UNLIKE ANY OTHER BIRTH

Luke 1:26-38

And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.

            Christmas is already at the gates, a special period of the year filled with gladness and, which by its very essence, extends beyond the traditionally chosen date. It is the time when we remember that God gives us that most beautiful gift: Jesus. And as a consequence, we are encouraged to offer gifts to one another.

            A man once was watching some ants on the ground. He followed them to where they lived and found a large hole with thousands of ants in it. The man began to think, “If I wanted to talk to these ants, how would I do it? I could shout, but they would neither hear nor understand me. I could write them a letter, but they wouldn’t be able to read it.” Finally he said to himself, “If I could change myself into one of them, I could talk with them and they would understand me.”

            Then he thought, “This is the way in which God also did it. God didn’t just look at us from the sky but made himself into one of us in order to tell us of His love.” The Annunciation reminds us that Jesus was born as a baby, although it was a different, special birth.

            A hymn to be sung as a prayer:

DIFERENTE A CUALQUIER OTRO NACIMIENTO

Lucas 1:26-38

Y ahora, concebirás en tu vientre, y darás a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Jesús

            La Navidad ya está a las puertas, es una época del año llena de alegría y por su misma esencia se extiende más allá de la una fecha tradicional escogida. Es el tiempo cuando recordamos que Dios nos dio el más hermoso regalo: Jesús, y en consecuencia nos animamos a ofrecernos regalos unos a otros(as).

            Una vez un hombre estaba mirando a unas hormigas en el suelo. Las siguió hasta donde vivían y encontró un gran agujero con miles de pequeñas hormigas dentro de él. Y el hombre se puso a pensar: “Si yo quisiera hablar con estas hormigas, ¿cómo lo haría? Podría gritarles, pero no me oirían, ni me entenderíían. Les podría escribir una carta, pero no podrían leerla”. Finalmente se dijo: “Si yo pudiera convertirme en una de ellas podría hablarles y ellas me entenderían”.

            Y luego pensó: “Esta es la forma en que Dios lo hizo también. No solamente nos miró desde el cielo, sino que se hizo como uno de nosotros para hablarnos de Su amor”. La anunciación nos recuerda que Jesús nació como un bebé, aunque fue un  nacimiento diferente, especial.

            Un himno para cantar a modo de oración:

KNOWING HOW TO HOPE IN GOD

Isaiah 40: 27-31

            Chapter 40 begins with an affirmation of comfort to the nation of Israel which endured decades in Babylonian exile thinking perhaps that they would never return to their beloved land. Comforting the Jews came to be a new hope of the powerful action of God’s hand to make that dream possible. But how feasible could that promise be? Wouldn’t there be too many barriers to remove on the social or political level in order to see the return from exile as a real possibility?

            Perhaps this anxiety was the mindset of the ordinary Jew of that time, thinking that God was ignoring them, that God had completely forgotten them in that situation. But the prophet reminds us that God’s hand is that which has created and sustains everything that exists. This is not a God who “grows weary” but a God who strengthens the weary.

            It is important to recognize that our strength comes from God; what is important is to recognize that we are weak so that Christ’s power may reside in us, as affirmed by the Apostle Paul (2 Cor. 12:9). So then, Church of Christ, let us not be anxious in the midst of the difficult national situation that confronts us. God is the sovereign who controls the strings of history; let’s place our full faith in God’s designs to join us to his work and to hope, knowing that God will act.

 

Prayer: We are trusting your method of working, good God; validate our faith.

SABER ESPERAR EN DIOS

Isaías 40: 27-31

El Señor da fuerzas al cansado

Isaías 40:29a

            El capítulo 40 se inicia con una afirmación de consuelo a la nación israelita, la cual llevaba décadas en el exilio babilonio, pensando tal vez que nunca regresaría a su amada tierra. Consolar a los judíos venía a ser una nueva esperanza de la actuación poderosa de la mano de Dios para hacer posible ese sueño. Pero, ¿qué tan factible pudiera ser esa promesa?, ¿no habríían demasiadas barreras a remover en el plano social o político para ver el regreso del exilio como una posibilidad real?

            Tal vez es esta la angustia del modo de pensar del judío promedio en aquellos tiempos, pensando que Dios les ignoraba, que se habría olvidado por completo de su situación. Pero el profeta se encarga de recordar que la mano de Dios es la que ha creado todo lo que existe y lo sostiene; no es un Dios que se “cansa”, todo lo contrario, es un Dios que da fuerzas al cansado.

            Es importante reconocer que las fuerzas nos vienen de Dios, lo realmente provechoso es reconocerse débil para que repose en nosotros el poder de Cristo, tal como afirmaba el apóstol Pablo (2 Cor 12:9). Así pues, iglesia de Cristo, no nos angustiemos en medio de la difícil situación nacional que enfrentamos, Dios es el soberano que controla los hilos de la historia; pongamos nuestra confianza plena en sus designios para sumarnos a su obra y esperar, sabiendo que Él actuará.

 

Oración: Estamos confiando en tu modo de obrar, buen Dios, sostén nuestra fe. Amen.

Learning to Listen

I Samuel 3:1-12

Let anyone with ears listen!

            God’s call to Samuel contains nuances that are unique in all the Bible. First of all, Samuel was barely an adolescent, some twelve years old according the the Jewish historian Josephus, but what is most striking is what we find in verse 7, that although Samuel lived in the Temple, he had not yet known the Lord, nor had his word been revealed to him.

            If Samuel had to “learn” to discern the divine voice in order to listen, we have in the story another sad case of one who had not learned to listen in the priest Eli himself. God in some way had delivered sentences to him concerning the impropriety of his sons’ conduct (cf. Verse 12) but, as a result, he had not acted.

            Listening is not simply knowing that our hearing faculties are working properly.

            In his calling, God works in surprising ways, and although it is clear that judgment exists against those who fail in their duty, it is wonderful that God wants to use us in his service if only we are attentive to his voice and are ready to follow it. Let’s learn to listen.

 

Prayer: Beloved Lord, we humbly ask that you open our ears to learn to discern your Voice among so many other voices that often pretend to raise themselves with equal authority. May we know how to fulfill your will by listening to you and obeying you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Aprender a escuchar.

I Samuel 3:1-12

El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga

            El llamamiento de Dios a Samuel tiene matices únicos en toda la Biblia. Primeramente, Samuel era tan solo un adolescente, unos doce años según el historiador judío Josefo, pero lo máás impactante resulta lo que afirma el vers. 7, aunque Samuel habitaba en el tabernáculo aún no había conocido a Yahvé ni su palabra se le había revelado.

            Si bien Samuel tuvo que “aprender” a discernir la voz divina para poder escuchar, tenemos en la historia otro caso triste de quien no ha sabido escuchar en el propio sacerdote Elí. A él de algún modo Dios le ha proferido sentencias acerca de lo impropio de la conducta de sus hijos (cf. vers.12), y no ha actuado consecuentemente.

            Escuchar no es simplemente saber que nuestro aparato auditivo cumple adecuadamente sus funciones.

            Dios obra de modos sorprendentes en su llamado, y aunque queda claro que existe juicio contra quienes faltan a su deber, resulta maravilloso que quiera utilizarnos a su servicio tan solo si estamos atentos a su voz y nos aprestamos a seguirla. Aprendamos a escuchar.

 

Oración: Señor amado, te pedimos humildemente que abras nuestros oídos para aprender a discernir Tu Voz entre tantas voces que a veces pretenden levantarse con igual autoridad. Que sepamos cumplir tu voluntad al escucharte y obedecerte. Por Jesús. Amén.

A WISE COMMAND

Ephesians 5: 15-20

Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit

Ephesians 5: 18 (NRSV)

            I have chosen this verse because alcoholism is one of the most lethal and destructive pandemics for the individual and those around him. I can assure them that it is a type of earthly hell. This is in opposition to the fruits of the Spirit. Recently I was in the house of a family that I had not visited in more than thirty years, and I found a gloomy scene: the only son, already in old age, completely drunk. For many years, he had brought sadness and despair to his parents, loved ones, and the neighborhood. God, free us from this hell! Let us intercede for those tortured all the time by this heartbreaking scourge of great consternation.

            The recommended path is to fill oneself not with wine but with the Holy Spirit. For our lives it will always be a reason for gratitude to live guided by that Spirit which produces excellent virtues (read Galatians 5; 22-23), and that wherever we live and work, all may see and sense the fruits that God gives us daily for the blessing of all. Let’s get drunk on God’s Word that gives us the fruits of the Creator.

 

Prayer: Holy Father, thank you for all the institutions that struggle so that addiction to alcohol or any sort of narcotic may be conquered and not destroy people, families and society. We know that the Holy Spirit can restore them. In your name we ask this and give you thanks. Amen.

UN SABIO MANDATO

Efesios 5: 15-20

No se emborrachen, pues eso lleva al desenfreno; al contrario, llénense del Espíritu Santo

Efesios 5: 18

            Escogí este verso porque el alcoholismo es una de las más letales y destructivas pandemias para el individuo y los que le rodean. Les puedo asegurar que es un tipo de infierno terrenal. Esto en oposición a los frutos del Espiritu. Estuve en días recientes en casa de una familia que hacía más de 30 años no visitaba, y me encontré con un cuadro tétrico: el único hijo, ya de la tercera edad, completamente borracho. Este les había traído durante muchos años tristeza y desesperación a los padres, seres queridos y al barrio. ¡Dios nos libre de ese infierno! Intercedamos por los torturados todo el tiempo por ese flagelo desconsolador y de inmensa consternación.

            La actitud recomendada es la de llenarse, no de vino, sino del Espíritu Santo. Para nuestras vidas será siempre motivo de gratitud el vivir guiados por ese Espíritu que produce virtudes excelentes (lea Galatas 5: 22-23), y que dondequiera que vivamos y trabajemos, nos vean y sientan los frutos que Dios nos regala cada día para bendición de todos. Emborrachémonos con la Palabra de Dios que nos regala los frutos del Creador.

 

Oración: Padre Santo, gracias por todas las instituciones que luchan para que la adicció¢n al alcohol o cualquier otro estupefaciente sea vencida y no destruya a personas, familias y sociedad. Sabemos que el Espíritu Santo puede restaurarles. En su nombre te lo pedimos y te damos gracias. Amén.

The Fourth Sunday of Advent

FROM THE ORDINARY TO THE EXTRAORDINARY

Luke 1:39-45

. . .be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect

Romans 12:2 (NRSV)

            We are almost in the shadow of Christmas. The story of Mary’s visit to her relative Elizabeth would pass as an ordinary or traditional event, but how extraordinary is the way that two women who are not the sort that we would call “personalities” greet each other? However, we might also say that in some way this was the first meeting between Jesus and John the Baptist, if only through the wombs of two pregnant women.

            God is acting from within the bodies of these women, and everything bids us to see how the divine strength transforms them. Elizabeth understands that God is doing great things through Mary. The insignificant youth from Nazareth is, in fact, the most important woman in History. Her presence makes us leap with joy and enthusiasm. Mary is great because she has believed, because she has surrendered completely to God who has called her. Mary knew whom to trust and that all that God had promised would be fulfilled.

            In the same way God is acting in each of us transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Let’s trust in God.

 

Prayer: Lord, I beg you to send what you must in order to transform my life and to do extraordinary things in me. Amen.

DE LO ORDINARIO A LO EXTRAORDINARIO

San Lucas 1:39-45

“Transfórmense por medio de la renovación de su mente, para que comprueben  cuáál es la voluntad de Dios, lo que es bueno, agradable y perfecto”

Romanos 12:2

            Estamos casi en el umbral de la Navidad. El relato de la visita de María a su parienta Elisabet pasaría como un hecho ordinario o costumbrista, pues ¿qué de extraordinario tiene que dos mujeres, que no son de esas que pretenciosamente llamamos “personalidades”, se saluden? Sin embargo, de alguna manera diríamos que se trata del primer encuentro entre Jesús y Juan el Bautista, solo que a través de los vientres de dos mujeres embarazadas.

            Dios está actuando desde dentro de los cuerpos de estas mujeres, y todo nos invita a observar cómo la fuerza divina las transforma. Elisabet comprende que Dios está haciendo cosas grandes en María. La joven insignificante de Nazaret es, en realidad, la mujer más importante de la Historia. Su presencia hace saltar de alegría y de entusiasmo. María es grande porque ha creído, porque se ha entregado totalmente a Dios que la ha llamado. María ha sabido en quién confiar, y todo lo que Dios le ha prometido se cumplirá.

            También Dios está actuando en cada uno de nosotros, transformando lo ordinario en extraordinario. Confiemos en Él.

 

Oración: Señor, te suplico que envíes al que has de enviar, para que transforme mi vida y haga en mí cosas extraordinarias. Amén.

ISRAEL’S GREATEST KING

Psalm 51

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.

            In soap operas we see how REPENTANCE plays a fundamental role in conflict resolution, and reconciliation appears when PARDON exists. The inseparable power of both becomes effective with their true application.

            King David had committed very serious capital sins, but he left to us for all history in an amplified form what Jesus summed up in the model prayer for all Christians. This is the point that joins all Christians in the world together. The great value that this psalm holds is that it helps us to live every day in renewal, drawing closer our relationships with the Heavenly Father and with our neighbors through transparency which brings us to an authentic and powerful relationship.

            Psalm 51 is one of the most beautiful and illustrative pieces of literature that has been written to show us the most powerful weapons that human beings have as the only way of reconciliation with God, to aspire to include ourselves in the Book of Life

 

Prayer: Thank you for showing us the Way, the Truth, and the Life, your Only Begotten Son. Through your Holy Spirit, you direct our steps to avoid committing the same mistakes and show us the Greatest King over all Humanity, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

EL REY MÁS GRANDE DE ISRAEL

Salmo 51

Crea en mí, oh Dios, un corazón limpio, y renueva un espíritu recto dentro de mi"

            En las telenovelas vemos  como el ARREPENTIMIENTO desempeña un papel fundamental en la solución de conflictos, y la reconciliación se materializa cuando existe EL PERDÓN. La potencia inseparable de ambos se hace efectiva con su verdadera aplicación.

            El Rey David había cometido pecados capitales, muy graves, pero nos  dejó para la historia en forma ampliada lo que Jesús resumió en la oración modelo de todos los cristianos; este es el punto de fusión de todos los cristianos del planeta.  El alto valor que tiene este salmo es que nos ayuda a vivir cada día renovándonos,  estrechando nuestras relaciones con el Padre Celestial y con el prójimo con transparencia, lo que nos lleva a una auténtica y poderosa relación.

            El Salmo 51 es una de los más hermosas e ilustrativas piezas literarias que se han escrito jamás para mostrarnos las armas más poderosas con las que cuenta el ser humano como única vía de reconciliación con Dios, paraaspirar a incluirnos en el Libro de la Vida.

Oración: Gracias por enseñarnos el Camino, la Verdad, y la Vida, Tu Unigénito Hijo, a través del Espíritu Santo nos dirige los pasos para evitar cometer los mismos errores y nos muestra al Rey más Grande para toda la Humanidad, Jesucristo, en cuyo Nombre te lo pedimos. Amén.

MY MOTHER AND MY SIBLINGS

Mark 3:31-35

Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.

            This affirmation of the God of Love incarnate in Jesus Christ totally revolutionizes the concept of family, raising the blunt and irrefutible reality that humans have lived throughout history.

            We can simply ask ourselves the number of times that people without blood bonds to us have in a more humane manner fulfilled the will of the Creator than our own family members, and we are certain that they are the realities that make up the true idea of family. I have had experiences where, at critical times, people appeared who were more concerned and involved in concrete acts of assistance than those who call themselves Christians. Here is where the words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:21 are fulfilled: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.”

            In Matthew 25, the Judgment of the Nations, Jesus recounts the acts that really count before God, actions that emanate from a true LOVE. José Martí said, “Only love builds.” God invites us to convert ourselves into constructive channels of reconciliation, solidarity, service, joy, faith, hope, and enjoyment as a true family.

 

Prayer: Father of all, help us to create a true family in fulfillment of Your Will as an effective link in our daily life by means of your Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus Christ we ask it of you. Amen.

MI MADRE Y HERMANOS/AS

Marcos 3:31-35

Cualquiera que hace la voluntad de Dios, ése es mi hermano, mi hermana y mi madre

Marcos 3: 35

            Esta afirmación del Dios de Amor encarnado en Jesucristo revoluciona totalmente el concepto de familia, llevándolo a la realidad tajante e indiscutible que los seres humanos han vivido en toda su historia.

            Simplemente podemos preguntarnos las veces que personas sin vínculo sanguíneo se han comportado más humanas cumpliendo con la voluntad del Creador que los propios familiares, y estamos seguros que son realidades que configuran la verdadera concepción de familia. He tenido experiencias donde en momentos críticos se aparecen personas más preocupadas y ocupadas en acciones concretas de auxilio que las que dicen ser cristianas. Aquí se cumple lo que dice Jesucristo en Mateo 7:21: "No todo el que me dice SEÑOR, SEÑOR, entrará en el Reino de los Cielos, sino el que hace la voluntad de mi Padre que está en los cielos".

            En Mateo 25, en el Juicio a las Naciones, Jesús relaciona las acciones que realmente cuentan ante Dios, que emanan de un verdadero AMOR.  Decía José Martí: SÓLO EL AMOR CONSTRUYE. Dios nos invita a convertirnos en canales constructivos de reconciliación, solidaridad, servicio, gozo, fe, esperanza, y disfrutar así de una familia verdadera.

 

Oración: Padre de todo Amor, ayúdanos a construir una verdadera familia al cumplir Tu Voluntad como vínculo  efectivo en nuestro vivir diario a través de tu Santo Espíritu. En el nombre de Jesucristo te lo imploramos. Amén.
