WE DIGNIFY WORK

PSALM 127

 Unless the Lord builds the house,

the builders’ work is pointless. 

Psalm 127:1 CEB

I invite you to meditate on this story:  Three men were employed by a quarry.  A visitor asked the same question to each of them:  “What do you do here, my friend?”  The first answered: “I’m earning 20 pesos a day.”  The second answered, “I’m sawing stones.” The third said:  “I’m helping to build a cathedral.” 

These three men did the same work in the same quarry, but the concept that each had of his work was very different.  The first thought about the immediate advantage.  The second applied himself to his work and sought, without a doubt, to do it perfectly.  Only the third worker had the idea of the overall project in the quarry and considered himself a collaborator with the architect, the builder, and all the workers to build a great building. 

Whatever our job or profession, we are probably in one of these three categories of workers.  To work like the first worker, for a daily wage, would not be satisfying.  It seems that the second worker already would be better, because he was, without a doubt, concerned about his work, and wanted it to be well done.  It seems to us, nevertheless, that only the work done with the spirit of the third worker is what produces true satisfaction.  There is a need to work with joy, with enthusiasm, and with love.  It is not enough to simply love your work, you must passionately love the goal and set the target very high. Work is contributing what we can with our talents and our strength to achieve on earth the ideal of Jesus Christ.  It is participating in the divine work of the new creation and a new world.  When work is looked at in this way, it is a privilege and an honor.

Prayer: Thank you, good God, for you have given us the work that allows us to share our talents and participate in your calling.  Amen.

 DIGNIFIQUEMOS EL TRABAJO

SALMO  127

Si Jehová no edificare la casa,

en vano trabajan los que la edifican

Salmo 127:1

Les invito a meditar en esta historia: Tres hombres estaban ocupados en una cantera. Un visitante hizo a cada uno de ellos sucesivamente la misma pregunta: “¿Qué hace usted aquí, amigo mío?”  El primero contestó: “Estoy ganando veinte pesos por día”. El segundo contestó: “Estoy aserrando piedras”. El tercero dijo: “Ayudo a construir una catedral”.

Estos tres hombres hacían el mismo trabajo en la misma cantera, pero el concepto que tenían de su trabajo era muy diferente. El primero pensaba en la ventaja inmediata. El segundo se aplicaba a su tarea y procuraba, sin duda, hacerla perfectamente. Sólo el tercero tenía una idea de conjunto de la obra que se realizaba en la cantera y se consideraba colaborador del arquitecto, del constructor y de todos los obreros, para la construcción de un gran edificio.

Cualquiera que sea nuestro trabajo o profesión, estamos probablemente en una de estas tres categorías de trabajadores. Trabajar como el primer obrero, por el salario diario, no nos proporciona satisfacción alguna. Parecerse al segundo obrero ya sería mejor, porque tenía sin duda, preocupación por su trabajo, quería que estuviese bien hecho. Nos parece, sin embargo, que solamente el trabajo realizado con el espíritu del tercer obrero es el que produce verdadera satisfacción. Hay que trabajar con gozo, con entusiasmo y con amor. No se trata simplemente de amar el trabajo, sino de amar apasionadamente la meta y de colocar ese blanco muy alto. Trabajar es contribuir en la medida de nuestros talentos y de nuestras fuerzas, a la realización en la tierra del ideal de Jesucristo. Es participar en la obra divina de la nueva creación y de un mundo nuevo. Concebido el trabajo así, es un privilegio y una dignidad.

Oración: Gracias buen Dios porque nos diste el trabajo que nos permite entregar nuestros talentos y participar en tu obra. Amén.
