THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

GALATIANS 5:16-26

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

Galatians 5:22

In Haiti there is a tree that grows inside of another tree. The latter gradually loses its strength as the one growing within takes over its life almost completely and is now the only one producing fruit.  Paul speaks to the Galatians about the fruits of the Spirit in a Christian. Through our faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in our hearts and begins to work out our sanctification.  He gradually takes over the various spheres of our lives and produces his fruits in us.  In order for this process to develop in a stable manner, however, we have to be committed to Him and attentive to the appearance of those fruits that do not proceed from the Spirit.  Feelings such as envy, or a slight lack of trust in the face of another’s actions, can produce coldness and enmity in us. Upon discovering those fruits, we need to act radically. We must acknowledge them, call them by their proper names, and present them to the Lord in repentance. He will take care of the rest.

PRAYER: Father of love, help me to find those fruits within me that do not proceed from you.  Burn them; produce within me love, joy, peace, self-control.  Thank you for the work of your Spirit within us.  Through Christ.  Amen.

EL FRUTO DEL ESPÍRITU

GÁLATAS 5:16-26

“Mas el fruto del Espíritu es el amor, gozo,

paz, paciencia, benignidad, bondad, fe”

Gálatas 5:22

En Haití hay un árbol que crece dentro de otro árbol. Este fue gradualmente perdiendo fuerzas, mientras que el que crecía adentro se posesionaba de su vida casi totalmente y es ya hoy el único que produce frutos. Pablo les habla a los Gálatas de los frutos del Espíritu en el cristiano. Por nuestra fe en Cristo, el Espíritu Santo viene a morar en nuestros corazones y comienza a obrar nuestra santificación. Él va dominando las diferentes esferas de nuestra vida y produciendo sus frutos en nosotros. Sin embargo, para que este proceso se desarrolle de modo estable, tenemos que estar rendidos a Él y atentos a la aparición de aquellos frutos que no provienen del  Espíritu. Sentimientos como la envidia, o una leve desconfianza frente a la acción de otro, puede ocasionar nuestro distanciamiento y enemistad. Al descubrir estos frutos, hay que obrar radicalmente. Reconozcámoslos, llamémosle por su nombre y presentémoslos ante el Señor en arrepentimiento. Él se encarga del resto.

Oración: Padre de amor, ayúdame a descubrir en mí los frutos que no proceden de ti. Quémalos, produce en mí amor, gozo, paz, templanza. Gracias por la obra de tu Espíritu en nosotros. Por Cristo. Amén.
