Sunday, December 21 I AM, BUT YOU ARE NOT REVELATION 3:7-13

Sunday, December 21
I AM, BUT YOU ARE NOT
                                                                                                                                                    REVELATION 3:7-13
“I know your deeds.”
Revelation 3:8
One of the problems in the Church in Philadelphia was the ongoing discussion about who were the true heirs to the promise made to Abraham. “Those who claim to be Jews though they are not” may refer to the Jews who refused to accept Jesus, such as the Christians who insisted on complying with the entire law.  The issue of open and closed doors plays an important role in the letter.

Unfortunately there are people who believe that they have the power to say who is saved and who is not, who enjoys God’s favor, and who does not.  And this is almost always done based on what a specific group thinks is correct.

If the Christians in Philadelphia were now being excluded by certain “false Jews,” they should not be worried about them, because it is not they, but Jesus, who has the true key and who has opened the door for them that nobody can close.

Prayer: This Christmas we wish to reaffirm our conviction that you have been born for each human being.  You have come into this world of ours in order to call us all, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters of one Father alone.  Amen.

YO SI, PERO TU NO
                                                                                                                                                     Apocalipsis 3:7-13
“Yo sé todo lo que haces”
Apocalipsis 3:8

Saturday, December 20 PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR DREAMS MATTHEW 1:18-25

Saturday, December 20
pay attention to YOUR dreams

Matthew 1:18-25
“When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.”
Matthew 1:24
We should grant importance to what we dream.  Of course I am not referring to using them for playing those games of chance that are so popular these days.  I am talking about opening our senses to signs from God in order to discover his will in even the least expected details.

Something like this happened to Joseph in today’s biblical passage.  Instead of ignoring that absurd dream that implied endless challenges for him as a Jewish man, he understood it for what it was:  a revelation from God that would bring hope and life for all humanity.

Nowadays it can be just as great a challenge as it was for Joseph to follow, listen to and lend credibility to our dreams.  But if we cling to our faith and not to what “others will say,” then we too will be assuming the place in which God has placed us with dignity.   Let us allow ourselves to be inspired by God in order to attain our goals; let us not become discouraged and let us acknowledge that He is with us.  An important key in this story about Joseph was his obedience to God, which implies humbleness, faith and hope in his promises.  Let us allow God to guide our dreams and let us obey his will, and we will thus live abundantly and will make others participants of all the blessings that God bestows upon us each day.

Prayer: Inspire us to live by trusting in you and following your signs.  Amen.

Atender a los sueños

Mateo 1:18-25

Friday, December 19 EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON YOU JOHN 15:26-27

Friday, December 19
EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON YOU

JOHN 15:26-27
“When the Counselor comes…he will testify about me.”
John 15:26

I made a watercolor painting one day of a seascape with some seagulls circling over the deeply blue ocean.  The seagulls that I painted were not as beautiful as God made them, and I don’t know why I cannot capture the brilliance or the movement of the real waves.  But I attempted it.

We Christians try to live as Christ lived. At times the brushstrokes of our lives are not as precise as they should be, our hands are not as generous as his, our words are not as wise, our voice is not as soft, but we make an attempt.

When God looks at the life that I am trying to live for Christ, He sees faults, stains and errors; but I know that beyond my limitations, He sees my motives and that beyond my weakness, He sees my heart and its impulses.

Will the picture that I am painting today with my life be a good witness to my faith in Christ?

Prayer: Help us, Lord, to be good witnesses with our lives.  Give us new inspiration during this Advent so that we can show others all the colors of your gospel.  Amen.

TODO DEPENDE DE TI

JUAN 15:26-27
“pero cuando venga el Consolador…
él dará testimonio acerca de mí”
Juan 15:26

Thursday, December 18 GOD WILL HELP YOU AT BREAK OF DAY PSALM 46

Thursday, December 18
GOD WILL HELP YOU AT BREAK OF DAY

PSALM 46
“God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”
Psalm 46:5

I don’t know what my day will be like today.  I have twenty-four unknown hours before me, of which I cannot predict a single minute. Of course I can, and do, plan my day, and organize it.  Work, study, walks, rest, recreation.  I can plan them in whatever way will most benefit me.  But I cannot decide with any certainty the circumstances that will occur within any one of them.

Bad news, illnesses or accidents appear in our lives without forewarning and can turn them upside down in only a few seconds.  However, this promise from the Lord accompanies us as of the first hours of the morning.  He is present in each minute of this near future. He does not appear in the afternoon, when the circumstances have already overtaken us or when the day’s problems have overwhelmed our souls.  No. His help will come in the waking hours, just as we begin the day, and will be our protection throughout it.

We can get up each morning calm and confident because His Presence and His Help will be with us at all hours.

Enjoy this day fully.  You are neither alone nor forsaken. Although you may not realize it, your day and your future are in the best hands; in God’s hands.
(Taken from the Network of Liturgy of the CLAI)

Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to the light of a new day with the firm conviction that, as your Word says:  You will help us at the break of day.  Thank you, Lord, amen.

DIOS TE AYUDARÁ AL CLAREAR  LA MAÑANA

SALMO 46
Salmo 46:5

Yo no sé cómo será hoy mi día.

Wednesday, December 17 THANK YOU FOR THE WATER JOHN 4:1-15

Wednesday, December 17
THANK YOU FOR THE WATER

JOHn 4:1-15
“Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.’”
John 4:10

A short while ago, as our family sat down to eat, we asked our little daughter to give thanks for the food. To our great surprise, the little one thanked God for the water we were about to drink.  And it is true that we are often unaware of the blessing that it is to have water to drink, and we often only declare our gratitude for food.

Ever since this profound prayer was made by our daughter we remark among ourselves that giving thanks to God for our water is another way of confirming our commitment to his care over us.  Systems of water purification have been installed in many of our Presbyterian churches, benefitting thousands of people in our communities.  This is one specific way of giving thanks to God for our drinking water, by giving it to the people in good quality.  Now when we save each drop of this precious liquid, when we remember that it is not a renewable resource and that many people around the world need it and that is why we do not waste it… we are grateful to God with specific gestures.

Jesus is our living water and this is not an abstract concept.  Jesus is present in the inexhaustible thirst of each person in the world.

Present: God, you who are living water, allow us to grow in our commitment with the waters that you have created. Grant that during this Advent we may deepen our relationship with you, in order to also become living water for the world. Amen.

Gracias por el agua

Juan 4:1-15

Tuesday, December 16 BACKSTAGE AND BEHIND THE SCENES MARK 1:1-10

Tuesday, December 16
BACKSTAGE AND BEHIND THE SCENES
MarK 1:1-10
“After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.”
Mark 1:7

It is very difficult to imagine a prominent figure these days who is capable of giving up his place of privilege to a colleague simply by acknowledging that he is more important or better able to fulfill his mission. Instead, we have established a way of understanding power and relationships in our world today that implies advancing oneself even while acknowledging one’s own limitations.

In the case of John the Baptist we have a true example of humility.  With regard to his prophetic relationship with Jesus, he himself said: “He must grow and I must diminish.”

What a great privilege we would have if we were followers of this statement of John the Baptist.  Our tendency, however, is to try to do everything in order to conquer, not just to gain appreciation and acknowledgment, but also devotion and privileges.

Let us be guided by John’s example, remaining on occasion “backstage and behind the scenes” and giving up our place when it is necessary and right. Let us open the way for those who carry the good news of peace, love, and righteousness.

Prayer: Lord, help us to value the place we occupy and to be able to give way when it is right. Amen.

Tras bambalinas
Marcos 1:1-10

Monday, December 15 BROKEN VESSELS JEREMIAH 18:1-10

Monday, December 15
BROKEN VESSELS
JEREMIAH 18:1-10
“…so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.”
Jeremiah 18:4
In one way or another, from the time we are born, we are all broken vessels.  The Glory of the image and likeness of God slips away through the cracks of our sinful humanity and nothing can be done to salvage the poor clay flowerpot.

Is it possible that an omnipotent, omniscient, sovereign God could dwell within a finite, small, limited human being?  How could so much glory fit within such a tiny vessel?

Only Christ, the perfect vessel, was able to treasure it without having it lose a single sparkle, and without causing the vessel, which was just as fragile and made of the same human flesh as mine, to break into a thousand shards.

Because of that, a vessel of honor has been reserved for me.  A near but eternal future where divinity and humanity live together, forming a single perfect being; an exact reflection, an untarnished mirror, a faithful image similar to that of Christ.

The day has already dawned when my vessel, my poor broken human vessel, its cracks sealed, will be filled and dressed anew with the Glory of the Father; made into a perfect vessel at the Lord’s feet.

Prayer: God, our artisan, we thank you for a love that is capable of creating and re-creating our lives. Instead of looking at our cracks, each day you perfect your work within us.  Thank you that in Jesus you offered us the perfect mold.  Amen.

VASIJAS AGRIETADAS
