1 SAMUEL 12:20- 22

Do not turn away in search of useless idols.
They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you
 because they are useless.
1 Samuel 12:21

There was once a man who had great riches and very precious paintings. He counted on many friends who were always at his side. He also had the joy of having a son, but the son died at the age of six.

This sorrowful and suffering man raised his glance to the sky and thought about all his wealth, and how little it served to alleviate his pain. It occurred to him then to seek out a famous painter whom he asked to paint the image of his son, showing him his photo. He was happy to have among his paintings one of his son also; but he died engulfed in great loneliness.

All who knew him went to an auction that was held to sell his paintings, beginning with that of the boy. When it was sold the auctioneer said, “The auction is finished!” Everyone was dumbfounded and asked, “How can it be over?” Someone spoke up and told them about the last will and testament left by the man: Whosoever bought the boy’s painting would be granted the rest of the works as a reward.

It’s the same with us in our daily lives. We should know how to value the most important beyond the material things: the love of our children, the warmth of the family, and the company of friends. God invites us not to lose ourselves in vanities that do not construct, rather to find ourselves with Him through the presence or the memory of our loved ones.

Prayer:  The prayer is missing from this devotional.

NO OS APARTÉIS EN POS DE VANIDADES
1 SAMUEL 12:20- 22

Tuesday, September 20 TOUCHING THE LIVES OF OTHERS MARK 1:40-45

TOUCHING THE LIVES OF OTHERS
MARK 1:40-45

Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man, “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”

Mark 1:41

We human beings are naturally predisposed to living collectively.  This forms an essential part of us. However, many times we adopt postures of exclusivity which harm others, which isolate them.  We justify these attitudes with the supposed disadvantages and differences of others.

Jesus knew that there is no reason for anyone to suffer loneliness and exclusion.  This is why he allows himself to be sought out and he intercedes for those suffering from isolation.  Jesus restores the lives of those he touches; he brings them back into their community, into a life of fullness.

This integration can be as demanding a process for the excluded person as for the one who excludes.  It requires action, changes in thoughts, humility, communication and participation.

The simple act of extending a hand can perform the miracle that allows us to live together in harmony.

Today we receive a calling: let us extend our hands to another person, giving him the chance to be restored; let us be a healing community; let us touch the lives of those who suffer from exclusion.

Prayer: Lord, use us in order to bring healing in life through our inclusion. Amen.

TOCAR LA VIDA DE OTROS
MARCOS 1: 40-45

Monday, September 19 RENEWING OUR COMMITMENTS TO THE KINGDOM ROMANS 12:1-8

RENEWING OUR COMMITMENTS TO THE KINGDOM
ROMANS 12:1-8

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:2

I once had a bicycle that I really loved and often looked at in admiration.  But one good day, due to the climate, one of its parts stopped working and I had to redouble my efforts in order to have a bike again.

It seemed almost impossible, but I was finally able to save enough money to buy a new bike.  Overjoyed, I ran to the store and bought the shiniest one with the most beautiful colors.
Many people were filled with astonishment and asked how I was able to get a newer and better and prettier bike than the old one. I replied to one of them: “I was completed engrossed in that old bike; I was always thinking about it and admiring it, but it was only when some of its pieces fell apart that I was able discover a talent that I had and could use, and this is how I put my gifts to work toward happiness and that’s how I was able to get a new bicycle.”

The renewal of our commitments to God operates in a similar fashion.  We should recognize when our old tasks and habits are no longer pertinent, and assume the new challenges that God gives us.

Prayer: God of life, help us to discover the need for renewal; do not allow us to cling to things that tie down our thoughts and that distance us from your priorities and from your will. Amen.

RENOVANDO LOS COMPROMISOS CON EL REINO
ROMANOS 12:1-8

Sunday, September 18 IN GOD’S HANDS MATTHEW 6:25-34

Sunday, September 18
IN GOD’S HANDS
 MATTHEW 6:25-34
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
Matthew 6:25

We spend our lives thinking about all the things we need in order to be happy or to make someone else happy. When we have low financial means we become distressed, maybe because we don’t have as much as our neighbors. It is time to stop and take a good look at our behavior.  Let’s ask ourselves every day: How many things have we received from our merciful God? Perhaps simplicity, sensitivity and love will take over our beings and we will be able to become one of those people who contribute the most to our humanity or to our resources. Those are true riches that not everyone is lucky enough to have.

When we focus our lives on big material resources we forget that, just like the sea can never be satiated by the rivers, it also takes some work for humans to have their fill of resources.

God will provide for all of our needs; if we place ourselves in his hands, we will be able to live confidently.

Prayer: Creator of life, grant that a spiritual maturity grow within us in order to discern what is most important. Amen.

EN MANOS DE DIOS
 MATEO 6:25-34

Saturday, September 17 PRAY IN THE MIDST OF TEMPTATION MATTHEW 26:40-44

Saturday, September 17
PRAY IN THE MIDST OF TEMPTATION
MATTHEW 26:40-44

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation …
Matthew 26:41

A young man went to visit the pastor of his church one day to ask him to explain how he could become a little better. When he entered the sanctuary he found that man kneeling on the floor and lifting prayers to God.  The young man, with a trace of anxiousness, waited until he could have his pastor’s attention.

Once the pastor finished his devotional time, the young man approached him and asked for his advice in order to lead a better life.  Together they walked toward the pastor’s room, from which one could observe, without any problem, the blue skies that fill the space beneath the sun and the dark color surrounding the moon together with the stars. The young man heard his pastor say: “From my room I can see the entire route of the moon and the stars, and up until now I have not observed any of them asking to look better or to shine more brightly.”

If you want to have a purer soul, lift up your requests to heaven because the power of prayer alone will be able to perfect our souls.

Prayer: Lord, grant that we may be content with all the gifts that you bestow upon us. Amen.

ORAD EN MEDIO DE LAS TENTACIONES
MATEO 26:40-44

Friday, September 16 HOLINESS PSALM 15

Friday, September 16
HOLINESS
PSALM 15

Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary?
Who may live on your holy hill?

Psalm 15:1

When the concept of holiness is discussed, one understands it in one’s own way.  Many people interpret it in eminently moral terms as if holiness were a state of individual perfection that is achieved in life and which must be preserved at all costs. Others believe that it is more important to have a contractual commitment with God to build the Kingdom without paying much attention to one’s personal behavior.

For the psalmist, however, it is not possible to live in the presence of God without doing good. This is the way holiness is summarized.

Being holy is not something unattainable, nor is it outside of our human nature.  The spirit of God is in our lives and helps us to take each next step towards goodness. Building the kingdom of God and dwelling in his sanctuary is a daily exercise.

Holiness is a process through which we draw closer to God and his image continues to be perfected in us.

Prayer: Our God, grant that we may dwell in holiness each day by doing good. Amen.

LA SANTIDAD
SALMO  15

¿Quién, Señor, puede habitar en tu santuario?
¿Quién puede vivir en tu santo monte?

Salmo 15:1

Thursday, September 15 STANDING FIRMLY IN FREEDOM GALATIANS 5:1-15

Thursday, September 15
STANDING FIRMLY IN FREEDOM
GALATIANs 5:1-15

Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1

Being free in Christ is a great challenge that we should assume with dignity and maturity. In particular, I remember that when I was a student, as a Presbyterian and reformed I would strike up large debates with young Christians from other denominations. They asserted that those in my Church were too liberal to become saints. My four arguments were clear and simple at the time and remain so today: we do not pretend to be what we are not (we are the youngest within and outside of the Church); we follow Christ out of love and not out of fear of going to hell; we believe in the sanctification of life and not in saintliness as an accomplished act; least of all do we believe in sanctimoniousness.

And I would tell them that we experience these four reasons in absolute freedom because “we have been called to be free” and “where the Spirit of God dwells, there is freedom”.  Of course my reasons were refuted and broadsided by biblical passages and theological arguments by those who tried to immerse me in a deep feeling of guilt. Nevertheless, in spite of all that I learned from them, I never lost the compass of my ecclesial, biblical and theological identity.  I have remained in my Church, serving God.  I have heard that many of those envious guardians of the “holy doctrine” are not active in any church today. I pray that they may return to the flock and learn to handle their freedom in Christ.

Prayer: Gracious God, grant that I recognize which is your path of righteousness and wisdom. Thank you for the freedom that you have given me to follow you. Amen.
