AND WERE THEY HAPPY?
1 PETER 3:1-12

Do not adorn yourselves outwardly by braiding your hair, and by wearing gold ornaments or fine clothing; rather, let your adornment be the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight.

1 Peter 3:3-4 (NSRV)

Despite fairy tales, there is no guarantee that people who get married will be happy forever. Things sometimes go terribly wrong. Even with the best intentions, we may find ourselves in a house filled with resentment, hostility, and disgrace.  There is no greater pain than that of an unhappy marriage.

However, a difficult marriage may be the framework in which God deals with the “inner self.” Instead of focusing solely on what is wrong with our spouse, we need to open our hearts to the Lord and ask Him to confront the evil that is in us. He will begin to do it kindly, little by little but with generosity. We will begin to see ourselves as we are, and not the person we had imagined ourselves to be. We will come to see how much we need the Savior’s forgiveness and the Spirit’s help to do, in love, what is right even when we have been harmed.

There are no guarantees in life except the love of God. With His help, we can change. Although all the ills of our marriage may not be cured, God’s grace can heal us.

Prayer: Thank you Lord, for the opportunity you give us to approach you through prayer. I place my marriage and my family in your hands. Bless them.
Amen.
