May 14, Saturday AN EXAMPLE WORTHY OF IMITATING PROVERBS 16:31

May 14, Saturday
AN EXAMPLE WORTHY OF IMITATING
PROVERBS 16:31
“Grey hair is the crown of splendor;
it is attained in the way of righteousness.”
Proverbs 16:31

I confess that one of the letters that’s made me reflect a good deal is that which Ho Chi Min wrote to the elderly Vietnamese in 1945:

“Gentlemen, I am writing to you now as an old man myself. The proverb says that when old age comes, talent runs out. This is, at times, what the elderly of our country think. If there is a job to be done, we hear them saying: ‘When one arrives at old age one needs to be peaceful. With every day that passes the years weigh upon us. Ambition is a thing of the past. We leave life’s problems to the youth. We already have one foot in the grave. Why work?’

I don’t share that opinion. The true patriots have never been seen to resign themselves to inaction because of age. Every one of us, young or old, should shoulder a bit of the burden. The youth will carry the heaviest part; we, whom age has impeded from doing as much, will go at the head of the column, baton in hand, to encourage them and transmit experience. Our age imposes the obligation of being the first in uniting sincerely with the aim of setting an example…”

I think it’s a challenge for us, the elderly, who have had more years in the tasks of the Presbyterian Church in our country, to channel our footsteps, to be an example to the generations of youth we are training. We should all unite, regardless of our age, with the immense desire to serve, love, build, and be useful. Age is unimportant; there will always be a place for each of us. Having grey hair obligates us to serve our church in Cuba more forcefully.

Prayer:  Lord, help us to understand that age is irrelevant if one tries to work together for your church, doing our best. Amen.

UN EJEMPLO DIGNO DE IMITAR
PROVERBIOS 16:31
“Corona de honra es la vejez”
Proverbios 16:31

No comparto esa opinión.

May 13, Friday AN INEXHAUSTIBLE SOURCE OF STRENGTH PSALM 94

May 13, Friday
AN INEXHAUSTIBLE SOURCE OF STRENGTH
PSALM 94

“...your unfailing love, Lord, supports me.”
Psalm 94:18

We often find ourselves suffering a kind of anguish, an uneasiness we attribute to the exhaustion of our daily struggle, at work, in the conflicts of interpersonal relations with those around us, or whatever other thing implies effort or involves danger. But, why are we seized by that worry? It’s due to the fact that we lack interior forces to confront the exterior battering.

If we trust in God, if we dedicated more time to prayer, we would find an inexhaustible source of strength, provided by His presence which enriches and sustains us, giving us strength in all our difficulties, however great they may be. Many people live in hopelessness, taking tranquilizers for their nerves or going to psychiatrists, who in the end cannot resolve their issues because it’s something deeper: the absence or weakness of faith.

Turn your eyes to the Lord. He will give you the strength you need to survive and He will give you the inner peace that only He and no one else can provide.

Prayer:  Gracious God, I ask that when my spirit finds itself anguished or depressed, when hopelessness seizes my heart, You may come and give me the strength I need., Amen.

FUENTE INAGOTABLE DE FORTALEZA
SALMO 94

“...tu misericordia, oh Jehová, me sustentaba”
Salmo 94:18

May 12, Thursday WHAT IS LIFE MADE OF? LUKE 12:22-31

May 12, Thursday
WHAT IS LIFE MADE OF?
LUKE 12:22-31

“But seek his kingdom,
and these things will be given to you as well.”
Luke 12:31
We all have, in one way or another, felt the temptation of having many material belongings, a great fortune. Greed is a seemingly chronic evil in the human beings of this century. More than one person has died because of material wealth; and many families have been forever divided after the reading of a deceased person’s will. The reality of many people in this world is reflected in the parable we have just read. The ambition for power and the amassing of riches has been the desire of the majority of men across the centuries.

Apart from what we flaunt, our lives are seemingly worthless. Our real lives are stored up and hidden, there where the human eye cannot penetrate, there where only our own spirit lives and where one can only enter with the sovereign Spirit of God.

I think we should close by asking ourselves the same question we did at the beginning: What is life made of?  Without doubt the answer will be: In pleasing God, serving him every day.

Prayer:  Lord, we want to serve you, expecting nothing in return. Let us first seek your kingdom, with the certainty that everything will then be added. Amen.

¿EN QUE CONSISTE LA VIDA?
LUCAS 12:22-31

May 11, Wednesday A CURIOUS MYOPIA PSALM 39:5-6

May 11, Wednesday
A CURIOUS MYOPIA
PSALM 39:5-6

“Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom…”
Psalm 39:6

I once had the opportunity to read the testimony of a doctor who was diagnosed with cancer. It went like this:

“When a patient is informed he has cancer, his first reaction is disbelief. The mind resists imagining the possibility of our own demise, as though death could only come for others. While we are not sick, life seems infinite, and we believe there will always be time to struggle for our own happiness. By always leaving the essential for tomorrow we run the risk that life is escaping from us without our really having enjoyed it. It’s precisely this curious myopia, these vacillations, which at times cancer comes to dispel. Life’s true meaning is achieved when we return it to its authentic fragility. Some months after receiving the diagnosis of brain cancer I had the strange feeling of having opaque lenses being lifted that had impeded my sight.”

And now I ask myself, “Is it necessary to have a grave illness to become conscious of what our life is?” Despite what some think, it shouldn’t be that way.

We should take a lesson from another’s experiences, for example, from this testimony. The Bible says that our lives, although fragile, are precious in God’s sight since he created us in his image and desires our well-being. He loves us. Let us not wait for trying times before going to him. Let’s pause today after reflecting and have an encounter with God to listen to him.

Prayer:  Lord, let us come to you every day. Allow us to draw near to you to ask for your protection. Amen.

UNA CURIOSA MIOPÍA
SALMO 39:5-6

“Ciertamente como una sombra es el hombre”
Salmo 39:6

Y entonces yo me pregunto.

May 10, Tuesday LEAVE THE SHADOWS PSALM 36:7-9

May 10, Tuesday
LEAVE THE SHADOWS
PSALM 36:7-9

“For you were once darkness,
but now you are light in the Lord.”

Ephesians 5:8

In front of the building where I live there’s a row of densely leafed trees whose height eliminates all light and visibility. One day my husband pruned a few branches. What a joy to see how the sunlight entered all the rooms of our house!

Perhaps we’ve lived a long time in semi-darkness. So now it is necessary to prune everything that has inhibited God’s light from penetrating the dark corners of our existence.

Once we have received that divine light, we should share it with other people. God wants his light to shine in our hearts. The Gospel is the true light Jesus brings, the good news of God’s grace. The Savior even calls all those who by faith accept to emerge from the darkness into the light.

Yes, by grace we have become sons and daughters of light. Let us try to constantly maintain a relationship with God without darkness. Let us bathe in his light, his life-word. Let’s allow it to penetrate our hearts and illuminate our context with that torrent of divine light.

Prayer:  Jesus, you are the light of the world, a light that cannot be hidden. Show us the way that brings us to your light. Enable us to offer clarity to the dark places of the world. In your name we pray. Amen.

SALIR DE LA OSCURIDAD
SALMO 36:7-9

“En otro tiempo erais tinieblas,
mas ahora sois luz en el Señor”

Efesios 5:8

May 9, Monday AN ANCHOR FOR THE SOUL HEBREWS 6:18-20

May 9, Monday
AN ANCHOR FOR THE SOUL
HEBREWS 6:18-20

“We have this hope
as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure”

Hebrews 6:18-19

When seamen lower the anchor, they do so with the objective of stabilizing the ship so that the wind and waves don’t blow it about. The anchor is tied to a chain which passes through the breaking waves and later disappears into the deep waters. We see neither the sea’s deeps nor the anchor, but we do see the effect, that is, the stability of the ship.

This image illustrates a very important spiritual truth. A true Christian is solidly anchored to Christ via his faith, which instead of being in the depths of the choppy waters of this world, is rooted in heaven.

In the sea’s depths, where the anchor rests, it remains hidden from the seaman’s eyes. But he certainly feels its effect. In the same way, we don’t see Jesus with our physical eyes, but we are clearly united to Him by faith. We know he is alive and answers our prayers.

Those who aren’t able to maintain their faith in Christ amid trials can perceive that we are united to Him because he is the anchor of our faith.

Prayer:  Thank you, my good God, for the security we have from being united with you. Our life cannot be torn asunder by any storm. Thank you because every day you anchor us to you, helping us to remain stable amidst life’s tempestuous waves. Amen.

UN ANCLA PARA  EL ALMA
HEBREOS 6:18-20

May 8, Sunday IN THE SHADE OF THE OMNIPOTENT PSALM 91

May 8, Sunday
IN THE SHADE OF THE OMNIPOTENT
PSALM 91

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most high
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Psalm 91:1

The other day I was watching my son play hide-and-seek with his friends. One of the smallest hid behind a wall, without suspecting that the sun would give him away by casting his shadow. Another of those who was playing said, referring to him, “Look, there’s his shadow; he can’t be far away.”

Today’s verse speaks to us of dwelling beneath the shadow of the Omnipotent, to evoke the believer’s strong proximity with his God, the protection and love with which God surrounds those who believe in Him. Believers can experience the reality of these words.

There’s a popular saying that goes: Good shade shelters him who draws near a good tree. Or, metaphorically, It’s not what you know, but whom you know. Here the shade refers to certain privileges a well-placed person can provide for us if we approach him; but God’s shade doesn’t grant privileges. Instead, it comforts us amid the crisis situations that we experience.

We live surrounded by dangers, some of which we are not always aware. Perhaps we feel overcome with anguish or assaulted by multiple fears. This Psalm tells us we need to live in communion with God, in a relation of trust and love. Thus, we will stay beneath his shade, very close to Him.

Prayer:  Help us, beloved God, to live daily beneath your protective shade, assured of the eternal love and protection it provides. Amen.

BAJO LA SOMBRA DEL OMNIPOTENTE
SALMO 91

“El que habita al abrigo del Altísimo,
morará bajo la sombre del Omnipotente”
Salmo 91:1
