Presbytery meetings. The Cry from Yara (Start of War for Independence 1868)

HE WHO CALLED US

Matthew 8:23-27

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit that will last, and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.  (NIV)

John 15:16

It’s happened to nearly all of us that, on some occasion, God says, “Advance somewhere,” and while fulfilling his will obstacles appear in the way that make us doubt. Suddenly we begin to question ourselves if it was really God who called us, and fear comes. Evidently our faith diminishes when beginning to doubt, and many times we end up abandoning the task to which we were called. Then we cry out, “Where is God?”

Let’s switch the question to this other: Where are you? Who placed you in the boat? Who told you “Come?” In all certainty I tell you that it was Jesus who called you, and it’s he who responds for you.

The winds only serve to entertain us, to distract. Let’s look to him with security and we can walk upon the waters. We shouldn’t worry, he is here to fortify us when we think we’ll sink.

Today, God tells us. “Leave your boat, your place of comfort, and give me your hand.”

Prayer: Thank you, our God, for allowing us one more day, because you fill us with goodness. I am certain that you are by our side to raise us should we fall. Thank you for giving me the chance of finding myself with you through prayer. Amen.

AQUEL QUE NOS  LLAMO

Mateo 8:23-27

No debemos temer.

CROSSING THE VALLEY

Psalm 18:1-6

In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.  (NIV)

Psalm 18:6

Sometimes, although my faith has not totally dissipated, I feel weakness, fear, pain and weariness. But I do not want to falter for the sake of attaining a good harvest.

The valley of darkness which I am passing through seems endless, but there is the Good Shepherd who helps me cross it. I have felt the inclination to leave, to run and fly far away, but He tells me “No.” Rather, I am to go forward since the harvest will be great.  Yet I am feeling apart, my saddened soul, experiencing the battering of a forceful storm, is crumbling like a sand castle battered by the sea. Where is my strength, my smile, my joy? I don’t want to lose them, but I am exhausted and fatigued. I pray, seeking the sweet refuge in the wounds of Christ. only He tells me that when I’m weakest I will be stronger in Him, In the midst of pain and discomfort his voice inspires me and gives me courage.

I know I can! I don’t know how many kilometers or meters remain in this valley, I only know that wherever He may find me, He is my strength.

Prayer: I have faith, Lord, because your plans for my life are always better than mine. Thank you for not letting me fall, for sustaining me in the middle of the valley. Amen.

ATRAVESANDO EL VALLE

Salmo 18:1-6

THANKS FOR THE TRIALS

1 Peter 4:12-16

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind, And God is faithful, he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so you can endure it.  (NIV)

1 Corinthians 10:13

Trials are causative situations of concern, where weariness becomes the cruel companion of an empty feeling of interminable routines in this life.

Lord, you come and blanket me in your peace when I am lost in darkness. Thank you for reminding me that pain always brings gain in my life. Since first knowing you and you received me in your breast as a son, you have told me this, and even more, you have shown me this. This pain is blessed; the desert is blessed because I learn to love your presence in my life, since no one else makes me feel that great satisfaction of joy. Suffering and tears have been the means of transforming me into a true daughter when I merited nothing.

I am one of those vile and scorned whom the Lord has raised, making of her a perfect work to walk in celestial places. Thank you for each sorrow, trial and despair of my being, since they have helped me to seek you when all else was barren.

Prayer: Thank you God, because although I do not know the future, I feel secure in that you always listen to me and care for me. Thank you for sustaining me amidst the trials. Amen,

GRACIAS POR LAS PRUEBAS

1 Pedro 4:12-16

LOSSES

Matthew 6: 25-32

But we do not want to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.

I Thessalonians  4:13(NRSV)

Several years ago in an important Psychology event, it came to light that what most affected the causes of stress in Cuba was what the authors called “the loss of the loved object.” Curious, right? One would think that other pressing things would cause stress in the population such as the daily problems of material shortages of various kinds.

Losing what you love becomes a source of stress. It may be a loved one, but it could also be something material. There are people who cling to their possessions and suffer terribly when some loss occurs to them. The truth is that as humans we get used to what we possess and losing those things generates a state of anxiety, of pain.

During our shortages or situations of loss, we need to rest in the trust of God who provides for us, who supplies our needs. In the saddest cases, when we lose a loved one who cannot be replaced, we must continue to have faith that death is not the end, but a new stage on the path that we are invited to walk with God.

Prayer: In these times, and in our anguish for the beings we love and who leave us, help us to remember that you, Lord, take care of us and that our lives belong to you.

PÉRDIDAS

Mateo 6: 25-32

I Tesalonicenses  4:13

YOU HAVE A FRIEND

Exodus 33:11-17

Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.

Exodus 33:11 (NRSV)

Courtesy is not a word we often use to describe God. This is perhaps because  our concept of courtesy is limited to the idea of being cordial. However, in New Testament Greek, the word courtesy comes from two words: one is friend; and the other is: to the mind. Being courteous is to think of someone as a friend, an attitude exemplified to us by  God.

When Moses was leading the Israelites in the desert, the Bible  tells us that Moses went to the meeting tent where God spoke to him face to face, as anyone would speak to a companion. Although we don’t meet with God face to face, we know that He wants to be our friend. Jesus also called his followers friends, for he embodied  God’s courtesy in all his relations.

You may feel distant from God or see him as a stern Father; Nevertheless, He wants to be your Friend and be an intimate part of your life.

Prayer: Thank you Lord, for the intimacy and friendship you offer me.  I ask you to help me understand and fully value what it means to have you as a Friend.

Amen.

TIENES UN AMIGO

Exodo 33:11-17

AFFLICTION IN TIMES OF STRESS

Psalm 121:1-8

My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:2 (NRSV)

Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning in my own stress; my feeling is wrapped in a whirlpool that traps and dilutes me in a fury of agony that makes me faint. I don’t understand how it came and how it settled on me without being prevented, but I feel like it hurts me and robs me of peace. It is difficult to say how I feel: full of uncertainty, my faith diminishes, I tear myself in the cry of desire, I want this to happen now,  but it is still there. Days go by, worries grow and my wailings  increase. I don’t stop praying.

This beautiful reflection fell into my hands some time ago. I would like to share it with you because it helps me feel better in these circumstances:

“There are days that we feel strong like Joshua and Caleb, ready for the war.

There are days that we’d prefer to hide in a cave like Elías.

There are days that we want to sing like David and Miriam

There are days we want to cry like Ana.

There are days we have faith like Abraham to win everything, and defeat armies. There are days when we lift our eyes to the hills and ask ourselves:

From where will my help come?

That’s not to say we are strong or weak. We are simply humans and limited, absolutely dependent on God. In Him are our strength and hope.”.

Prayer: Lord, help me. Increase my faith in your providence,  so that I can hope in you. It is in the middle of trials when I understand that in times of affliction, stress only leaves at the foot of the Master. Amen

LA AFLICCION EN TIEMPOS DE ESTRÉS

Salmo 121:1-8
