre hubo gente dispuesta… pero también hubo quien no se atrevió.

Siempre piensa que Dios no usa a las personas holgazanas, que hay que atreverse si queremos hacer presente el Reino en medio nuestro. Tenemos que estar siempre dispuestos si deseamos ser colaboradores de Dios en medio del mundo donde vivimos.

Oración: Ayúdanos Señor, a estar siempre dispuestos a oír tu llamado y a seguirte. Amén.

A FUTURE

JEREMIAH 29:4-14

When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart (NRSV)

Jeremiah 29:13

            The Gospel of Christ is power, a power that radically changes lives. The simple message of the gospel is that God not only saves us by means of our faith honoring Christ’s crucifixion, but that the Spirit of Christ will also come to live in us and give us the power to change.

            All men and women have the power to change, but Christians rely specifically on the Holy Spirit when they decide to walk in God’s paths. No matter how unpromising your life may seem, there is hope for you. The first step is to deliver your life to God, and the second step is to fearlessly accept the reality of your life.

            Of course, there is the possibility that a specific situation has no resolution: sickness, economic problems, family issues, but God will not leave you without hope. You have a future with God. That future requires your obedience, and then God will guide your steps toward a fruitful life. Your greatest achievement doesn’t depend on your circumstances, but on your own response to God.

Prayer: Lord, assure me of your promise of a future and a hope for my life. Help me to understand that I have a future with you and to trust in you and obey you as I wait patiently for the fulfillment of that hope. Amen.

El Evangelio de Cristo es poder, un poder que cambia vidas radicalmente. El simple mensaje del evangelio es que Dios no sólo nos salvará por medio de nuestra fe en la honra de Cristo en la cruz, sino que el Espíritu de Cristo también vendrá a vivir en nosotros y nos dará poder para cambiar.

Todos los hombres y todas las mujeres tienen el poder de cambiar, pero los cristianos cuentan con la ayuda específica del Espíritu Santo cuando deciden andar en los caminos de Dios. No importa cuán poco prometedora parezca tu vida, hay esperanza para ti.

El primer paso es entregarle tu vida a Dios, y el segundo paso es aceptar sin temor la realidad de tu vida.

Desde luego que existe la posibilidad real de que una situación específica no se resuelva: problemas de enfermedades, situaciones económicas, problemas en las familias. Pero Dios no te dejará sin esperanza. Tú tienes un futuro con Dios. Ese futuro requiere de tu obediencia, y luego Dios guiará tus pasos hacia una vida fructífera. Tu máxima realización no depende de tus circunstancias, sino de tu propia respuesta hacia Dios.

Oración: Señor, confírmame tu promesa de un futuro y una esperanza para mi vida. Ayúdame a entender que contigo tengo un futuro y a confiar en ti y obedecerte mientras espero pacientemente el cumplimiento de esa esperanza. Amén.

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

DANIEL 9:1-19

O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, listen and act and do not delay! For your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people bear your name! (NRSV)

Daniel 9:19

            In praying we are communicating with God. Prayer has many dimensions and intentions. The intention of worship, that is of praising God for who he is, allows us to lift our confessions to him. That means that we do not always do what is good, and we recognize our sins before God. There is also the dimension of gratitude when in thanksgiving we express our gratitude for God’s goodness. Further, we recognize the dimension of intercession.

            Intercession, which is the ministry of praying for others, corresponds to the category of supplication or entreaty. When we intercede for others, we ask God to provide for their needs. Too often our focus on supplication is to ask for ourselves. Intercession for others is a ministry, while asking for our own personal needs is a privilege.

            Daniel understood the power of intercessory prayer. In place of focusing on his personal prayers, he prayed to God for his people. Perhaps that is why he was so deeply loved. Daniel sensed that intercessory prayer was his ministry and at the same time his responsibility.

            Every Christian has the responsibility of praying for others. Without prayer, anything else that we attempt for God will be ineffective.

Prayer: Lord, my prayer rises to you today for you to bless those whom I have in my daily thoughts; for those people who need you the most now. Hear their pleas. Amen.

ORACIÓN DE INTERCESIÓN

DANIEL 9:1-19

Orar es comunicarnos con Dios. La oración tiene muchas dimensiones y propósitos. El propósito de adorarle, es decir, alabar a Dios por quién es Él; podemos elevar hacia él nuestra confesión. Esto significa reconocer que no siempre hacemos el bien y reconocemos nuestro pecado ante Dios. También está la dimensión de la gratitud, cuando en acción de gracias, expresamos gratitud por la bondad de Dios; y también reconocemos la dimensión intercesora. La intercesión, que es el ministerio de orar por otros, corresponde a la categoría de la súplica. Cuando intercedemos a favor de los otros, le pedimos a Dios que provea para sus necesidades. Demasiado a menudo, nuestro enfoque en la súplica es pedir por nosotros mismos. La intercesión por otros es un ministerio, mientras que la súplica por las necesidades personales es un privilegio.

Daniel comprendió el poder de la oración intercesora. En vez de centrarse en sus oraciones personales, rogaba a Dios por su pueblo. Por eso quizás era muy amado. Daniel sintió que la oración intercesora era su ministerio, y a la vez, su responsabilidad. Cada cristiano tiene la responsabilidad de orar por otros. Sin oración, cualquier otra cosa que afirmemos hacer para Dios será ineficaz.

Oración: Señor, mi oración se eleva hoy a ti para que bendigas a quienes tengo en mi pensamiento día a día, para aquellas personas que más te necesitan en este momento. Atiende sus súplicas. Amén.

INFINITE KINDNESS

HOSEA 2:2-23

And I will take you for my wife forever;

 I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice,

in steadfast love, and in mercy. (NRSV)

Hosea 2:19

            One of the most difficult things for most of us is to love those who don’t return our love. The Bible presents a beautiful image of disinterested and persistent love in the story of the Prophet Hosea, who shows faithfulness to his unfaithful wife, Gomer. Hosea would not let her go, just as God would not let unfaithful Israel go, even in the face of the repeated rejection of verse 5.

            God is not like us. His kindness does not end when we turn away from him. God longs for us to return to Him. Maybe you crave the love of someone who seems to reject your love. You may wonder how long you can deal with such pain.

            Take heart. Christ, who also experienced rejection, will give you the strength to persevere in your love and kindness, even in the midst of pain.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for loving me so much that you never stop pursuing me. Help me to show infinite kindness, even when it is not reciprocated, the same way you do with me. Amen.

BONDAD INFINITA

Una de las cosas más difíciles para la mayoría de nosotros es amar a aquellos que no corresponden a nuestro amor. La Biblia presenta una hermosa imagen de bondad desinteresada y persistente en la historia del profeta Oseas, que mostró fidelidad a su esposa infiel Gomer.

Oseas no la dejaría ir, al igual que Dios no permitiría ir al Israel infiel incluso ante el rechazo repetido del versículo 5.

Dios no es como nosotros. Su bondad no se acaba cuando nos alejamos de Él. Dios anhela que volvamos a Él.

Tal vez anhelas el amor de alguien que parece rechazar tu amor. Puede que te preguntes cuánto tiempo podrás soportar tanto dolor. Ten ánimo, Cristo, que también experimentó el rechazo, te dará la fortaleza para perseverar en tu amor y bondad incluso en medio del dolor.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por amarme tanto que nunca dejas de perseguirme. Ayúdame a mostrar bondad infinita, aunque no sea correspondida, al igual que tú haces conmigo. Amén.

I am a foreigner to my own family,

a stranger to my own mother’s children.

During one of the many hours I spent translating La siembra Infinita into English, I came upon the following phrase written by Rafael Cepeda: “There is no unity with Christ without passion for otherness in the name of Christ.”[1]   It’s curious how ideas come to us in waves sometimes. For example, some of my colleagues and I had been discussing this same word otherness in the context of a trip we were planning to Cuba to dialogue with a pastor there concerning the treatment of people with intellectual disabilities.  People everywhere afflicted by intellectual disability are often perceived as “strangers to their own family.”

A very special friend of mine here in the US has two brothers, both suffering from this disability. Her commitment to them is -  just like the families I’ve met in Cuba – complete and total. She spends hours with them, listening to their ideas and thoughts, and the result is that the brothers no longer feel like strangers in their own family, rather like fully accepted humans. With such love all otherness simply disappears, and a real human emerges. Perhaps that person is different from what we consider to be normal, but my friend doesn’t let “difference” stand in the way of her loving them just exactly as they are. She has passion, tolerance, and acceptance for otherness, and follows Christ’s command to love her neighbor – in whatever form they may be – as herself, and she is a wonderful model to inspire others as they struggle with similar situations.

Prayer:  Merciful God, you call us to love our neighbor as our self. Help us to see your image in the faces of those suffering intellectual disability. Amen

OTREDAD

SALMO 69:8

Me he convertido en extraño para mis hermanos,

y un extranjero para los hijos de mi madre.

Durante una de las muchas horas que pasaba traduciendo el libro La siembra infinita de español a inglés, tropecé con la frase siguiente, escrito por Rafael Cepeda: “No hay unidad con Cristo si no hay pasión de otredad en el nombre de Cristo”. Me es curioso cómo de vez en cuando las ideas nos llegan como si fueran olas del mar. Por ejemplo, estábamos discutiendo algunos de mis colegas y yo esta misma palabra otredad en el contexto de un viaje que planeábamos a Cuba para dialogar con un pastor allá sobre el tratamiento de gente con minusvalías intelectuales. Se percibe a la gente afligida de esta minusvalía como “extranjeros entre su propia familia” en todas partes del mundo.

Aquí en los Estados Unidos una amiga mía muy especial tiene dos hermanos, ambos sufren de esta minusvalía. Su compromiso hacia ellos es – al igual como las familias en Cuba – completo y total. Pasa muchas horas con ellos, escuchándoles sus ideas y sus pensamientos. El resultado es que sus hermanos dejaron de sentirse como extranjeros entre miembros de su propia familia, y en vez se sintieron como humanos plenamente aceptados.

Quizás una tal persona sea diferente de lo que la mayoría de nosotros consideramos normal, pero mi amiga no permite que esa diferencia construya una barrera a su amor. Ella los ama por ser exactamente como lo son. Ella tiene pasión, tolerancia, y aceptación por la otredad y obedece al mandamiento de Cristo: Ama a tu prójimo – en cualquiera forma que le aparezca – tal como lo encuentres.  Mi amiga es un modelo maravilloso para inspirar a otra gente que luchan con situaciones semejantes.

Oración:  Dios misericordioso, Tú nos llamas a amar a nuestro prójimo como nosotros mismos. Ayúdanos a ver tu cara en los rostros de ellos y de ellas que padecen de minusvalías intelectuales. Amén.

ANGRY WITH GOD

HABAKKUK 1:2-3

O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? (NRSV)

Habakkuk 1:2

            Habakkuk not only complains; he becomes angry with God. If this seems risky, it shouldn’t be. God listens when his children complain to Him. The issue is not anger, but how it is handled. Remember that your anger is not a decision but rather a response to a situation that gave you great pain and that you think God could have ameliorated. Thus, in your mind God has treated you unjustly.

            Anger is a totally normal human response to the perception of an injustice. God made us with the ability to get angry. Nevertheless, how we manage our anger is our responsibility. The best way to handle anger toward God, or toward anything is to surrender it to Him.  He knows what you are feeling and wants you to express what it is that you think and feel.

            Keep up an intense communication with God in the midst of your anger. Without a doubt he will give you an answer and make you understand.

Prayer: Lord, help me to overcome my anger and my reactions of wrath. Amen.

ENOJADO CON DIOS

HABACUB 1:2-3

¿Hasta cuándo, oh Jehová, clamaré y no me oirás…?

Habacuc 1:2

Habacuc no sólo se queja, sino que se enoja con Dios. Si esto parece arriesgado, no debería serlo. Dios entiende cuando sus hijos e hijas se enojan con Él. El asunto no es el enojo en sí, sino cómo manejas el enojo.

Recuerda que tu enojo no es una decisión, sino una respuesta a una situación que te trajo gran dolor y que crees que Dios podría haber evitado. De modo que, en tu mente, Dios te ha tratado injustamente.

El enojo es una respuesta humana totalmente normal ante la percepción de una injusticia. Dios nos hizo con la capacidad de enojarnos. Sin embrago, cómo manejamos nuestro enojo es nuestra responsabilidad.

La mejor manera de manejar el enojo hacia Dios o hacia cualquier cosa es entregárselo a Él. Tu enojo es una evidencia de que estás interesado en la justicia. Puedes expresarle libremente tu percepción de las cosas a Dios. No le vas a ofender. Tu enojo no lo tomará por sorpresa. Él sabe lo que estás experimentando y quiere que le expreses lo que piensas y sientes.

Mantén una comunicación intensa con Dios en medio de tu enojo. Sin dudas, él te dará respuesta y te hará comprender.

Oración: Ayúdame Señor, a superar mi enojo y mis reacciones de ira. Amén.

THE LANGUAGE OF GOD’S LOVE

1 JOHN 4:11

Malachi 1:2

            How do you know that God loves you? Ask several people that question, and you might get a lot of different answers. In human relations we feel loved when the other person shows us that affection through the language of love. The language of love doesn’t refer only to romantic words that we can express, but to gestures of respect, consideration, and commitment toward the one who is loved. The same principle applies in our relationship with God.

            God blesses us every day with his language of love. God listens to us, considers us in his plans and fills us with gifts: family and friends. God consoles us in the midst of pain and strengthens us. God smiles with our victories and helps us to attain them. There is no doubt that God loves us.

            This truth has tremendous implications not only for our personal well-being, but also for our efforts to evangelize others. The fact is that we are representatives of God. He uses us to show his love. If we want to be successful in our efforts to evangelize, we need to follow the example of God who speaks and acts in a way that is meaningful to each individual. We have to admit that it requires a bit of effort on our part. Nonetheless, the benefits far outweigh the effort. Learning to speak the language of God’s love makes us better vehicles of that love.

Prayer: Today we pray to you for those who live with HIV and their families, that we may show our accompaniment with them through your language of love.  Amen.

EL LENGUAJE DEL AMOR DE DIOS

1 JUAN 4:11

¿Cómo sabes que Dios te ama? Haz esa pregunta a varias personas y podrías recibir muchas respuestas. En las relaciones humanas nos sentimos amados cuando la otra persona nos muestra ese afecto a través del lenguaje del amor. El lenguaje del amor no se refiere sólo a las palabras románticas que somos capaces de expresar, sino a los gestos de respeto, consideración, y compromiso hacia el ser amado. El mismo principio tiene aplicación en nuestra relación con Dios.

Dios nos bendice cada día con su lenguaje de amor. Dios nos escucha, cuenta con nosotros en sus planes, nos colma de regalos: la familia, los amigos. Dios nos consuela en medio del dolor y nos da fortaleza. Sonríe con nuestras victorias y nos ayuda a lograrlas. Sin dudas, Dios nos ama. Esta verdad tiene inmensas implicaciones no solo para nuestro bienestar personal, sino también para nuestros esfuerzos por evangelizar a otros. El hecho es que somos representantes de Dios. Él nos usa para expresar su amor. Si queremos tener éxito en nuestros esfuerzos de evangelización, necesitamos seguir el ejemplo de Dios que habla y actúa de una manera significativa para cada individuo. Hay que admitir que se requiere de un poco de esfuerzo de nuestra parte. Sin embargo, los beneficios superan ampliamente el esfuerzo. Aprender a hablar el lenguaje de amor de Dios nos hace mejores vehículos de ese amor.

Oración: Hoy te pedimos por las personas que viven con VIH y sus familiares que podamos expresarles nuestro acompañamiento a través de tu lenguaje de amor. Amén.
