Sunday, August 19 WE DIGNIFY WORK PSALM 127

Sunday, August 19
WE DIGNIFY WORK
PSALM 127
Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders’ work is pointless.
Psalm 127:1 CEB

I invite you to meditate on this story:  Three men were employed by a quarry.  A visitor asked the same question to each of them:  “What do you do here, my friend?”  The first answered: “I’m earning 20 pesos a day.”  The second answered, “I’m sawing stones.” The third said:  “I’m helping to build a cathedral.”

These three men did the same work in the same quarry, but the concept that each had of his work was very different.  The first thought about the immediate advantage.  The second applied himself to his work and sought, without a doubt, to do it perfectly.  Only the third worker had the idea of the overall project in the quarry and considered himself a collaborator with the architect, the builder, and all the workers to build a great building.

Whatever our job or profession, we are probably in one of these three categories of workers.  To work like the first worker, for a daily wage, would not be satisfying.  It seems that the second worker already would be better, because he was, without a doubt, concerned about his work, and wanted it to be well done.  It seems to us, nevertheless, that only the work done with the spirit of the third worker is what produces true satisfaction.  There is a need to work with joy, with enthusiasm, and with love.  It is not enough to simply love your work, you must passionately love the goal and set the target very high. Work is contributing what we can with our talents and our strength to achieve on earth the ideal of Jesus Christ.  It is participating in the divine work of the new creation and a new world.  When work is looked at in this way, it is a privilege and an honor.

Prayer: Thank you, good God, for you have given us the work that allows us to share our talents and participate in your calling.  Amen.

 DIGNIFIQUEMOS EL TRABAJO
SALMO  127

Si Jehová no edificare la casa,
en vano trabajan los que la edifican
Salmo 127:1

Saturday, August 18 ALWAYS BENEATH HIS WINGS PSALM 91:1-12

ALWAYS BENEATH HIS WINGS
PSALM 91:1-12

…you’ll find refuge under his wings….
Psalm 91:4 CEB

The people of Israel had experienced difficult times.  They had been defeated, banished, mocked, and separated from their temple.  But after awhile, the blessed hand of God restored them to their land.

Upon their return, they faced the problem of having to live in a land that had been devastated.  Nevertheless, the people shouted with joy and praised the Lord as they began anew and rebuilt the Temple.

I have been through unhappy moments: the death of a loved one, a financial crisis, the loss of a job, moving far away from my friends.

Reflecting on all that has happened in my life, I remember good and bad times.  Every day brings us all types of experiences and offers us the opportunity to begin anew.  What opportunities is God offering you to begin anew?  God took care of me and you in the past and God will take care of us today and always.

Prayer: O God, how blessed we are to receive your grace and love.  Help us to proclaim your faithfulness to all who wish to listen to you.  Amen.

SIEMPRE BAJO SUS ALAS
SALMO 91:1-12

… y debajo de sus alas estarás seguro….
Salmo 91:4

Oración: Oh Dios, cuán bendecidos somos debido a tu gracia y amor.

Friday, August 17 THE PLEASANT COMPANY OF GOD PSALM 71:15-21

Friday, August 17
THE PLEASANT COMPANY OF GOD
PSALM 71:15-21

So even in my old age with gray hair,
don’t abandon me, God!
Psalm 71: 18 CEB

One of our poets calls twilight “The lonely and melancholy hour, when it is almost night and almost not day.  The hour to think of all that has gone, the hour to be sad, without asking why.”  I like his poem, but sundown is for me a precious hour of the day.  I lived for a time in a small town of fishermen, on the coast, and when the sunset came, the range of colors that took over the sky, when the sun is along the horizon is something unforgettable:  orange and gray tones of stunning beauty.  They always repeat: “God has put another day to bed.”
This is how the evening of our lives should be: beautiful, full of peace, finding a way of being useful and giving thanks to God for the days lived and the love of others toward us.
Let’s leave the loneliness and melancholy that the poet speaks of.  Our evenings, with God’s company, should and can be beautiful.

Prayer:  We pray to you God, for the older people, for those who are sick, for those who feel lonely or those who have been abandoned by their families.  Permit us to be company for them in the midst of their loneliness, material and spiritual food in the midst of their hunger, living water that calms their thirst.  May we be a sensitive church that shows the blessing of being alive and at your service!  Amen.

LA GRATA COMPAÑÍA DE DIOS
SALMO  71:15-21

Thursday, August 16 WHERE IS YOUR TREASURE? MATTHEW 6:19-21

Thursday, August 16
WHERE IS YOUR TREASURE?
      MATTHEW  6:19-21

Make for yourselves wallets that don’t wear out—
a treasure in heaven that never wears out.
Luke 12:33b CEB

We have seen that the Kingdom of God becomes a reality on Earth when the will of God is done as completely as it is in heaven.
In other words, Jesus was saying:  Put all of your efforts in obeying the will of God who is the fountain of justice here and now.
Accumulating material things to feed our selfishness and vanity merely wears us out.  The values of the kingdom are based on love.  We do our part with love, trusting always that God will do his part.
No one knows the day or the hour of the second coming of Christ.  How do we want him to find us?  Our life is full of loose ends.  Jesus was able to say to the Father, “I have finished the work that you told me to do.”  And Paul: “I have finished the race.” Can we say the same?  Knowledge and privilege always entail responsibility.  Listen always to the Lord:  Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be.

Prayer: Today, Lord, I want another opportunity to do things well. Help me to look for the riches of your love.  Amen.

DONDE ESTÉ TU TESORO
      MATEO  6:19-21

…Procúrense bolsas que no se hagan viejas,
riqueza sin fin en el cielo…
Lucas 12:33b

Wednesday, August 15 GOD IS WITH US PSALM 46:1-7

Wednesday, August 15
GOD IS WITH US
PSALM 46:1-7

God is our refuge and strength… (NIV)
Psalm 46:1

In my Bible I wrote this phrase which I’d heard some time ago: “Remember in the darkness what you learned in the light,” which is equivalent to “Remember in sad moments the glad moments that God gave you.”

I can assure you that the practice of this recommendation has greatly helped me; and furthermore, has served to remind me that I should give thanks to God for a happy past, for the tests and sadness of yesterday and of today which have molded my character, and for a future that I don’t know, but that in the hands of the Lord will always be the best for me.

If today you are experiencing sadness and pain, raise to God a hymn of gratitude for those that you know. It doesn’t matter whether you intone it well or badly; and remember some or a few moments in which he has filled you with happiness. The calm will return to you because God is with us. Those of us who have sensed the power and the joy of the Lord in our lives cannot forget these experiences, although we pass through difficult moments. In this and always we recognize that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Prayer: Gracious and faithful God, make of this burden, which seems to me a heavy cross, a motive to feel your company on my journey. Thank you. Amen.

DIOS ESTÁ CON NOSOTROS
SALMO 46:1-7

Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza…
Salmo 46:1

Gracias. Amén.

Tuesday, August 14 Anniversary of the church “Rev. Eladio Hernández” (Santa Clara) FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN PSALM 27:1-14

FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN
PSALM 27:1-14

Surely, I am with you always,
even until the end of the age.   (NIV)
                                                                                                                Matthew 28:20

It has been said that religion has its origins in the fear of the unknown. As for me, I believe that my faith is founded upon what I know. It’s possible that the dilemma will be clarified when we distinguish the difference between religion and faith.

We fear the wind that no one has seen, because we know the consequences of its immeasurable forces. We fear the thunder because we know where it comes from, but we don’t know where it’s going. We love the rain that makes our existence possible; we know it, but we fear the consequences of its prolonged presence.

The Psalm was written by someone who is far from the temple in Jerusalem, which was for the Israelites the dwelling of God par excellence. His remoteness led him to nostalgia and a sense of homelessness, including abandonment on God’s part. Nevertheless, amidst all his own tragedy he answers his own question: “The Lord will put me upon a rock on high.”

To be afraid is something normal; the abnormal is that fear grabs one and dominates them, converting him into a slave.

Faith isn’t a hindrance that obstructs the advance of the ship, it’s a motor that drives it. We don’t believe because of fear; we fear for not working in accordance with what we believe and preach. Don’t join the troops of the fearful. As the hymn says, “God is here,” with you and me.

Prayer: Guide my steps, merciful God, so as not to fear the unknown, since you’re with me. Amen.

TEMOR A LO DESCONOCIDO
SALMO 27:1-14

Monday, August 13 GRANDEUR OF GOD, HUMAN GRATITUDE PSALM 19:1-6

Monday, August 13
GRANDEUR OF GOD, HUMAN GRATITUDE
PSALM 19:1-6

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.  (NIV)
Psalm 19:1

The Psalmist attributes all celestial activity to the direct influence of God: in the sun’s rising and the radiance of the stars the Psalmist sees nothing less than the work of the Creator.

Chesterton, the English poet, says that each morning God commands the sun, “Get up you lazy sun and fulfill your obligations.” Nevertheless, some people continue to see contradictions between the scientific laws that rule the movement of the stars of the universe and the action of the Creator.

The believers in our Sunday worship, and even in our solitary meditations, praise God for the celestial vault and for the breeze that murmurs, for the constellations on high, for the immense ocean, for the waters that flow in the streams, for the vast mountains, for the trees that sway, for the grass that we tread upon with our feet.

We also thank the Creator for the gifts that permit us to appreciate so much external beauty; that is to say: the human senses that permit us to admire the splendor of the dawn and receive the perfume of a jasmine.

Is there perhaps a contradiction between the science that measures everything by the universal laws and the Christian, who, not forgetting them, sees God as sustainer of all such laws?

Prayer: We pray to you O God, that you may give us an open heart to all the joy and all the beauty that there is in this world. Allow us to see the manifestation of your glory in the heavens that blaze or in the gentle rustling. In Jesus Christ, amen.

GRANDEZA DE DIOS, GRATITUD HUMANA
SALMO 19:1-6
