TEN COMMANDMENTS OF A CHILD

MATTHEW 18:10-14

Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you,

 in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.

Matthew 18:10

Sometimes we treat our children as if they were adults, and we fail to have the patience to teach, train and protect them. Moreover, we often overprotect them, denying them space to be independent. Today is a day to reflect on the manner in which we guide the steps of our sons and daughters. Let’s pay attention to the voices of the littlest ones who tell us:

1 - My hands are small, so please don’t expect perfection when I make my bed, draw a picture or throw a ball. My feet are small so please walk more slowly so that I can go with you.

2 - My eyes haven’t seen as much of the world as you have, so please, let me explore and don’t place unnecessary boundaries on me.

3 – Your work will always be there, but I will be small only for a short while, so please take the time to help me understand the wonderful things of this world, and do it with joy.

4 - My feelings are fragile, so please pay attention to my needs. Don’t challenge me all the time (you wouldn’t like to be challenged for being so harsh.) Treat me as you would like to be treated.

5 - I am a special gift of God; please treasure me as God intended you to do, respecting my actions, giving me principles and values with which to live and teaching me lovingly.

6 - To grow, I need your support and your enthusiasm, not your criticism. Please don’t be so strict; you can criticize the things I do without criticizing me.

7- Please, give me the freedom to make my own decisions. Allow me to be wrong so that I can learn from my mistakes; then in the future I will be prepared to make the decisions that life requires of me.

8 - Please don’t do everything for me. Somehow, it makes me feel as if my efforts don’t meet your expectations. I know it’s difficult, but stop comparing me with my brother or my sister.

9 - Don’t be afraid to get away from me for a while. Children need time away from their parents as much as parents need time away from their children.

10- Take me to church or give me examples of spiritual life.  I enjoy learning.

Prayer: We pray, Lord, for our sons and daughters. We also pray for those children who suffer, for those who have no family, nor love, nor food, nor health. Take care of them, for they are our most precious treasures. Amen.

DIEZ MANDAMIENTOS  DE UN NIÑO

MATEO 18:10-14

Mirad  que no menospreciéis a uno de estos pequeños, porque os digo que sus ángeles en los cielos ven siempre el rostro de mi padre que está en los cielos

En ocasiones tratamos a nuestros niños como si fueran personas adultas y nos falta la paciencia para educar, enseñar, guiar. En muchas ocasiones también los sobreprotegemos negándoles espacios de independencia. Hoy es un día para reflexionar en la manera en que conducimos los pasos de nuestros hijos e hijas. Pongamos atención a las voces de los más pequeños que nos dicen:

1- Mis manos son pequeñas, por favor no esperes perfección cuando  tiendo la cama, hago un dibujo o lanzo la pelota. Mis piernas son pequeñas, por favor camina más lento para que pueda ir junto a ti.

2- Mis ojos no han visto el mundo como tú lo has visto, por favor, déjame explorarlo, no me limites innecesariamente.

3- El trabajo siempre estará allí. Yo seré pequeño sólo por un corto tiempo, por favor, tómate un tiempo para explicarme las cosas maravillosas de este mundo y hazlo con alegría.

4- Mis sentimientos son frágiles, por favor está pendiente de mis necesidades. No me retes todo el día (a ti no te gustaría ser retado por ser tan duro). Trátame como te gustaría a ti ser tratado.

5- Soy un regalo especial de Dios, por favor atesórame como Dios quiso que lo hicieras, respetando mis acciones, dándome principios y valores con los cuales vivir y enseñándome amorosamente.

6- Necesito tu apoyo y tu entusiasmo, no tus críticas, para crecer.   Por favor, no seas tan estricto, recuerda, puedes criticar las cosas   que hago  sin criticarme a mí.

7- Por favor, dame libertad para tomar decisiones propias. Permite que me equivoque, para que pueda aprender de mis errores. Así algún día  estaré preparado para tomar las decisiones que la vida requiere de mí.

8- Por favor, no hagas todo por mí. De alguna forma eso me hace sentir que mis esfuerzos no cumplieron con tus expectativas. Yo sé que es difícil, pero deja de compararme con mi hermano o hermana.

9- No temas alejarte de mí por un tiempito. Los niños necesitamos vacaciones de los padres, así como los padres necesitan vacaciones de sus hijos.

10- Llévame a la iglesia o dame ejemplos de vida espiritual.  Yo disfruto aprendiendo.

Oración: Te pedimos Señor, por nuestros niños y niñas. Por los que sufren, por los que no tienen familias, ni amor, ni alimentos, ni salud. Cuida de ellos, que son nuestros tesoros más preciados. Amén.

ARE YOU WORKING WITH LOVE

AS IF YOU ARE DOING IT FOR THE LORD?

COLOSSIANS 3:23-24

Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters,

since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward;

you serve the Lord Christ.

Colossians 3:23-24

Our attitude toward work is not a matter of indifference to the Lord. Faithfulness, great care and dedication in how we perform our work can be a witness to those around us. Work is, in accordance with God’s will, for the good of human life; on the other hand, the Bible condemns laziness and idleness.

For the believer, all work should carry the title: “For the Lord.” When we carry out our daily tasks primarily for the Lord, wherever we may be, how greatly ennobled is our work! What’s more, every day we can ask for God’s blessing that all we do may have a good outcome.

The New Testament teaches us that the gains from our work should not be only for us and for our family, but also to help those less fortunate and to financially support the servants of the Lord and their area of work.

In the Epistle to the Ephesians it says: “Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy.” (4:28)

In the letter to the Galatians, the apostle exhorts: “Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher.” (6:6)

Finally, he warns the believers of Thessalonica to work calmly. (2 Thessalonians 3:13)

Prayer: Lord, teach us to value our work, to love it from the bottom of our heart and to do it with all the love we are capable of giving. Amen.

¿TRABAJAS CON AMOR,

COMO SI LO HICIERAS PARA EL SEÑOR?

COLOSENSES 3:23-24

Todo lo que hagáis hacedlo de corazón, como para el Señor

y no para los hombres; sabiendo que del Señor recibiréis

la recompensa de la herencia, porque a Cristo el Señor servís

Colosenses 3:23-24

Nuestra actitud para con el trabajo no es indiferente al Señor. La fidelidad, el esmero y la aplicación con que trabajamos pueden ser un testimonio para los que nos rodean. El trabajo es, según la voluntad de Dios, para el bien del ser humano; en cambio la Biblia condena la pereza y la holgazanería.

Para el creyente, cada trabajo debería llevar el título: “Para el Señor”. Cuando hacemos nuestras tareas diarias para el Señor en primer lugar, estemos donde estemos, ¡cuánto ennoblece esto nuestra actividad! Además, cada día podemos pedir la bendición divina para que todo tenga un buen resultado.

El Nuevo Testamento nos enseña que la ganancia relacionada con nuestro trabajo no debe ser solo para nosotros y nuestra familia, sino para ayudar a otros menos favorecidos y sustentar materialmente a los siervos del Señor y su campo de actividad.

En la epístola a los Efesios se nos dice: El que hurtaba, no hurte más, sino trabaje, haciendo con sus manos lo que es bueno, para que tenga qué compartir con el que padece necesidad”. (4:28) En la carta a los Gálatas el apóstol exhorta: “El que es enseñado en la Palabra, haga partícipe de toda cosa buena al que lo instruye” (6:6).  Finalmente advierte a los creyentes de  Tesalónica a trabajar sosegadamente (2 Tesal. 3: 11-13)          

Oración: Señor, enséñanos a valorar nuestro trabajo, a amarlo y a hacerlo de corazón y con todo el amor que seamos capaces de dar. Amén.

AM I A TRUE CHRISTIAN?

PHILIPPIANS 1:12-27

Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel,

Philippians 1:27

Attending concerts or listening to someone play the violin has never made anyone a violinist. Watching a football championship has never turned the spectator into a true football player, just as reading the menu in a restaurant has never satisfied anyone’s hunger. In the same way, attending religious services doesn’t make a person a Christian. Contrary to what many think, a Christian is not simply someone who belongs to a Christian denomination. To be listed on the membership rolls of a congregation can feed the illusion of being Christian, without that person having a true relationship with God. One can even carry out important religious activities without having God’s life within oneself.  Being a Christian requires a true faith and a work of the heart and the conscience; it’s a decision that has to do with the deepest part of one’s character.

The Bible recognizes as Christians all those who accept God’s commandments and who place their trust in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to save us. “To belong to Christ” implies a profound experience with the Lord, an authentic witness to the presence of God in our lives. Let us ask ourselves the question: Am I a true Christian?

Prayer: Teach me to be a true Christian, from my heart.  Help me to grow in my Christian life. Amen.

¿SOY UN VERDADERO CRISTIANO?

FILIPENSES 1:12-27

Solamente os ruego que os comportéis como es digno

del evangelio de Cristo, para que sea que vaya a veros o que esté ausente, oiga de vosotros que estáis firmes en un mismo espíritu, combatiendo unánimes por la fe del evangelio

Filipenses 1:27

Asistir a conciertos o escuchar tocar el violín nunca ha hecho que alguien se vuelva violinista. Ver un campeonato de fútbol tampoco ha hecho de un espectador un verdadero futbolista, e igualmente leer el menú de un restaurante jamás ha saciado el hambre a nadie. Del mismo modo, acudir a servicios religiosos no hace que una persona sea cristiana. Contrariamente a lo que muchos piensan, un cristiano no es simplemente alguien que pertenece a una denominación cristiana. Estar inscrito en el registro de una congregación puede alimentar la ilusión de ser cristiano, sin que esa persona tenga una verdadera relación con Dios. Incluso se puede desempeñar actividades religiosas importantes sin tener la vida de Dios.  Para ser cristiano se requiere una fe auténtica y una obra en el corazón y en la conciencia; es una decisión que tiene que ver  con lo más profundo  de la personalidad.

La Biblia reconoce como cristianos a todos aquellos que aceptan  los mandamientos de Dios y que depositan su confianza en Jesucristo, quien murió en la cruz para salvarnos. “Ser de Cristo” implica una experiencia profunda con el Señor, un testimonio auténtico de la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas. Hagámonos la pregunta: ¿Soy un auténtico cristiano?      

Oración: Enséñame a ser un cristiano verdadero, de corazón. Ayúdame a desarrollarme en mi vida  cristiana. Amén.

RELATIONSHIPS IN THE CHURCH

1 CORINTHIANS 12: 12-20

As it is, there are many members, yet one body.

1Corinthians 12:20

 

The church is a body. As such it has different members and different functions. For this organism to live, to grow, to serve, and to reproduce, requires harmony, independence and affectionate dealings among its different members.

The creation, development, and maintenance of this environment is one of the most important works of the Holy Spirit, of pastors, of leaders, and of the whole community. The principal that every pastor is a creator of relationships is very true, but it is also true that all of us are pastors in some manner. Let us remember that as Reformed Christians, we believe in the priesthood of all believers.

The work of the Church is pastoral and cannot be developed only by one person or by one small group. Each person has their own function and responsibility: some teach, others administer, others organize the liturgical life of the work of deacons, and others evangelize. Without doubt, each is important in this body which is the Church

Prayer: Lord, bless our beloved Presbyterian Church in Cuba. Bless its pastors, its leaders, its laity, its elders, and its faithful. Strengthen our congregations.  We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

LAS RELACIONES EN LA IGLESIA

1 CORINTIOS 12: 12-20

Pero ahora son muchos los miembros,

aunque el cuerpo es uno solo.

1Corintios 12:20

La iglesia es un cuerpo. Como tal tiene miembros  diferentes y disímiles funciones.

Para que este organismo viva, crezca, sirva y se reproduzca, necesita de armonía, interdependencia y trato amoroso entre sus diferentes miembros.

La creación, desarrollo y mantenimiento de este ambiente es una de las importantísimas funciones del Espíritu Santo, de los pastores y pastoras, de los líderes y de toda la comunidad. Es muy válido el principio de que todo pastor es un creador de relaciones, pero es que todos somos pastores y pastoras de alguna manera. Recordemos que como reformados creemos en el sacerdocio universal de todos los creyentes. La labor de la Iglesia es pastoral y no puede ser desarrollada por una persona o un reducido grupo.

Cada persona tiene su función y su responsabilidad: algunos enseñar, otros administrar, otros organizar la vida litúrgica o la labor diaconal, otros evangelizar. Sin dudas todos somos importantes en ese cuerpo que es la Iglesia.

Oración: Señor, bendice nuestra amada Iglesia Presbiteriana en Cuba. Bendice sus pastores, sus líderes, sus laicos, sus presbíteros, sus feligreses. Fortalece nuestras congregaciones. Te lo pedimos en el nombre de Jesús. Amén.

THE POWER OF FAITH

HEBREWS 11:1-16

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

Human life is always filled with difficulties. Sometimes what we plan on comes out backwards from what we intend.

We can’t live without faith because to deal with all the things that life presents us we need courage, and it is faith that sustains courage. Faith is a great force that transforms difficulties into triumphs, evils into rich blessings, setbacks into victories, and brings out the good where it is perhaps missing.

Whenever I hear the expression, “I believe neither in anything nor in anybody,” I always ask myself, “How can anyone live like that?”

When the work of many years is destroyed in an instant, when friends are treacherous, let us remember that all things pass. Where there is faith, there is hope that, as the hymn says, in the darkest night there is always light. Faith is the sun which rises splendid in the sky of our life after the storm of miseries and mishaps.

Prayer: Lord, fill us with faith, shower us with faith, and cover us with faith–a true faith that doesn’t yield in spite of daily setbacks.  Amen.

EL PODER DE LA FE

HEBREOS 11:1-16

Es, pues, la fe la certeza de lo que se espera,

la convicción de lo que no se ve

Hebreos 11:1

La vida humana siempre está llena de dificultades.

A veces lo que planeamos hacer, sale al revés de nuestros deseos.

El ser humano no puede vivir sin fe, porque para enfrentar  todas las cosas  de la vida se necesita el valor, y la fe es el sostén del valor.

La fe es una gran fuerza que transforma las dificultades en triunfos, los males en ricas bendiciones, los reveces en victorias y saca lo bueno de donde quizás no lo haya.

Ante la expresión: “Yo no creo en nada, ni en nadie”, siempre me pregunto ¿Cómo puede alguien vivir así?

Cuando la labor de muchos años es destruida en un momento, cuando los amigos traicionan, recordemos que todo pasa. Cuando hay fe, hay esperanza de que, como dice el himno, en la más oscura noche siempre hay luz.

La fe es el sol que surge esplendoroso en el cielo de nuestra vida después del temporal de miserias y contratiempos.

Oración: Señor, llénanos de fe, cólmanos de fe, cúbrenos de fe. Pero de una fe verdadera, de la que no se doblega a pesar de los contratiempos diarios. Amén.

Train children in the right way, and when they are old, they will not stray from it…

Let me share a story for your reflection:

I couldn’t be present when my son was born; I had a trip to go on and many obligations. My son learned to eat when I wasn’t there; he learned to speak when I wasn’t there. Whenever I came home from a trip, I would say, “How fast my boy is growing!” And time marched on.

My son was always saying to me “Daddy, I want to be like you. Can we play now?”

“Son, I can’t; I have a meeting.”

When my son turned ten, I gave him a nice gift, and he said to me, “Thanks, Daddy. Can we break in the new bat and ball and play?” “I can’t now, son; I have to go on a trip. Maybe when I get back we will play.”  He smiled and said, “It’s OK, Daddy. When I grow up, I want to be like you.”

My son graduated from the university and moved out of the house. I told him, “Son, I’m very proud. Let’s sit down and talk.”  Do you know what he said to me? “I can’t today, Dad. I have to go out with my friends.”

I’m retired now, and I have free time to spend with him. He’s married now, has two kids and doesn’t live with me. I miss him. Today I called him: “Hi, son, I want to see you.” “Dad, I’d love to, but I can’t. I don’t have the time: work, the house, the kids. But thanks for calling.”

Now I realize that my son is like me.

Prayer: Lord, teach us the best way to raise our children. Help us to always have time for them despite our many daily concerns. Amen.

PAPÁ, QUIERO SER COMO TÚ

PROVERBIOS 22: 1-6

Instruye al niño en su camino y ni aun de viejo se apartará de él.

Comparto con ustedes una historia para reflexionar:

Cuando mi hijo nació yo no pude estar presente. Tenía un viaje  y muchos compromisos. Mi hijo aprendió a comer cuando yo no estaba, aprendió a hablar cuando yo no estaba. Siempre que volvía del trabajo yo decía: ¡Qué rápido crece  mi hijo! Y el tiempo fue pasando. Mi hijo crecía y siempre me decía: “Papá,  quiero ser como tú. ¿Podemos jugar ahora? “Ahora no puedo hijo, tengo que ir a una reunión”.  Mi hijo cumplió diez años, le hice un buen regalo y él me dijo: “Gracias papá. ¿Podemos estrenar el bate y la pelota jugando?” “ahora no puedo hijo, voy de viaje, pero cuando regrese jugaremos”. Se fue sonriendo y me dijo: “Está bien papá. Cuando sea grande quiero ser como tú”. Mi hijo se graduó de la universidad, y llegó a la casa. Yo le dije: Hijo, estoy muy orgulloso. Vamos a sentarnos  a conversar. ¿Saben qué me contestó? “Hoy no papá, tengo que salir con mis amistades”. Ya me jubilé, tengo tiempo libre para dedicarlo a él. Ya se casó, tiene dos niños, no vive conmigo. Lo extraño. Hoy lo llamé: “Hola hijo, quiero verte” Él me dijo: “Papá, yo quisiera pero no puedo, no tengo tiempo. El trabajo, la casa, los niños. Pero gracias por llamar”. Ahora me doy cuenta de que mi hijo es como yo.

Oración: Señor, instrúyenos en la mejor manera de educar a nuestros hijos. Ayúdanos a tener siempre tiempo para ellos, a pesar de nuestras ocupaciones diarias, que a veces son muchas. Amén.

CHANGE YOUR PRAYER

JAMES 1:2-7

 The testing of your faith produces endurance

James 1:3

Every day we face new challenges, and at times we are distracted by problems. Instead of finding joy in our prayers, our minds alternate between rethinking the past and creating fantasies of a future in which we imagine everything will be fine. But often our thoughts are overwhelming and don’t let us feel the peace of mind we need so much.

A piece of advice that would help us in those moments would be to change our prayer. In place of asking God “Why?” ask “To what end?” Ask how we can learn from this situation.

Throughout our lives, our problems change, and although we always have things to worry about, our perspective has to change likewise. Always pray with the absolute confidence that God is at your side to help you. Don’t be impatient.  Take advantage of the opportunities life gives you, even though they may be difficult to face, such as sickness, the death of loved ones, problems with family relations, etc. Don’t tell God you have a big problem; tell the problem you have a great God in whom you trust, and that your faith will make you victorious in whatever situation you encounter, no matter how difficult it is. Remember always that in all things God works for the good.

Prayer: Lord, strengthen my faith in those times of my life which are the most difficult, when all appears lost.  Amen.

CAMBIA TU ORACIÓN

SANTIAGO 1:2-7

La prueba de la fe produce paciencia

Santiago 1:3

Cada día enfrentamos nuevos desafíos y a veces los problemas nos distraen. En lugar de encontrar regocijo en la oración, nuestras mentes  fluctúan en repensar el pasado y crear fantasías futuras cuando imaginamos que todas las cosas estarán bien.

Pero en muchas ocasiones nuestros pensamientos nos abruman y no nos dejan sentir la paz interior que tanto necesitamos.

Un consejo que nos ayudaría en esos momentos sería: cambiar nuestra oración. En lugar de preguntarle  a Dios: ¿Por qué? Preguntarle: ¿Para qué? preguntarle qué podemos aprender de esa situación.

A  lo largo de nuestras vidas los problemas se van tornando diferentes y aunque siempre tengamos preocupaciones, nuestras perspectivas deben  ir cambiando. Ore siempre con la confianza absoluta de que Dios está a su lado para ayudarle. No se impaciente. Aproveche las oportunidades que le da la vida aunque  sean difíciles  de enfrentar como son las enfermedades, la muerte de seres queridos, problemas en las relaciones familiares, etc. No le diga a Dios que tiene un gran problema, dígale al problema que tiene un gran Dios en el cual confiar y que su fe lo hará salir victorioso de cualquier situación por difícil que sea. Recuerde siempre que en todas las cosas, Dios obra para bien.

Oración: Señor, fortalece mi fe en los momentos más difíciles de mi vida, cuando todo parezca perdido. Amén.
