JOSHUA 1:7-9

A few months ago we had the opportunity to participate in a wonderful program of Bible distribution, sponsored by the Biblical Commission of the Council of Churches of Cuba, and overseen by the Church of the Rock, in Florida.  At the initial worship service, the invited preacher shared a story that impressed us all.  Apparently many of the Bibles that we received on this occasion were thanks to the strength, ingenuity and sensitivity of a man over ninety years old.  He had gathered the coins that he won at a bingo game in the nursing home where he lived until he collected the considerable amount to contribute more than one hundred of the Bibles for Cuba.  This story moved everyone.  At times we think that older people or people with limited resources don’t have many possibilities for serving God and God’s people.  Nevertheless, this man showed that at his age he was able to be an instrument of God so that his Word could cross borders and touch many people in need of hope. Today is a day to give thanks to God for the life of this man, who, like many other anonymous people, has dedicated his life to serving and sharing the Word, regardless of his limitations.

Prayer: Our God, you have words of life eternal for us. Allow us to share your good news regardless of our limitations. We give you thanks especially for the United Bible Societies and the Cuban Biblical Commission, and for all the people who have served in translating and distributing your Word.  Amen.

Hace algunos meses tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en un programa maravilloso de distribución de Biblias, convocado por la Comisión Bíblica del Consejo de Iglesias de Cuba, y auspiciado por la Iglesia de la Roca, de la Florida. En el devocional inicial, el predicador invitado compartió una historia que nos impactó a todos. Y es que muchas de las Biblias que recibíamos en esa ocasión, se debían al esfuerzo, ingenio y sensibilidad de un anciano de más de noventa años. Él se dedicó a juntar los centavos que ganaba en un juego de bingo en el hogar de ancianos donde vivía, hasta llegar a la cantidad considerable para contribuir a la distribución de más de un centenar de Biblias para Cuba. Aquella historia nos conmovió a todos. A veces pensamos que las personas mayores o con pocos recursos no tienen muchas posibilidades de servir a Dios y a su pueblo. Sin embargo, este hombre demostró que en la ancianidad él podía ser un instrumento de Dios para que su Palabra atraviese fronteras y llegue a tantas personas necesitadas de esperanza. 

Hoy es un día, para agradecer a Dios por la vida de este hombre que, como tantas otras personas anónimas, ha dedicado su vida a servir y a compartir la Palabra, sin importar sus limitaciones.

Oración: Dios nuestro, tú tienes palabras de vida eterna para nosotros. Permite que podamos compartir tu buena noticia sin importar nuestras limitaciones. Te agradecemos especialmente por las Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas y la Comisión Bíblica Cubana, y por tantas personas que te han servido al traducir y distribuir tu Palabra. Amén.

REACHING ETERNAL LIFE

MARK 10:17-31 

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 

Matthew 6:21 CEB

This passage, although well known, can seem foreign to you.  Maybe you think:  I’m not rich, this doesn’t fit.  At times we get close to Jesus, but we are not able to take on the commitment and the responsibility of following him, because we are attached to many things.  Everything has its cost.  

In the midst of these times in which the value of what we possess has more potential than human values and where people are measured by what they have and not by who they are, we are challenged by Jesus.  To sell what we have is not to take away all of our goods, it is to get rid of all that distances us from reality and feeds our ego, creating barriers that separate us from God.  It is better to look at our scale of values, rethinking our priorities, that is where we sometimes don’t look first. 

There are no formulas for reaching eternal life, instead there are roads that are not impossible, but which demand trust in the one who makes possible the impossible:  God. 

Prayer: Our God, we want so much, and we need so little!  Guide us and forgive us.  Renew our hearts always, in the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

ALCANZAR LA VIDA ETERNA

MARCOS 10:17-31

Porque donde esté vuestro tesoro,

allí estará también vuestro corazón

Mateo 6:21

Es este un pasaje que, aunque conocido, puede parecerte ajeno. Tal vez piensas: yo no soy rico, eso no va conmigo. A veces nos acercamos a Jesús pero no estamos dispuestos a asumir el compromiso y la responsabilidad de seguirle, porque estamos apegados a muchas cosas. Todo tiene un costo.

En medio de estos tiempos en que el valor de lo que se posee se potencia más que los valores humanos y donde se mide a las personas por lo que tienen y no por lo que son, estamos retados por Jesús. Vender lo que tenemos no es despojarnos de todos los bienes, es despojarnos de todo lo que nos distancie de la realidad y alimente nuestro ego, creando barreras que nos alejan de Dios. Es más bien mirar nuestra escala de valores repensando cuales son las prioridades, es aquí donde a veces no buscamos primero.

 Para alcanzar la vida eterna no hay fórmulas, hay caminos que no son imposibles, pero que demandan confianza en quien puede hacer posible lo imposible: Dios.

Oración: Dios nuestro, ¡queremos tanto y necesitamos tan poco! Guíanos y perdónanos. Renueva siempre nuestro corazón, en el nombre de Jesús te lo pedimos. Amén

IN THE FIRE OF LOVE

PSALM 67:1-7

...Let all the people thank you!

The hands of almost one hundred people united to form a circle around the fire.  Almost all of us came from different places, different countries. While we sang hymns of praise and gratitude, I could not help reflecting--when will the day arrive when all of us unite our hands in praising God?

This psalm that we have read was possibly sung by a choir at the harvest festival and had no other purpose than to praise God and give thanks for God’s blessings. 

Many institutions in the world are committed to unity of humanity:  for example, the United Nations, founded in 1945; the World Council of Churches, founded in Amsterdam in 1948, and many others, all directed to seeking peace and reconciliation. 

But the Psalmist went much further, begging for God’s mercy and God’s blessing as a means to achieve peace and have united praise.  We should not think that the nations will praise together, if beforehand we do not make this unifying and reverent spirit a reality among us.  The road may be long, but at the end, if we remain faithful, God “will shine his face upon us:” Let us do our small part. 

Prayer: Thank you, God of peace, for your constant presence.  Help us to unite our hands and hearts in order to feel the unifying fire of your love, to feel the infinite grace of your peace.  Amen.

Día Internacional de la Paz

EN EL FUEGO DEL AMOR

SALMO 67:1-7

...todos los pueblos te alaben

Salmo 67: 5

Las manos de casi cien personas se unieron formando un círculo en torno a la fogata. Casi todos proveníamos de lugares diferentes, de diferentes pueblos. Mientras se cantaban himnos de alabanza y gratitud, no pude sustraerme a la reflexión. ¿Cuándo llegará el día en que todos nos demos las manos para unidos alabar a Dios?

Este Salmo que hemos leído, posiblemente se entonaba por un coro en la fiesta de la cosecha y no tenía otra finalidad que la de alabar a Dios y dar gracias por sus bendiciones.

No son pocas las instituciones en el mundo que hacen esfuerzos por lograr la unidad de la humanidad: la Organización de Naciones Unidas, fundada en 1945; el Consejo Mundial de Iglesias constituido en Ámsterdam en 1948, y otras muchas, todas encaminadas a buscar la paz y la reconciliación.

Pero el Salmista va mucho más lejos, implora por la misericordia de Dios y su bendición como paso previo para alcanzar la paz y poder alabar unidos. No pensemos que los pueblos alabarán juntos, si antes nosotros no logramos que ese espíritu unificador y reverente se haga realidad en nuestro medio. El camino será largo, pero al final, si nos mantenemos fieles, Dios “hará resplandecer su rostro sobre nosotros”. Hagamos la pequeña parte que nos corresponde.

Oración: Gracias Dios de paz, por tu presencia en todas horas. Ayúdanos a unir nuestras manos y corazones para sentir el fuego unificador de tu amor, para sentir la gracia infinita de tu paz. Amén.

THE CALL OF GOD

  GALATIANS 1:11-19

I didn’t receive it or learn it from a human.

It came through a revelation from Jesus Christ.

 Galatians 1:12 CEB

Although it brought him more detractors than admirers, Paul’s experience on the road to Damascus was something that he shared constantly during his ministry. 

Recognizing that God in Christ had called him to be an apostle and the message that he preached had not been received at the request of anyone, not even the other apostles, he was completely convinced.  He recognized that his calling and the authority of his apostleship were not linked to the rest of the twelve.  Although he was not superior to them, neither did he feel inferior at all, because he received the message directly from Jesus Christ.

Many people think that only candidates for pastor are called, as if other ministries of the church are of lesser value and do not equally come from God.  He is calling you in many ways for very important ministries, without a doubt.  God waits for you to decide.  The harvest is great and the workers are few. 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the gifts you have given me. I want to accept your call:  use me and guide me.  Amen.

EL LLAMADO DE DIOS

  GÁLATAS  1:11-19

Pues yo ni lo recibí ni lo aprendí de hombre alguno,

sino por revelación de Jesucristo.

La experiencia de Pablo en el camino de Damasco aunque le trajo más detractores que adeptos, fue algo que él compartió constantemente durante su ministerio.

Del reconocimiento de que Dios en Cristo le había llamado para ser apóstol y el mensaje que predicaba no lo había recibido a instancias de nadie, ni siquiera de los otros apóstoles, está plenamente convencido. De ahí que reconoce que su condición y  la autoridad de su apostolado no están ligadas al resto de los doce. Por tanto si bien no es superior a ellos, tampoco siente que sea para nada inferior, porque la recibió directamente de Jesucristo.

Muchas personas piensan que el llamado ocurre solo a los candidatos al pastorado, como si otros ministerios que hay en la iglesia fueran menores y no vinieran igualmente de Dios. Él te está llamando de múltiples maneras para ministerios muy importantes, sin lugar a dudas. Dios espera que te decidas. La mies es mucha y los obreros pocos.

Oración: Señor, gracias por los dones que me has regalado, quiero aceptar tu llamado, úsame y guíame. Amén

“NO ONE IS TO BLAME”

GENESIS 3:4-13

       

“The woman you gave me,

she gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate.”

An old proverb says: “nobody looks bad since the invention of excuses” and as the well-known singing duo Buena Fe repeats in one of their songs: the blame, the evil blame, belongs to no one.  No one likes to be blamed. 

This story from Genesis shows us that disobedience triggers a chain reaction of evasion and excuses in order to not admit what they had done. To err is human, and so too is knowing you are responsible. 

We live in times when the situation becomes even more difficult so that for many people robbery is a solution because “low wages” are to blame, or because “life is so difficult that you have to struggle.” These are justifications that try to legitimize the lack of responsibility and the distortion of values that proliferate like a bad weed. 

In the midst of social permissiveness and lack of discipline, self-assurance, indolence and lack of responsibility that we might find around us or within us, we are not simple observers.  Think of what you will say when God asks you:  “Where are you?”

Prayer: I want to do the right thing God, help me.  Amen.

“LA CULPA NO LA TIENE NADIE”

GÉNESIS 3:4-13

       

 La mujer que me diste por compañera

me dio del árbol, y yo comí

Un antiguo refrán dice: “desde que se inventó la disculpa nadie queda mal” y el conocido dúo Buena fe, repite en una de sus canciones que la culpa, la maldita culpa, no la tiene nadie. A nadie le gusta ser culpable.

Este relato del Génesis nos muestra cómo la desobediencia provoca una reacción en cadena de evasivas y disculpas para no admitir lo que habían hecho. Si bien equivocarse es de humanos, también lo es saber ser responsables.

Vivimos tiempos en que la situación se torna más difícil ya que para muchas personas el robo se ha convertido en resolver y la culpa la tienen “los bajos salarios”, o “que la vida está muy difícil, que hay que luchar.” Justificaciones que tratan de legitimar la falta de responsabilidad y la distorsión de valores que proliferan como mala yerba.

En medio de las licencias e indisciplinas sociales, ante el desenfado, la indolencia e irresponsabilidades que podemos encontrar o, dentro de las que podemos encontrarnos, no precisamente como simples observadores, piensa qué dirás cuando Dios te pregunte: ¿Dónde estás tú?

Oración: Quiero hacer lo correcto Señor, ayúdame. Amén

IT WAS GOD

GENESIS 45:1-8

You didn’t send me here; it was God….

Genesis 45:8 CEB

The story of Joseph is one of the most popular stories of the Old Testament; it has everything—jealousy, love, hate, revenge, and reconciliation.

Joseph went through many difficulties and suffered at the hands of his brothers, but it is striking when he reflects on his life in front of his brothers that he gives priority to God’s will:  “It was God who brought me to this point and not you…”

This story makes us think that God always has plans for our lives.  Maybe at times it is hard to discover the will of God and we think that because of this person or another something is happening to us, or that “by chance” this or that is resolved.

For those who trust in God, chance does not exist.  God has the whole world in his hands like the children’s song says, and this helps us remember that nothing happens beyond the purposes that God has for us.

It is up to us to trust.  What happens is for our good, and although at the time we do not understand it, in due course we will see that behind each experience was the hand of God.   

Prayer:  Help me Lord to discover your purposes for my life and above all, help me to trust.  Amen.

FUE DIOS

GÉNESIS  45:1-8

Así pues, no me enviasteis acá  vosotros, sino Dios…

Génesis 45:8

 La historia de José es una de las historias del Antiguo Testamento que más llama la atención; hay de todo: celos, amor, odio, venganza y reconciliación.

José atravesó muchas dificultades y sufrió a causa de sus hermanos, pero llama la atención cuando hace el balance de su vida frente a sus hermanos que pone en primer plano la voluntad de Dios: “Fue Dios quien me trajo hasta aquí y no ustedes...”

Esta historia nos debe hacer pensar que siempre Dios tiene planes en nuestras vidas. Quizás a veces nos cueste trabajo descubrir la voluntad de Dios y pensemos que por esta persona o la otra, nos está ocurriendo algo, o que “por casualidad” se resolvió esto o aquello.

Para quienes confían en Dios la casualidad no existe. Él tiene  todo el mundo en sus manos como dice la canción infantil, y eso nos recuerda que nada se sale de los propósitos que Dios tiene para nosotros.

Nos toca entonces confiar. Lo que ocurra es para nuestro bien, aunque en el momento a lo mejor no lo entendemos, ya el tiempo nos mostrará que detrás de cada experiencia estuvo la mano de Dios.

Oración: Ayúdame Señor, a descubrir tus propósitos en mi vida y sobre todo ayúdame a confiar. Amén.

I WISH YOU ENOUGH…

MATTHEW 6:25-34

Instead, desire first and foremost God’s kingdom and God’s righteousness,

 and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33 CEB

I wish you enough rain to better appreciate the sun.

I wish you enough happiness to maintain your living spirit.

I wish you enough pain so that the little pleasures in life will seem bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your desires.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you own.

I wish you enough “hellos” so that they carry you through to your “final goodbye.”

Therefore, my friend, I wish you enough!

They say that “It takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate him or her, a day to love him or her, but a whole lifetime to forget him or her.”

This is a short message to let you know that you should not live in such a hurry; now is the time to slow down and enjoy what is around you, especially the people who surround you.  Look daily for the little signs of the kingdom of God, and follow them in the practice of justice with the people who surround you, and God will add to your life all that you need.

Prayer:  Forgive me Lord for living life at such speed that I lose the joy of it.  Amen.

TE DESEO LO SUFICIENTE

MATEO 6:25-34

Por lo tanto busquen primeramente el  reino de Dios

y su justicia, y todas estas cosas les serán añadidas

Mateo 6:33

Te deseo la suficiente lluvia para apreciar más el sol.

Te deseo la suficiente felicidad para mantener tu espíritu vivo.

Te deseo el suficiente dolor para que los pequeños placeres de la vida parezcan más grandes.

Te deseo la suficiente ganancia para satisfacer tus deseos.

Te deseo la suficiente pérdida para apreciar todo lo que posees.

Te deseo los suficientes “holas” para que te lleven a través del “adiós final”.

Entonces, mi amigo y mi amiga, ¡Te deseo lo suficiente!

Dicen que “toma un minuto encontrar a una persona especial, una hora para apreciarla, un día para amarla, pero una vida entera para olvidarla”.

Este es un pequeño mensaje para dejarte saber que no debes vivir  tan  apurado y ya es hora de bajar la velocidad y disfrutar de tu alrededor, especialmente de la gente que está a tu alrededor. Busca diariamente las pequeñas señales del reino de Dios y síguelas en la práctica de la justicia con la gente que te rodea, todo lo  demás que necesites, Dios lo añadirá a tu vida.

Oración: Perdóname Señor por vivir  la vida a tanta velocidad que me pierdo disfrutar de ella. Amén.
