LET’S SOLVE THE PROBLEM
JOHN 16:25-33

In this world you will have trouble.
But take heart! I have overcome the world.
 John 16:33b (NIV)

There is a story that one day the superior of a monastery died and they needed to replace him. Then the grand master called a meeting of all the monks and told them that the new superior would be the one who could solve the problem that he was going to pose to them. In the center of the room the grand master put a table with a vase and a very beautiful flower, saying: “this is the problem.” Everyone was watching, but only one monk took his spade and broke the vase. Then the grand master said: “you are the new superior.”

Similarly, many people encumber their whole life with things that were once important but now only take up useless space in their hearts and minds. Space that is essential for renewing their life. It doesn’t matter if it is a good relationship, some habit that comforts us, or some material possession that we cannot part with. If it becomes a problem, it must be eliminated. The past is a lesson, an experience to be recalled, not relived. Let us use the experiences of the past now to build our future. The Lord invites us to a new life, free from burdens however important they have been for us.

Prayer: Lord, we beseech you for strength to break with those things that fill our minds. Teach us to solve our problems regardless of the sacrifice it means for us. Amen.

 RESOLVAMOS EL PROBLEMA
JUAN 16:25-33

En el mundo tendrán aflicción;
pero confíen, yo he vencido al mundo
 Juan 16:33b

Thursday, September 27 Anniversary of the “Dora Valentín” Church (Varadero) LET’S BE PATIENT LUKE 6:37-38

Thursday, September 27
Anniversary of the “Dora Valentín” Church (Varadero)

LET’S BE PATIENT
LUKE 6:37-38
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens.
Ecclesiastes 3: 1 (NIV)
I don’t remember the exact date when I came to church for the first time. I only remember that it was around the year 2000. My wife, my children, and I arrived there looking for peace, which we desperately needed. After about two years my old habits returned and caused me to abandon the way I had begun to follow. So I ended up forgetting the sound advice of my brothers and sisters and ignoring the appeals and censure of my wife and children. Without realizing it I put an end to the happiness I had given them during that period. After many years and many tears I realized that my only option was to return to where the Lord had called me some time ago. But this time it was different. I decided to go back to my church, and from that day my life changed.

Today I’m a different man, who only seeks to do better every day serving the rest and giving to others what was given to me one day. Therefore, when I see someone in rebellion, abandoning the right way, I smile and say to myself: “Be patient because you were like that and God and your brothers were patient with you.” We should not judge anybody for their actions. Only God knows the hearts of people and knows the moment when his word will bear fruit. Let us be patient with others, as God was patient with us.

Prayer: Lord, teach me how I can love the good in everybody. Amen.

Aniversario de la Iglesia  “Dora Valentín” (Varadero)

TENGAMOS PACIENCIA
LUCAS 6:37-38

Wednesday, September 26 DAILY BLESSINGS PSALM 121

DAILY BLESSINGS
PSALM 121

My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
                                                                                    Psalm 121:2 (NIV)

How great it would be if we all saw the light instead of the shadows!
This helps me think about how wonderful life is. Sometimes we forget the blessings we receive, and always think about the problems we face every day.
We tend to remember illnesses, financial problems, and other concerns. Many people spend the whole day talking about their problems and they devote little time to recalling with thanks the blessings God has given them.
God is merciful and showers his blessings on us. Let us look around us to see the blessed action of God in the beauty of a flower, in a fruit-laden tree, in a child’s smile, and the rain that makes things grow.
Why do we insist on looking at the shadows? Let’s be positive, optimistic, and above all let us be grateful to our great merciful God.
Look for the blessings, recognize them, and enjoy every one of them.

Prayer: Teach us, Lord, to see your blessings every day. Amen

BENDICIONES DE CADA DÍA
SALMO 121

Somos dados a recordar enfermedades, problemas económicos y otras preocupaciones.

BE STRONG AND VERY COURAGEOUS
JOSHUA 1:1-9

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life…
Be strong and very courageous…
                  Joshua 1:5-7 (NIV)

When we began to rebuild the sanctuary of our Presbyterian Church in Encrucijada, many people asked why there was so much investment and effort in a place where there was only a small group of 10 or 12 persons.

It’s true that the investment and effort were going to be large, but so too was our commitment in the congregation to do the Lord’s work. That “small group” had to be big enough to rebuild this church, because in the 89 years since its founding, its doors had never closed, fulfilling God’s promise: “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So the only thing the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Encrucijada had to do was follow God’s command, be strong and very courageous.

It is time for everybody to recognize in truth that what God has given us as an inheritance, we conquer for him by our effort, sacrifice, and courage; that the book of his law will never be removed from our mouth, because only in that manner will our route be prosperous and everything will turn out right; but for that to happen, “we must be strong and very courageous.”

Prayer: Thank you, beloved God, for the Church in Encrucijada and its evangelistic work over all these years. Amen.

ESFUÉRZATE Y SÉ VALIENTE
JOSUE 1:1-9

STRENGTH IN WEAKNESS
2 CORINTHIANS 12: 7-10

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power
is made perfect in weakness.
   2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

Our world rewards strength: the physical strength of athletes, the financial strength of corporations, the political force of elected officials, and the military strength of the army.
Paul offers a new concept of strength, because weakness can make a person strong.
We certainly would have no problem if God used our natural strengths: speaking, organizing, managing, or selling; but instead of this, God chooses to use us in the ways we are weakest.
Weakness has a way of making us trust in God beyond our own strength.
The thorn in the flesh suffered by the Apostle Paul was a painful and humiliating experience given him so he would not become proud.

Prayer: Lord, help us to grow in those areas where we are weak. Strengthen our spirit and help us to eschew all pride. Amen.

 FORTALEZA EN LA DEBILIDAD
2 CORINTIOS 12:7-10

Sunday, September 23 International Bible Sunday BIBLES FOR CUBA JOSHUA 1:7-9

Sunday, September 23
International Bible Sunday
BIBLES FOR CUBA
JOSHUA 1:7-9
Your word is a lamp before my feet and a light for my journey.
Psalm 119:105 CEB
A few months ago we had the opportunity to participate in a wonderful program of Bible distribution, sponsored by the Biblical Commission of the Council of Churches of Cuba, and overseen by the Church of the Rock, in Florida.  At the initial worship service, the invited preacher shared a story that impressed us all.  Apparently many of the Bibles that we received on this occasion were thanks to the strength, ingenuity and sensitivity of a man over ninety years old.  He had gathered the coins that he won at a bingo game in the nursing home where he lived until he collected the considerable amount to contribute more than one hundred of the Bibles for Cuba.  This story moved everyone.  At times we think that older people or people with limited resources don’t have many possibilities for serving God and God’s people.  Nevertheless, this man showed that at his age he was able to be an instrument of God so that his Word could cross borders and touch many people in need of hope. Today is a day to give thanks to God for the life of this man, who, like many other anonymous people, has dedicated his life to serving and sharing the Word, regardless of his limitations.

Prayer: Our God, you have words of life eternal for us. Allow us to share your good news regardless of our limitations. We give you thanks especially for the United Bible Societies and the Cuban Biblical Commission, and for all the people who have served in translating and distributing your Word.  Amen.

Domingo Internacional de la Biblia
BIBLIAS PARA CUBA
JOSUÉ 1:7-9´
Lámpara es a mis pies tu palabra y lumbrera a mi camino
Salmo 119:105

Saturday, September 22 REACHING ETERNAL LIFE MARK 10:17-31

REACHING ETERNAL LIFE
MARK 10:17-31
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21 CEB
This passage, although well known, can seem foreign to you.  Maybe you think:  I’m not rich, this doesn’t fit.  At times we get close to Jesus, but we are not able to take on the commitment and the responsibility of following him, because we are attached to many things.  Everything has its cost.

In the midst of these times in which the value of what we possess has more potential than human values and where people are measured by what they have and not by who they are, we are challenged by Jesus.  To sell what we have is not to take away all of our goods, it is to get rid of all that distances us from reality and feeds our ego, creating barriers that separate us from God.  It is better to look at our scale of values, rethinking our priorities, that is where we sometimes don’t look first.

There are no formulas for reaching eternal life, instead there are roads that are not impossible, but which demand trust in the one who makes possible the impossible:  God.

Prayer: Our God, we want so much, and we need so little!  Guide us and forgive us.  Renew our hearts always, in the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

ALCANZAR LA VIDA ETERNA
MARCOS 10:17-31

Porque donde esté vuestro tesoro,
allí estará también vuestro corazón
Mateo 6:21

Oración: Dios nuestro, ¡queremos tanto y necesitamos tan poco!
