THE GREAT UNKNOWN

ACTS 2:1-11

“Do not cast me from your presence

Or take your Holy Spirit from me.”

Psalm 51:11

“No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit” (Acts 19:2).  This was the reply given by the Christians in Ephesus.  But I am afraid that it would be the same reply given by many Christians today.  It has been said, with good reason, that the Holy Spirit is the great unknown in the Church.  The Jews gave the name of “Pentecost” to the fifty days after the Passover feasts, especially to the final day of celebration.  Pentecost crowns the fifty days of Jesus’ victory over death, his appearances to the disciples, and his ascension.  I wonder:  What can we learn today from this day of celebration?  On Pentecost Jesus gives us his Spirit, so that we can be renewed.  When we receive it and when we all have the same Spirit, we will understand one another, even if we speak different languages and do not think the same way. And a new creation will arise. We, who by God’s mercy know that the Holy Spirit exists, should not allow him to pass us by, but rather we should urge him to push us to confess God before the world in the only way that is acceptable and credible:  by living our lives as our God wishes us to live.

Prayer: God of grace, allow the Holy Spirit to always be our strength, and to impart to us today the same fervor that he placed in the hearts of the first disciples. Amen.

EL GRAN DESCONOCIDO

HECHOS 2:1-11

“¡No me despidas de tu presencia,

ni quites de mí tu santo espíritu!”

“Ni siquiera habíamos oído hablar del Espíritu Santo” (Hch 19:2), esta fue la respuesta que dieron los cristianos de Éfeso. Pero me temo que esa misma sería la respuesta de muchos cristianos de hoy. Se ha dicho, y con razón, que el Espíritu Santo es el gran desconocido en la Iglesia. Los judíos llamaron "Pentecostés" a los cincuenta días que prolongaban las fiestas pascuales y sobre todo al último de ellos. Pentecostés culmina los 50 días de victoria de Jesús sobre la muerte, sus apariciones a los discípulos y su ascensión. Me pregunto: ¿Tendrá algo que decirnos a nosotros hoy esta fiesta? En Pentecostés Jesús nos entrega su Espíritu, para que nos renovemos. Cuando lo recibamos y todos tengamos un mismo Espíritu, nos entenderemos, aunque hablemos diferentes idiomas o pensemos de manera diferente. Y surgirá la nueva creación. Nosotros, que por la misericordia de Dios sabemos que existe el Espíritu Santo, debemos impedir que pase de largo en nuestra vida e instarle a que nos empuje a confesar a Dios ante el mundo de la única forma que es aceptable y creíble: viviendo como nuestro Dios, quiere que vivamos.

Oración: Dios de gracia, haz que el Espíritu Santo sea siempre nuestra fuerza, y que nos comunique hoy el mismo ardor que puso en los corazones de los primeros discípulos. Amén.
