GOD IS NEAR

Psalm 102

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted

And saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Reading this psalm is startling. The human being is pouring out his soul before God in the midst of tremendous suffering and pleading for a response.  The images spill over, each one more expressive, as if wanting to exhaust every means of describing an indescribable evil.

It is the affliction of humanity that visualizes the evils of his people:  those which without a doubt affect him personally, whose horizon seems to be in complete darkness and apparently closed, without the slightest bit of light to promise the vision of a new dawn.

And yet, the complaint flows into a sort of vision of what God has promised and of what He is doing.  The psalmist recalls that among the memorable works of the eternal God, there is the restoration of Zion, and it is then that he can make out the glory of God, which will also be seen by the people, who will sing praises to him.

In our day and age there are also persons and peoples who dwell in the dark night of the soul, who like the psalmist say: “When I call, answer me quickly.” And the Lord responds, He always responds.  We are not alone in the midst of our difficulties, of our personal or communal struggles.

God is not a distant God.  He looks upon the earth, hears our cries of pain and frees those who are suffering and who are feeling hopeless.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for always being there, very close to me.

DIOS ESTA CERCA

Salmo 102

“Cercano está el Señor para salvar

a los que tienen roto el corazón y el espíritu.”

Salmo 34:18

La lectura de este salmo sobrecoge. Ahí está el ser humano derramando su alma delante de Dios, en medio de un tremendo sufrimiento y urgiendo la respuesta. Las imágenes cabalgan, a cuál de ellas más expresiva que las otras, como queriendo agotar todos los medios de describir un mal indescriptible

Es la aflicción del ser humano que visualiza los males de su pueblo, los que sin lugar a dudas lo afectan personalmente, cuyo horizonte aparece en una completa oscuridad y aparentemente cerrado, sin poder vislumbrar un ápice  de luz que prometa la visión de una nueva aurora.

Sin embargo, la queja desemboca en una especie de visión de lo que Dios ha prometido y de lo que está haciendo. El salmista recuerda que entre las obras memorables del Dios eterno, está la restauración futura de Sión, y es entonces que puede vislumbrar la gloria de Dios, la que se dejará ver también en los pueblos, quienes le cantaran y le alabaran.

En nuestros días hay también personas y pueblos que viven en la noche oscura del alma, que al igual que el salmista dicen: “Apresúrate Señor a responderme”. Y el Señor responde, Él responde siempre. No estamos solos en medio de nuestras dificultades, de nuestras luchas personales o comunitarias.

Dios no es un Dios lejano. Él mira a la tierra, escucha los lamentos y libera a los que sufren y se sienten sin esperanza.

Oración: Gracias Señor, porque estás ahí, muy cerca de mí.

PRAYER IS NECESSARY

Jeremiah 29:11-13

“Evening, morning and noon

I cry out in distress,

And he hears my voice.”

Psalm 55:17

“Saying a prayer” is a phrase that is at times used in an ironic manner in order to disguise a superstition. Prayer can also be the magic formula for those desiring success in a project or for a wish to be granted. Since they are aware of their incapacity to resolve problems, they use prayer as a last resort.  But that is not prayer.

Christian prayer is not an ensemble of learned and repeated phrases and words such as a litany.  Rather, it is an intimate and trusting conversation with God.  It expresses our total dependence with respect to a Person we know, such as when a child relates to his father.

Acknowledging God as a Father is an act of salvation.  God, out of love, wanted to save us.  Our first motive for prayer, therefore, should be to give thanks to Him.  We can receive and welcome God at every moment through prayer. None of our problems is too great or too small for Him.  Prayer should feel like a daily necessity to us.

Prayer: I lift up my prayer to you today, Lord, trusting that you always hear me.

“Hacer una oración”, es una frase que a veces se usa de una forma irónica para hablar sobre alguna superstición. La oración también puede ser la fórmula mágica para quienes desean que un proyecto les salga bien o que un deseo se cumpla. Como son conscientes de su incapacidad para resolver los problemas, evocan la oración como un último recurso. Pero eso no es orar.

La oración cristiana no es un conjunto de frases y palabras aprendidas y repetidas como una letanía, sino es una íntima y confiada conversación con Dios. Expresa nuestra total dependencia con respecto a una Persona a la que conocemos, como ocurre cuando un niño se relaciona con su padre.

Reconocer a Dios como un Padre es un acto de salvación. Dios, por amor, quiso salvarnos. Nuestra primera intención al orar, pues, debe ser darle gracias. A Dios podemos acudir en oración en todo momento. Ninguno de nuestros problemas es demasiado grande o demasiado pequeño para Él. Cada día debemos sentir la oración como una necesidad.

Oración: Elevo a ti mi oración hoy, Señor, confiando en que siempre me escuchas.

Numbers 14:27

The Israelites rebelled against God. They grumbled against Moses and Aaron.  “If only we had died in Egypt or in this desert!” they said one to another, “Why is the Lord bringing us to this land?”

In the long journey through the desert toward the Promised Land, Israel had had profound experiences, and had discovered truths that seemed impossible to forget.  The people learned of the existence of a God who was with them in order to guide them and free them from danger; but Israel was also conscious of its sin and hardness of heart. Throughout the pilgrimage through the desert, there was frequent discontent and grumbling. In spite of their past experiences, they doubted God’s presence.

The experience of the Israelites can be seen today as well among ourselves.  We seek the new, we want change; but changes are hard, costly, and do not come about in one day or even in one year.  And because they are costly, many of us become discouraged.  We lose hope and begin to grumble and to complain with great pessimism.  Then comes doubt and we begin to doubt even God Himself.

Let us not remain in a state of annoying grumbling. If we feel that our faith is weakening today, let us say to God: “Lord, increase our faith.”

Prayer: Free me from the bad habit of complaining and grumbling about everything and everyone.  Teach me to trust in your power, even in the midst of trials.

MURMURANDO

Números 14:20-30

“¿Hasta cuándo oiré las murmuraciones de

esta depravada multitud contra mí?”

Números 17:27

Los israelitas se rebelan contra Dios. Hablan mal de Moisés y Aarón. “Ojalá hubiéramos muerto en Egipto o aquí en el desierto”, se decían unos a otros,  “¿Para qué nos trajo el Señor a este país?”

En la larga travesía por el desierto hacia la tierra prometida, Israel ha tenido experiencias profundas, y ha descubierto verdades que parecían imposible olvidar. Supo de la existencia de un Dios que estaba con él para guiarlo y librarlo de los peligros; pero Israel también era consciente de su pecado y dureza de corazón. Durante la peregrinación por el desierto, era frecuente el descontento y la murmuración. A pesar de las experiencias vividas en el pasado, dudaban de la presencia de Dios.

La experiencia del pueblo de Israel se repite también hoy entre nosotros. Buscamos lo nuevo, queremos el cambio; pero los cambios son duros, cuestan, esto no es tarea de un solo día ni de un año. Y porque cuestan muchos nos desanimamos, perdemos la esperanza y empezamos a murmurar y a quejarnos con gran pesimismo. Entonces viene la duda y dudamos hasta del mismo Dios.

No nos quedemos en la murmuración fastidiosa. Si hoy sentimos que nuestra fe es débil digámosle a Dios: “Señor, auméntanos la fe”.

Oración: Líbrame del mal hábito de quejarme y murmurar de todo y de todos. Enséñame a confiar en tu poder, aun en medio de la prueba.

WHY ME?

Psalm 62:1-2, 5-7

“In repentance and rest is your salvation,

in quietness and trust is your strength,

but you would have none of it.”

Isaiah 30:15

You feel overwhelmed by a problem, you are beset with illness or discouraged by failure; you often ask yourself: “Why me?” Good friends have perhaps tried to encourage and comfort you, but their words have not diminished your pain.  Once they have gone, you are left alone with your pain.

You wish to find a godly solution to your problems, but God may give you a very different response from the one you expected, and yet his response will be the right one.  

If your suffering is the consequence of an error, He will draw near to you as He did on another occasion with Jacob.  By confessing a fault you have already found peace.

God often allows a trial not as a result of an error, but in order to teach us a spiritual lesson.  Therefore, remain attentive to what happens in your life, and rest in Him who loves you with an inalterable love.

How often do you sigh in search of the reason behind your difficulties and your pain!  Trust in God!  He makes all things work for the good of those who love him.  

Prayer: Thank you, beloved God, for the eternal assuredness that you are my refuge and comfort.

Estás agobiada por un problema, andas detenida por la enfermedad o desanimada por un fracaso; te preguntas a menudo: “¿Por qué a mí?” Tal vez buenos amigos han tratado de animarte y consolarte, pero sus palabras no han disminuido tu dolor. Cuando se van te dejan sola con tu dolor.

Quieres encontrar una solución divina a tus problemas, pero Dios tal vez puede darte una repuesta muy diferente de la que tú esperas, sin embargo su respuesta será la buena respuesta.

Si tu sufrimiento es la consecuencia de un error, Él se acercará a ti como lo hizo en otro tiempo con Jacob. Confesarle una falta ya es hallar la paz

A menudo Dios permite la prueba no como consecuencia de una falta, sino para darnos una enseñanza espiritual. Por lo tanto, permanece atenta a lo que sucede en tu vida, y descansa en Aquel que te ama con un amor inalterable.

¡Cuántas veces suspiras buscando el porqué de tus dificultades, la razón de tu dolor! ¡Confía en Dios! Él hace que todas las cosas ayuden para el bien de los que le aman.

Oración: Gracias Dios amado, por la seguridad eterna de que tú eres mi refugio y consuelo.

TRANSFORMED LIVES

Titus 3:3-6

“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.”

Psalm 30:11

Did you know that Michelangelo’s famous statue of “David” was initially only a block of marble that had been ruined by another sculptor?  Leonardo de Vinci had declared that nothing could be done with that block, but Michelangelo made the magnificent statue from it, measuring more than four meters in height, that is found in Florence.

This makes us think about the story of our own lives. You may be aware that your life has been ruined by bad occurrences, but all is not lost, there is a remedy:  go to Jesus, who can transform your life, at times made ugly through sin, rancor, bitterness, deceit, in short, by everything that condemns us.

You may ask: “How can Jesus change my life if I have tried so many times to improve it, without success?”

 Jesus does not improve our natures, but rather gives us a new life when we go to Him with faith and trust.  We then have new purposes, new desires, and a new strength to do good through the power of his Spirit, and this turns us into new beings.

Therefore, like the “David” through which Michelangelo reveals the talent of a sculptor, your transformed life can be a testimony to the power of God’s love.

Prayer: Change me, Lord, and use my life to transform the lives of others.

VIDAS TRANSFORMADAS

“Tú cambias mis lágrimas en danza;

me quitas la tristeza y me rodeas de alegría”

¿Sabías que inicialmente la célebre estatua del “David” de Miguel Ángel sólo era un bloque de mármol que había sido estropeado por otro escultor? Leonado de Vinci había declarado que ya no se podía hacer nada con ese bloque, pero Miguel Ángel hizo con él la magnífica estatua de más de cuatro metros de altura, que se encuentra en Florencia.

Esto nos hace pensar en la historia de nuestras vidas. Quizás tú seas consciente de que tu vida ha sido estropeada por el mal, pero no todo está perdido, hay un remedio: ve a Jesús, quien puede transformar tu vida, a veces afeada por el pecado, el rencor, la amargura, la mentira, en fin, por todo lo que nos condena.

Tal vez te preguntes: “¿Cómo puede Jesús cambiar mi vida si muchas veces he intentado mejorarla, pero sin resultado?”

Jesús no mejora nuestra naturaleza, sino que nos da una nueva vida cuando vamos a Él con fe y confianza. Entonces tenemos nuevos motivos, nuevos deseos y una nueva fuerza para hacer el bien mediante el poder de su Espíritu, y esto nos convierte en nuevos seres.

Así, al igual que el “David” de Miguel Ángel revela el talento del escultor, tu vida transformada podrá ser un testimonio del poder del amor de Dios.

Oración: Cámbiame Señor, y usa mi vida para transformar las vidas de otras personas.

World Communion Sunday

GET READY!  IT’S TIME TO GO

Exodus 34:1-10

“Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.”

Ephesians 5:23

The celebration of world communion is in principle an expression of faith in the sense that each one of our churches is affirming a central content of faith through its participation: we are one body in Christ dispersed throughout the world.

The church is One because there is one faith, there is one hope and there is one practice of the love to which we are called.  We are part of the same plan of God.

God prepares a feast for us. But as the word well says, many guests are invited to his Feast, the feast of the Kingdom, but not everyone chooses to attend.

                                                                                                                                                           

The difference between those who will attend and those who will not, between some and others, is exclusively determined by divine justice. It is not up to us.

But it is certain that He expects us at his Feast and wants for us to present ourselves prepared before Him, because God wants to give us the blessing of his presence in our lives and we cannot be unprepared for that moment.

Prayer: Bread of life, always give to us this spiritual food which assures us of eternal life.  

Domingo de Comunión Mundial

¡PREPÁRATE! Y VAMOS YA

Éxodo 34:1-10

“Cristo es cabeza de la iglesia, la cual es su cuerpo,

y él es su Salvador”

Efesios 5:23

Celebrar un día de comunión mundial es en principio una expresión de fe en el sentido que cada una de nuestras iglesias al celebrar la comunión están afirmando un contenido central de la fe: somos un solo cuerpo en Cristo disperso por el mundo.

La iglesia es Una porque una es  la fe, una la esperanza y una la práctica del amor a la que somos desafiados. Somos parte del mismo proyecto de Dios.

Dios hace fiesta para todos. Pero como bien dice la palabra muchos son los invitados a su Fiesta, la fiesta del Reino, pero no todos participarán.

La distinción entre los que estarán y los que no estarán, entre unos y otros, es de competencia exclusiva de la justicia divina, no nos toca hacerla a nosotros.

Pero cierto es que Él nos espera en su fiesta y desea que nos presentemos ante Él preparados, porque Dios quiere regalarnos la bendición de su presencia en nuestra vida y no podemos estar desprovistos para ese momento.

Oración: Pan de vida, danos siempre ese alimento espiritual que nos asegura la vida eterna.

THE DIVINE COMMAND

Acts 17:30-31

“Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”

Matthew 3:8

During the Second World War, one Sunday, at the end of lunch, in a small French city that had not been bombed up to that time, a father heard the sirens and said to his children at the table: “Children, the sirens have gone off, let’s go down to the garden.”

A few minutes later the house was bombed and nothing was left of it.  Everyone had immediately obeyed the father’s command and all were thus able to save themselves in the shelter of their garden. 

In the same way, God, who loves us, commands us to repent.  Repentance indicates a change of mind, idea or thought, which leads to a change of life or attitude.

Many times a human being refuses to change his life, especially if the change implies that one has to give up something that one loves.  In order to change we have to acknowledge that we are wrong and that we need to change our mindset, and at times our pride will not allow us to do so.

In order to repent, we must first acknowledge that we are sinners. We are all sinners, which is why we all need to repent.

Repentance is a visit from God, a calling from God, a sign that God loves us. We need God’s strength in order to discover all that is within us that is not of God. And don’t forget that when a sinner repents, there is joyfulness in heaven.

Prayer: Lord, I depend on your help in order to walk the pathway of sincere repentance.

LA ORDEN DIVINA

Hechos 17:30-31

“Produzcan frutos dignos de arrepentimiento”

Mateo 3:8

Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, un domingo, al final del almuerzo, en una pequeña ciudad francesa que hasta ese momento no había sido bombardeada, un padre de familia oyó la sirena de alerta y dijo a sus hijos que estaban en la mesa: —“Hijos, sonó la sirena, bajemos al jardín”

Algunos minutos después la casa fue bombardeada y no quedó nada de ella. Todos habían obedecido inmediatamente la orden del padre y así pudieron salvarse gracias al refugio que tenían en el jardín.

Del mismo modo, Dios, quien nos ama, nos manda a que nos arrepintamos. Arrepentimiento denota cambio de mente, idea o pensamiento, que lleva a un cambio de vida o actitud.

Muchas veces el ser humano rehúsa cambiar su vida, especialmente si el cambio implica que tiene que dejar algo que le gusta. Para cambiar es necesario reconocer que estamos equivocados y que necesitamos cambiar nuestra mente, y a veces el orgullo no nos deja.

Arrepentirse, es primeramente reconocer que somos pecadores. Todos somos pecadores, por lo tanto todos debemos arrepentirnos.

El arrepentimiento es una visita de Dios, una llamada de Dios, una señal de que Dios nos quiere. Necesitamos la fuerza de Dios para descubrir todo lo que hay en nosotros que no es de Dios. Y no olvides que cuando un pecador se arrepiente hay gozo en el cielo.

Oración: Señor, cuento con tu ayuda para hacer un camino de arrepentimiento sincero.
