RECIPROCATING LOVE
1 JOHN 4: 16-21
“Whoever loves God must also love his
brother.”
1 John 4: 21 b
A beautiful princess was in search of a spouse. Many hopeful men came from all over bearing
marvelous gifts. Among the candidates was a young commoner whose only riches
were his love. When his turn came, he said:
Princess, I am a poor man and I
can only offer you my sacrifice as proof of my love. I will spend one hundred
days below your window, with no more to drink than the rain and no more shelter
than the clothes I am now wearing. Moved by such a gesture of love, the princess
accepted. And thus the days passed. The young man stayed outside the palace,
enduring the sun, the winds, the snow and the cold nights. On the ninety-ninth day, to everyone’s
astonishment and without giving any explanations, the young man withdrew from
the place where he had remained nearly a hundred days. Several weeks later, someone asked him: What happened? Why did you withdraw? The commoner replied with great
sadness: The princess did not spare me from even a single day of suffering… She
did not deserve my love.
Like the princess in this story, there are times when we demand
proofs of love from God or from our loved ones and we do nothing to reciprocate
or to deserve that love. Let us not be so demanding, and let us give ourselves
to God and to others with that sublime love that Jesus taught us!
Prayer: Jesus, teach us to love as you love us.
CORRESPONDER AL AMOR
1 JUAN 4: 16-21
“El que ama a Dios, ame también a
su hermano”
1 Juan 4: 21 b
Se cuenta que una bella princesa
buscaba esposo. Muchos pretendientes llegaron de todas partes con maravillosos
regalos. Entre los candidatos había un joven plebeyo que no tenía más riquezas
que su amor. Cuando le llegó el momento, dijo: Princesa, soy un hombre pobre
y sólo te ofrezco mi sacrificio como prueba de amor. Estaré cien días sentado
bajo tu ventana, sin más alimentos que la lluvia y sin más ropas que las que
llevo puestas. La princesa, conmovida por tal gesto de amor, aceptó. Así
pasaron los días. El pretendiente permaneció afuera del palacio, soportando el
sol, los vientos, la nieve y las noches frías. Al llegar el día noventa y
nueve, ante la perplejidad de todos y sin dar explicaciones, el joven se alejó
del lugar donde había permanecido casi cien días. Unas semanas después, alguien
le preguntó: ¿Qué te ocurrió? ¿Por qué te retiraste? El plebeyo contestó
con gran tristeza: La princesa no me ahorró ni un día de sufrimiento... No
merecía mi amor.
A veces como la princesa de esta historia exigimos
pruebas de amor departe de Dios o de nuestros seres queridos y no hacemos nada
para corresponder o merecer dicho amor. ¡No exijamos tanto y entreguémonos a
Dios y a los demás con ese amor sublime que nos enseñó Jesús!
Oración: Jesús, enséñanos a amar
como tú nos amas.
