OUR BOX OF TREASURES

MATTHEW 6:24-33

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6:33

A few days ago as I was on my way to visit a sick person in our congregation, I found a small shop that sold handmade arts and crafts. I quickly stopped to look, as my attention was drawn to the postcards made by hand, the little soaps in cute shapes, the candles of different sizes and shapes.  Everything was made by hand, with great care and at very good prices.  I conversed with the shop owner for a bit and she confessed that on occasion, when she has few sales, she has thought of closing it.  I said to her: Don’t close it; we really need places like this, it is your way of helping our society. 

Our country has begun to support changes in the social and economic structure and there has been a proliferation of private “businesses” in almost every town, but in many cases the services offered are expensive and of poor quality.  We need to be careful that the urge and anxiousness to obtain money does not make a dent in the values that we have cultivated such as solidarity, creativity, and honorable work. The shop I found on my way today made me think about our lives as that delightful shop, as a box of treasures where spiritual things are not sacrificed for material things, where the soul is not sold, where spirituality does not cede its place to pomposity or shininess or superficiality…but where those eternal values of God’s kingdom that Jesus taught us are cultivated.

Prayer: Our God, help us to cultivate the values of your kingdom above all else:  sharing, loving others…Help us to dignify work that is just and not the kind that is done in order to make a few people rich to the detriment of others.

NUESTRA TIENDA DE ENCANTOS

MATEO 6: 24-33

“Por lo tanto, busquen primeramente el reino de Dios

y su justicia, y todas estas cosas les serán añadidas”

Hace algunos días me dirigía a hacer una visita a una persona enferma de la congregación y en el camino encontré una tiendecita cuya oferta eran objetos artesanales. Rápidamente me detuve, pues las postales de papel manufacturado, los pequeños jabones con formas muy graciosas, las velas de diversos tamaños y colores llamaron mi atención. Todo era hecho de manera artesanal, con un gusto tremendo y a muy buen precio. Conversé un rato con la dueña de la tienda, y ella me confesó que en ocasiones, cuando no tiene muchas ventas, ha pensado cerrarla. Yo le dije: no cierres, nos hacen mucha falta lugares como este, es tu manera de ayudar a nuestra sociedad.

Nuestro país está protagonizando cambios en la estructura social y económica y en casi todos los pueblos proliferan “negocios” particulares, pero en muchas ocasiones los servicios prestados resultan caros y de poca calidad. Debemos cuidar que el afán y la ansiedad por obtener dinero no haga mella en valores que siempre hemos cultivado tales como la solidaridad, la creatividad, el trabajo honrado. La tienda que encontré en mi camino ese día me hizo reflexionar en nuestras vidas como esa tienda de encantos, donde no se sacrifica lo espiritual por lo material, donde no se vende el alma, donde la espiritualidad no cede espacio a la pompa, el brillo, la superficialidad… sino que se cultivan aquellos eternos valores del reino de Dios que Jesús nos enseñó.

Oración: Dios nuestro, ayúdanos a cultivar más que nada los valores de tu reino: el compartir, el amor el prójimo...  Ayúdanos a dignificar el trabajo justo y no el que se hace para enriquecimiento de unos pocos en detrimento de otros.
