GENESIS 2: 4-15

The Lord God took the man

and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Today we celebrate the Day of Christian Stewardship. The biblical term is translated in our language as “mayordomo,” from the Greek word “oikonomos,” and describes the office of a person entrusted with another’s property. Traditionally the churches have taught and preached that, in a general sense, Christian stewardship implies the giving of our tithes and offerings to God. Nevertheless, to be consistent with the biblical fundamental, this definition also extends to the contribution of our time, gifts or talents.

The Bible teaches us that stewardship comprises two dialectically related ideas: trustworthiness and responsibility. On one hand the steward can be a servant (often a slave!) who enjoys the full trust of the owner because of his strict trustworthiness. On the other hand, he has an exceptional level of freedom because he’s capable of exercising a high degree of responsibility.

The church proclaims, in the 1977 Confession of Faith, that the human vocation is that of being a “good economist,” (a good steward). The “house” (oikos) that the human creature administers is the world, all creation, and everyone is responsible for it before his fellow man and before God.

The Lord invites us to be responsible for creation, to contribute to resolve in the “oikos” the three great evils that afflict it: injustice, war, and environmental deterioration.

Prayer:  Thank you Lord for the opportunity to be stewards in your great Work. Amen.

Hoy celebramos el Día de la Mayordomía Cristiana. El término bíblico que se traduce en nuestro idioma como “mayordomo”, es la palabra griega ‘oikonomos’, y describe el oficio de una persona a la cual se le confía las propiedades de otra. Tradicionalmente las iglesias han enseñado y predicado– en sentido general- que la mayordomía cristiana implica el ofrecimiento a Dios de nuestros diezmos y ofrendas; sin embargo, para ser consistentes con el fundamento bíblico, ésta abarca además la contribución de nuestro tiempo y de nuestros dones o talentos. La Biblia nos enseña que la mayordomía comprende dos ideas dialécticamente relacionados: confiabilidad y responsabilidad. Por un lado el mayordomo puede ser un sirviente (¡muchas veces un esclavo!), que goza de la plena confianza del dueño, por su estricta confiabilidad y, por el otro, tiene un rango excepcional de libertad, porque es capaz de ejercer un alto sentido de responsabilidad.

“La Iglesia proclama  en la Confesión de Fe de 1977 que la vocación humana es la de ser un “buen ecónomo” (o mayordomo). La “casa” (‘oikos’) que administra la criatura humana es el mundo todo de la Creación y cada quien es responsable de ello ante sus semejantes y ante Dios”. El Señor nos invita a ser responsables con la creación, para contribuir a resolver en el ‘oikos’, los tres grandes males que le azotan, a saber: la injusticia, la guerra y el deterioro ambiental.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por  la oportunidad de ser mayordomos en tu gran Obra. Amen.

TEACH YOURSELF TO FORGIVE

MATTHEW 18:21-35

Jesus answered, “I tell you not seven times,

but seventy-seven times.” 

                                                                                                          Matthew 18:22

When someone hurts, tricks or mistreats us, we fill ourselves with rancor without thinking about the consequences it can bring us. Then we say, “Sorry, but I can’t forgive; may God forgive you.” Nevertheless, we think that forgiving is a feeling that should come from emotion, whereas forgiveness is truly a decision, an act of will. When we withhold forgiveness the offense not only stays in the mind, but also goes to our hearts, and there it ends up hurting us even more and filling life with bitterness.

Humanly it’s difficult to forget that which causes us pain, but when we really make the decision to forgive, those memories will have already stopped hurting us. By that act we not only forgive the one who offended us, but also we free ourselves from living with rancor and bitterness. Forgiveness is an act of love toward oneself, since it’s a personal liberation and also an act of obedience to the divine command to love one’s neighbor as oneself. As Shakespeare said, “Forgiveness falls like gentle rain from the sky to the earth, and is twice blessed; it blesses the giver and receiver alike.”

Prayer: Teach us to forgive, Lord, in the same way as you forgive us daily. Amen.

ENSÉÑATE A PERDONAR

MATEO 18:21-35

No te digo que hasta siete veces,

sino hasta setenta y siete veces– le contestó Jesús

Cuando alguien nos lastima, engaña o trata mal, llenamos nuestra vida de rencor, sin pensar en las consecuencias que esto nos puede traer. Entonces decimos: “Lo siento, pero no puedo perdonar. Que lo perdone Dios”

Sin embargo, pensamos que el perdón  es un sentimiento que debe venir de la emoción, cuando verdaderamente el perdón es  una decisión, un acto de voluntad.

Cuando no perdonamos, la ofensa no sólo se queda en la mente, sino que pasa al corazón, y eso termina lastimándonos aun más y llenándonos la vida de amargura.

Humanamente es difícil olvidar eso que nos causó dolor, pero cuando realmente tomamos la decisión de perdonar, ya esos recuerdos  dejan de lastimarnos. Y así mismo no sólo perdonamos a quien nos ofendió, sino que nos liberamos a nosotros mismos de vivir con rencor y amargura.

El perdón es un acto de amor a uno mismo, pues es una liberación personal, y es también un acto de obediencia al mandamiento divino de amar al prójimo como a uno mismo. Como dijo Shakespeare: “El perdón cae como la lluvia suave desde el cielo a la tierra y es dos veces bendito, bendice al que lo da y al que lo recibe”

Oración: Enséñanos a perdonar Señor, de la misma manera como tú nos perdonas diariamente a nosotros. Amén.

FEAR NOT, BECAUSE I AM WITH YOU

JOSHUA 1:1-9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged,

for the Lord, your God, will be with you wherever you go.

                                                                                                                                   Joshua 1:9

We have all, at some time, felt fear; and on more than one occasion we have felt alone. It seems as though the more we pray, the more it appears that God isn’t listening or doesn’t want to answer us.

In my Christian journey I have learned that in the life of every human being there are deserts, but I also learned that we can’t deny that in the middle of those deserts we experience moments of closeness with the Lord.

    

It’s in those moments where the Lord comes like a gentle wind and whispers in our ears: Fear not, don’t be discouraged, because I am your God.  What beautiful words to our ears! This promise gives us the boldness to confront daily difficulties.

Brother, sister, you may possibly be passing through moments in which it seems that you have a tremendous spiritual thirst and cannot find anything in the middle of the desert to satiate it.  It’s there where God creates the ideal moment to be with you, to have one of those unforgettable moments in your life. He gives you living water; it’s impossible to ever experience thirst again. He loves you and will never leave you alone.

 Prayer:  What a beautiful promise! Thank you, my Father, because I know you’re always at my side. Thanks, because when fear or doubt assaults me I can feel your hand guiding me and giving me courage. Amen.

JOSUÉ 1:1-9

Todos en algún momento hemos sentido temor,  y en más de una ocasión nos  hemos sentido  solos. Pareciera como si por más que oramos,  Dios no nos escucha o no quiere contestarnos.

En mi caminar cristiano he aprendido que en la vida de todo ser humano hay desiertos, pero también aprendí que no podemos negar que en medio de esos desiertos experimentamos momentos de cercanía  con el Señor.

Es en esos momentos donde el Señor  viene como un viento apacible y nos susurra al oído: No temas, no desmayes, porque yo soy tu Dios.

¡Qué bellas palabras para nuestras vidas!

Esta promesa es la que nos da la valentía de enfrentarnos a las dificultades diarias

Hermano, hermana,  posiblemente estés pasando por momentos en los cuales pareciera que tienes una sed espiritual tremenda y no encuentras nada en medio del desierto para saciarla. Es ahí donde Dios  propicia el momento idóneo  para encontrarse contigo, para tener uno de esos momentos inolvidables en tu vida. El te da esa agua viva con la cual es imposible volver a tener sed. Él te ama y jamás te dejará solo.

Oración: ¡Qué bella promesa! Gracias mi Padre, porque sé que siempre estás a mi lado. Gracias porque cuando me asalta el temor o la duda, puedo sentir tu mano guiándome y dándome aliento. Amén.

EVERYTHING UNDER OUR CONTROL?

JUDGES 11:19-38

Do not keep talking so proudly

 or let your mouth speak such arrogance,

for the Lord is a God who knows,

and by Him deeds are weighed.

                                                                                                         1 Samuel 2:3

Today’s passage contains a profound lesson. Jephthah, one of Israel’s judges, promises to offer in sacrifice the first thing he comes upon after the victory against the Ammonites. As it turns out, that thing was a person, his daughter, who doesn’t resist the commission of the promise because of what it represented to her father. The sacrifice is consummated. So this is how a memorable Israeli hero carries in himself the terrible weight of his daughter’s death because of enormous arrogance and the great sin of determining the fate of others - and nothing more and nothing less due to happenstance.

We should guard against committing Jephthah’s sin. We shouldn’t think we have the prerogative to decide, redirect, or disrupt the lives of those around us, because we could suffer great surprise and disappointment. When we think our privileged position gives us unlimited authority, as was the case with Jephthah, remember the high price he had to pay for his arrogance. God has the ultimate control of all situations in our lives, and it’s to Him we should commend ourselves in whatever undertaking we may attempt. It is He who insures our comings and goings, and who provides us with discernment in life’s most difficult situations.

If today you are going through heavy trials and you feel beleaguered, have faith and entrust yourself to God like Jephthah, and you’ll continue forward without stumbling. But once you’ve passed the test don’t defy God with decisions that annul divine participation in the achieved goal. Don’t promise what you shouldn’t, and you will not suffer bitter consequences.

Prayer:  Our Father, cull from us that which doesn’t permit us to depend on you, above all when it leads us to arrogance and vainglory. Amen

¿Todo bajo nuestro control?

Jueces 11:29-38

Dejen de hablar con tanto orgullo y altivez;

¡no profieran palabras soberbias! El Señor es un Dios

que todo lo sabe y él es quien juzga las acciones.

El pasaje de hoy encierra en sí una profunda lección. Jefté, uno de los jueces de Israel promete ofrecer en holocausto al primero que saliera a su paso luego de la victoria contra los amonitas. Resulta que esta persona fue su hija, quien no se resiste al cumplimiento de la promesa por lo que esto representaba para su padre. El sacrificio entonces, es consumado. Es así como un héroe memorable de Israel carga consigo el terrible peso de la muerte de su hija por la enorme arrogancia, y gran pecado, de pretender decidir sobre la vida de otros, y nada más y nada menos que al azar. Nosotros debemos cuidarnos de cometer este pecado de Jefté. No pensemos que tenemos la prerrogativa de decidir, desviar o distorsionar la vida de quienes nos rodean, porque podremos sufrir grandes sorpresas y decepciones. Cuando pensamos que nuestro lugar de privilegio en cierto espacio nos da una potestad ilimitada como la de Jefté, recordemos el alto precio que este tuvo que pagar por su arrogancia. El control último de todas las situaciones de nuestra vida lo tiene Dios, y es a él a quien debemos encomendarnos en cualquier empresa que acometamos. Es él quien guarda nuestras salidas y entradas y quien nos provee de discernimiento ante las más difíciles situaciones de la vida.

Si usted hoy está atravesando por pesadas pruebas y se siente atribulado, tenga fe y encomiéndese a Dios como Jefté, y seguirá hacia adelante sin tropiezo; pero una vez atravesada la prueba, no desafíe a Dios con decisiones que anulen la participación divina en la meta alcanzada. No prometa lo que no debe y no sufrirá amargas consecuencias.

Oración: Señor nuestro, desarraiga de nosotros lo que no nos permite depender de ti, sobre todo cuando nos impulsa a la arrogancia y la vanagloria. Amén.

I still remember the first time my older brother taught me how to ride a bike. They’d bought it for me the night before. It was blue. I’d gotten up at six in the morning that day to learn how to get on it. My brother took the seat and began to push me, running at my side, giving me the security that nothing would happen. We did various turns and each time I was becoming more self-assured by practice.  During one of these times, without my noticing, my brother let go. I pedaled a few meters before realizing I was riding on my own. As soon as I caught on, I lost my balance, and crashed on a neighbor’s sidewalk. It was my first bicycle fall, one I’ll never forget. It was a hard blow, but my desire to be able to ride made me attempt it many more times. I fell innumerable times, but all the hours I enjoyed myself on it were incredible. My bicycle was my companion during my childhood and youth.

I ask myself what would have happened if I had decided not to attempt it ever again after the first time I’d fallen. I believe my childhood and youth wouldn’t have been the same; I wouldn’t have experienced adventures that have remained amazing in my mind forever.

We will always be confronted with different falls, with painful moments that will try to keep us from ever trying again. Because the pain of some falls is so deep that many times our minds avoid trying again.  

If you have experienced hard falls, pains, if your strength has left you and you believe it’s not worth the trouble to try again because of the fear of injuring yourself, I say this: Get up again! You’ll fall many times, you’ll get bruised, and it’ll hurt. But get up, as many times as is necessary, because God will not abandon you.

Prayer:  Thank you, Father, for your constant care, for your displays of love for us. Today we ask that you stay at our side at each misstep we make. Help us to get up. Amen.

SI CAES, LEVÁNTATE

PROVERBIOS 24:16-18

Porque siete veces cae el justo, y vuelve a levantarse…

Proverbios 24:16a

Aun recuerdo la primera vez que mi hermano mayor me enseñó a manejar la bicicleta. Me la habían comprado la noche anterior. Era azul. Yo me había levantado a las seis de la mañana de ese día para aprender a montarla. Mi hermano tomó el asiento y comenzó a impulsarme, a correr a la par mía dándome la seguridad de que no me pasaría nada. Dimos varias vueltas y cada vez iba tomando más práctica. En una de esas sin percatarme mi hermano me soltó. Pedaleé unos cuantos metros antes de darme cuenta de que iba solo. Cundo me di cuenta perdí todo el equilibrio y fui a parar a la acera de un vecino.

Fue mi primera caída en bicicleta, la cual nunca olvidaré.  Fue un golpe duro. Pero mi deseo de  poder montar hizo que lo intentara muchas veces más. Me caí en innumerables  ocasiones, pero todas las horas que disfruté sobre ella fueron increíbles. Mi bicicleta fue mi compañera durante mi niñez y juventud.

Me pregunto qué hubiera pasado si la primera vez que me caí hubiera decidido no intentarlo nunca más. Creo que mi infancia y juventud no hubieran sido igual, no hubiese experimentado aventuras que quedaron plasmadas en mi mente para siempre.

Siempre nos enfrentaremos con diferentes caídas, con momentos dolorosos que querrán obligarnos a no intentarlo nunca más. Y es que el dolor de algunas caídas es tan profundo que nuestra mente muchas veces  evita  volverlo a intentar.

Si has experimentado caídas fuertes, dolorosas, si las fuerzas se te han ido y crees que no vale la pena volverlo a intentar por miedo de lastimarte te digo: ¡Levántate! ¡Inténtalo otra vez! Caerás muchas veces, te golpearás, te dolerá. Pero levántate cuantas veces sea necesario. Porque Dios no te dejará solo.

Oración: Gracias Padre, por tus constantes cuidados, por tus muestras de amor para con nosotros. Hoy te pedimos que te mantengas a nuestro lado en cada mal paso que demos, ayudándonos a levantar. Amén.

PHILIPPIANS 3: 12-14

I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

We struggle daily in life with situations that aren’t to our liking; situations, which oftentimes lead us to do things we don’t want to do, and in the depths of our hearts we want to change.

Perhaps at some given moment we succeed in stabilizing our ways, desisting from sin for a time; but nevertheless, for some reason we return to it, completing a vicious circle where we repent and go forth for a while in the good way, only to later return to the same error.

Today, if you feel confused and sad, and to a certain degree angry with yourself for having been defeated again, permit me to tell you that this shouldn’t discourage you. Rather, we should understand that we are progressively being restored, bit by bit, and that it doesn’t happen overnight, and that above all God is working in us.

Today I want to invite you to begin anew: don’t give yourself up for lost; don’t believe you’ll never be able to direct your life. Don’t believe you’re a lost cause; believe that if you permit yourself to take God’s hand you can be victorious. Begin anew; it may be difficult, but in Christ everything is possible. He doesn’t accuse you; He raises you up and gives you new opportunities.

Prayer: Lord, help us when we fall into sin time and time again, even without wanting to in our hearts. Raise us up when we descend into dejection and desolation. Amen.

COMENZAR DE NUEVO

FILIPENSES 3:12-14

Todo lo puedo en Cristo que me fortalece

Filipenses 4:13

En la vida luchamos diariamente con situaciones que no son de nuestro agrado, situaciones que muchas veces nos llevan a hacer cosas que no quisiéramos hacer y que en el fondo de nuestro corazón quisiéramos cambiar.

En algún momento quizás logramos estabilizar nuestro camino, apartando por un tiempo el pecado, pero  sin embargo por alguna razón volvimos a lo mismo, convirtiendo en un círculo vicioso donde nos arrepentimos, caminamos por un tiempo en el buen camino, y luego volvemos al mismo error.

Si te sientes hoy confundido y triste y hasta cierto punto un poco enojado contigo mismo porque te dejaste vencer nuevamente, déjame decirte que esto no nos debe desanimar. Mas bien debemos entender que nosotros nos vamos restaurando progresivamente, que no se puede lograr de la noche a la mañana, y que por sobre todas las cosas, Dios está  trabajando en nosotros.

Hoy quiero invitarte a que comiences de nuevo, a que no te des por vencido, a que no creas que nunca podrás encaminar tu vida.  No creas que eres un caso perdido. Piensa que si te dejas tomar de la mano de Dios, puedes vencer. Comienza nuevamente. Quizás sea difícil, pero en Cristo todo lo podemos.  Él no te acusa, Él te levanta, te da nuevas oportunidades.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos cuando caemos una vez tras otra en el pecado, aun sin quererlo nuestro corazón. Levántanos cuando caemos en el desánimo y la desolación. Amén.

THE LIGHT

LUKE 1:67-69

Because of the tender mercy of our God,

by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven

to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death,

 to guide our feet into the path of peace.

                                                                                                                Luke 1:78-79

    

Every morning I watch for the sunrise because I feel something very special, an immense gratitude for a precious gift. The sun gives us its heat, its light. The light is the symbol of a new opportunity to live.

When I feel that light I think of Jesus Christ, who is the light par excellence. All the darkness and gloom of this world disappears. But we shouldn’t be complacent in those instances of spiritual fullness. There are many elderly, children, people who feel alone and abandoned, and others who are victims of family violence, be it gender or social, whom we should lead toward that saving light which is Jesus. There are many people in need of justice, love, and peace who wait for that light.  

     With the light that God gifts us – that interior light – He wants to illuminate and guide us so that we may go throughout the world – our small world which is the community where we live – so that we might carry light for those who only see sadness, indifference, physical and spiritual aggressions.

May we let the Lord’s light penetrate into our spirit, illuminate the way of peace for us, and guide us to be beacons of light that may give life to those living in shadows.

Prayer:  Good Father, give me strength and valor to bring your light to those around me. Amen.

Día del Museo Nacional Presbiteriano “Blanca R. Ojeda” (Cárdenas)

LA LUZ

    LUCAS 1: 67-79

Porque nuestro Dios, en su gran misericordia,

nos trae de lo alto el sol de un nuevo día,

para dar luz a los que viven en la más profunda oscuridad,

y dirigir nuestros pasos  por el camino de la paz.  

    

   Lucas 1:78-79

Cada mañana busco la salida del sol porque siento algo muy especial, una gratitud inmensa por un regalo precioso. El sol nos regala calor,  su luz. La luz es el símbolo de una nueva oportunidad de vivir.

Cuando siento esa luz, pienso en Jesucristo  que es la luz por excelencia. Toda la oscuridad y las tinieblas de este mundo desaparecen. Pero no debemos refugiarnos en esos instantes de plenitud espiritual, hay muchos ancianos, niños, personas que sienten solos y abandonados, otras que son víctimas de la violencia  familiar, de género o social a los que debemos llevar hacia esa luz salvadora, que es Jesús. Hay muchas personas necesitadas de justicia, amor y paz, que esperan por esa luz.

Con la luz que Dios nos regala, esa luz interior, Él quiere iluminarnos y guiarnos para que vayamos por el mundo, nuestro pequeño mundo que es la comunidad donde vivimos, para que llevemos luz para quienes sólo ven  las tristezas, indiferencia, agresiones físicas y espirituales. Dejemos que la luz del Señor penetre en nuestro espíritu, nos ilumine por el camino de la paz y nos guíe para ser portadores de luz que de vida a los que viven en tinieblas.

Oración: Padre bueno, dame fuerza y valor para llevar tu luz a los que me rodean. Amén.
