Presbyterian Day in Cuba

I HAVE HOPE

I CORINTHIANS 3:5-9

..but God made it grow.

I Cor. 3:6b (NIV)

            The beginning of the Presbyterian work in Cuba began through a humble worker, a tobacco worker by profession, named Evaristo Collazo, and his wife Magdalena.  They began to work at their own expense in their home in Havana and extended preaching points to two other places in the capital.  Before the growth of the ministry, they sought help from the Board of Missions of the North American Presbyterian Church.   

            In the letter of request, Collazo affirmed: “I am inspired by the hope that this seed that the Lord, through his Spirit, has driven me to plant, will never disappear.”

            This day is recognized as the official beginning of the Presbyterian work in our country, which celebrates 130 years today.  A work that, in the midst of barriers and difficulties, has continued serving to glorify God and to extend his Kingdom in our midst.  Each one of us is called to be new Collazos and Magdalenas, inspired by this hope that God is the one who gives the growth.   

Prayer: We give you thanks today, our good God, for the Cuban Presbyterian Church. Sustain our ministries and testimony and make us faithful followers of this legacy.  Through Jesus, Amen.

Día del Presbiterianismo en Cuba

TENGO LA ESPERANZA

I CORINTIOS 3:5-9

… pero el crecimiento lo ha dado Dios

I Cor. 3:6

            El principio del trabajo presbiteriano en Cuba se le adjudica a un humilde obrero, tabaquero de profesión, llamado Evaristo Collazo, y a su esposa Magdalena. Ellos comenzaron a trabajar por su propia cuenta en su casa, en La Habana, y extendieron centros de predicación además en otros dos lugares de la capital. Ante el crecimiento de la obra, solicitan ayuda a la Junta de Misiones de la Iglesia presbiteriana norteamericana.

            En la carta Collazo afirmaba: “me siento inspirado por la esperanza de que esta semilla, que el Señor, por su Espíritu, me ha impulsado a plantar, jamás desaparecerá”.

            Este día se reconoce el inicio oficial de la obra presbiteriana en nuestra patria, que hoy cumple 130 años de comenzada. Una obra que en medio de avatares y dificultades, continúa sirviendo para glorificar a Dios y extender su Reino en medio nuestro. A cada uno de nosotros, nos corresponde ser nuevos Collazos y Magdalenas, inspirados por esa esperanza de que es Dios quien da el crecimiento.

Oración: Gracias te damos hoy, nuestro buen Dios, por la iglesia presbiteriana cubana. Sostén nuestros ministerios y testimonio, y haznos fieles continuadores de este legado. Por Jesús. Amén.
