May 7, Saturday
IN DESPAIR?
JOB 7
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace
as you trust in him ”

Romans 15:13
In our church of La Habana, now more than twenty years ago, hotline called the “Friend Telephone” was begun as an option for people in crisis, or in despair, so that they have a means to talk about their problems. The telephone is manned by psychologists who listen and speak to them, helping them in their agony.  Many of them call with only one thought on their minds: suicide. Unfortunately, and for diverse reasons, suicide has become a prominent cause of death among young people worldwide.

It would be fitting to ask oneself then: Why do thousands of young people feel this malaise?

Some of them say, “I’m disappointed with life,” or “I have no future,” or “I’m sick and tired of it all.” Sister, brother, if you are sunken in such a great hopelessness, I want to tell you that there’s someone who understands you and can help you escape from that miserable state. God knows and loves you. He gave you life so that you could know him and receive eternal life through faith in Jesus. While you live and have consciousness, you have the opportunity to return to God.

Prayer:  Today, Lord, I want to pray for so many people who find themselves truly hopeless, in a state of agony. Accompany them and show them your love through us your children.  Amen.

¿DESESPERADO?
JOB 7

May 6, Friday HE IS THE WAY ISAIAH 45:20

May 6, Friday
HE IS THE WAY
ISAIAH 45:20
“Cursed in anyone who makes an idol – a thing detestable to the Lord,
the work of skilled hands – and sets it up in secret. ”

Deuteronomy 27:15

A story is told that, upon collecting the belongings of a soldier who had died in World War II, with the object of bringing them to his family, in the interior part of his jacket, well hidden in the lining, was a medal on which the following words were inscribed:  “As long as you have me with you, nothing bad will happen to you.”

In today’s reality, many people trust their security to horoscopes, amulets, and systems of divination. (Our “medals” would perhaps have another name, for example: “good works.”) Some rely on them to guarantee their salvation, but Jesus tells us that He is the way. Only through Him will we come to abundant life.

Sisters and brothers, on occasion we need some “certainties” in order to believe. We need something concrete that we can touch, but God asks that we believe in Him in the midst of our doubts and uncertainties. The best “medal” we can carry amid our insecurities is the loving look of God returning to us the comfort and the strength to keep moving forward.

Prayer:  Lord, you are the true way; help us to trust and to feel your presence, so that we may not be in need of anything that doesn’t come from you. Amen.

May 5, Thursday
Anniversary of the IPR “Getsemaní” (San José de los Ramos)

THE SCHOOL OF GOD
 COLOSSIANS 1:1-7

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
Psalm 32:8

The believer enters the School of God the moment after he accepts Jesus as his Savior, and remains there until the end of his education, that is, until the end of his terrestrial life. In that school the professor is Jesus Christ himself. He is the Teacher of all men and women. He adapts to the rhythm of each one. A relationship of trust develops between the student and the teacher, which becomes the motivation for progress.

The school’s textbook is the Bible. Through it we discover what God thinks of human beings, what is his interest in them, what he has done and what he wants to do for them. It’s necessary to read it. There are practical exercises as well, that is, all the daily situations in which we put into practice what we have learned. God doesn’t so much want minds stuffed with doctrines, rather lives that put into practice what they’ve learned.
At times there are concrete exams that mark the Christian’s progress. The Lord wants us to go through them with Him so that afterwards we are stronger. At the end, in heaven, the awarding of prizes will take place. No one will be forgotten. The best prize winners won’t be those who know everything, rather those who have utilized the capacities God gave them to walk in a worthy way with the Lord.

Prayer:  Loving Teacher, accompany us in this school, let us achieve the best grades, those worthy of you. Amen.

LA ESCUELA DE DIOS
 COLOSENSES 1:1-7

“Te enseñaré el camino en que debes andar;
sobre ti fijaré mis ojos”
Salmo 32:8

LIFE, A RISKY NAVIGATION
PROVERBS 1:29-33

“… but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
Proverbs 1:33

Navigation was very dangerous before the great sixteenth century navigators created the first maritime maps. Considerably perfected since then, and thanks to them, ships up until recently had to orient themselves on the oceans without any points of reference. Lighthouses, buoys, and such also serve as navigational signals. Respecting confers great security upon the navigator.

The Book of Proverbs is full of warnings and advice to guide our lives well. It spans numerous subjects, such as work, laziness, money, sexuality, time management and the manner of speaking, etc.

We can compare our lives precisely to a voyage on the seas. To travel on the ocean of life is an operation with risk. What are the reference points for success in life amid so many risks?

A Christian wrote, “The Bible is a navigational map created by God himself. From beginning to end it collects indicators that show the reefs and shoals upon which thousands of human beings have shipwrecked in their crossing the ocean of life.”

Prayer:  Lord, today we ask that you accompany us in navigating the ocean of life, with the surety that in your presence we will reach port safely. Amen.

LA VIDA, UNA NAVEGACIÓN CON RIESGO
PROVERBIOS  1:29-33

“… mas el que me oyere, habitará confiadamente
y vivirá tranquilo, sin temor al mal”
Proverbios 1:33

May 3, Tuesday X-RAYS HEBREWS 4:12-13

May 3, Tuesday
X-RAYS
HEBREWS 4:12-13

“...Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;
everything is uncovered and laid bare
before the eyes of him to whom we must give account”
Hebrews 4:13

In 1895 the physicist Wilhelm Rontgen discovered a new type of ray, the so-called x-rays. These can pass through the body and reveal what is inside. Since then new methods have been created such as the scanner, ultra-sound, and magnetic resonance.

This “transparency of the body” determines the presence of certain illnesses, so that later they can be efficiently cured. Nevertheless, discerning our thoughts, motivations, and desires
continues to be impossible for science.

How many pretexts and evil thoughts are there in us without anyone knowing?! No one except God can know. He knows, including all that of which we are not ourselves conscious. Does he reject us, seeing so many bad tendencies, anger, bitterness, deception and even hate? No. God wants to heal us of all these things.
When we sincerely read the Bible, divine light passes through us, such as it does to our body when we submit it to radiography. It reveals to us what we try to hide from others and perhaps from ourselves as well. It leads us to repent and to a desire to change our lives to be in accord with what God says. But unlike the x-rays which destroy our cells, the light of God’s Word gives life.

Prayer:  Our good God, we ask of you today that you illuminate us with your light; that we may know to listen to you, see you and love you. That we may always seek you, knowing that we will certainly find you. Amen.

LOS RAYOS X
HEBREOS 4:12-13

May 2, Monday ARE YOU DISCOURAGED? PSALM 5

May 2, Monday
ARE YOU DISCOURAGED?
PSALM 5

“Cast all your anxiety upon him,
because he cares for you.”
I Peter 5:7

David, dispirited after having escaped Saul who was trying to kill him, collaborated with the Philistines, the enemy of his people, and thus had no alternative other than to go to war against his own country.

Thanks be to God that the Philistine leaders, fearing David would turn on them during combat, ordered him to depart with his soldiers. But when he returned to his city, David found himself in an exasperating situation: everything had been burned.  The women, children, and all of the goods had disappeared. Its men and valiant warriors were in tears and held him accountable for the catastrophe, and decided to stone him to death.

David felt alone and guilty: Pursued by Saul, rejected by the Philistines, threatened by his own soldiers and deprived of family and wherewithal. How was this man of faith to react?  His stance was magnificent.  The Word first states that “he strengthened himself in the Lord his God,” and later humbly asked God what he should do, and God gave him a marvelous solution.

What an example for every believer! If discouragement invades us, accentuated by the consciousness of our errors, and if loneliness oppresses us, God’s grace is always within our reach. Let us go to Him. He listens to us, helps and strengthens us. We can confess even our greatest sins; they don’t impede our going to prayer. He responds even to the most difficult situations. He will do all this, perhaps not as we envision; but yes, with wisdom and love.

Prayer:  Thank you Lord Jesus for your words. Thank you, because in them we always find the answers to our needs. Amen.

¿ESTÁS DESANIMADO?
SALMO 5

Vayamos a Él.

May 1, Sunday THE LIES WE TELL MATTHEW 9:4

May 1, Sunday
THE LIES WE TELL
MATTHEW 9:4

“Lord, you know everyone’s heart.”
Acts 1:24a

At a comedy show I recently attended I heard the actor say that human beings received the faculty of speech in order to disguise their thoughts, and so it is.
The act of hiding the truth is a universal principle, without which the human being in his state of sin would find it nearly inconceivable to live in society.
On one hand we have the criminal’s lie who insists in denying his acts, even under overwhelming evidence. On the other hand there is the embellished diplomatic art, at once trumpeting and then backsliding. Similarly, we see the tricks of those who have an elastic conscience; and there also exists what we call merciful lies which, for example, hide the true nature of a sick person’s condition from them.
And what can be said of the faculty with which we strain to hide our own moral condition from ourselves? We always find good excuses for our errors!
God reads our thoughts as though they were written in an open book. What we succeed in hiding from others cannot be hidden from God. He asks us to let his light penetrate and reveal who we truly are. In any and all circumstances, be truthful and honest.

Prayer:  Lord, may we permit your light to penetrate, even to the deepest reaches of our being, illuminating our misguided thoughts. Amen.

LAS MENTIRAS
MATEO 9:4

“Y orando, dijeron:
