BACKSTAGE AND BEHIND THE SCENES

MarK 1:1-10

“After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.”

Mark 1:7

It is very difficult to imagine a prominent figure these days who is capable of giving up his place of privilege to a colleague simply by acknowledging that he is more important or better able to fulfill his mission. Instead, we have established a way of understanding power and relationships in our world today that implies advancing oneself even while acknowledging one’s own limitations.

In the case of John the Baptist we have a true example of humility.  With regard to his prophetic relationship with Jesus, he himself said: “He must grow and I must diminish.”

What a great privilege we would have if we were followers of this statement of John the Baptist.  Our tendency, however, is to try to do everything in order to conquer, not just to gain appreciation and acknowledgment, but also devotion and privileges.

Let us be guided by John’s example, remaining on occasion “backstage and behind the scenes” and giving up our place when it is necessary and right. Let us open the way for those who carry the good news of peace, love, and righteousness.

Prayer: Lord, help us to value the place we occupy and to be able to give way when it is right. Amen.

Tras bambalinas

Marcos 1:1-10

“Viene tras mí el qu es más poderoso que yo, a quien no soy digno de desatar, agachado, la correa de su calzado”

Marcos 1:7

Es muy difícil imaginar que una figura prominente en nuestros días sea capaz de ceder su lugar de privilegio a un colega solo por reconocer que es este más importante o apto para desempeñarlo. Más bien en el mundo contemporáneo se ha establecido una manera de comprender el poder y las relaciones, que implica siempre avanzar aunque se reconozcan las limitaciones propias.

En el caso de Juan el Bautista podemos tomarlo como un verdadero ejemplo de humildad. Él mismo dijo acerca de su relación profética con Jesús: “Es necesario que él crezca y yo mengüe”.

Que gran privilegio tendríamos si fuéramos seguidores de esta frase de Juan el Bautista. Sin embargo, nuestra tendencia es a tratar de hacerlo todo para conquistar, no sólo el aprecio y el reconocimiento, sino también la devoción y los privilegios.

Dejémonos guiar por el ejemplo de Juan, quedémonos en ocasiones “tras bambalinas” y cedamos el lugar cuando sea necesario y justo. Abramos el camino de quienes llevan buenas nuevas de paz, amor y justicia. 

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a valorar el lugar que ocupamos, y ser capaces de cederlo cuando sea justo. Amén.
