Day of Ecumenical Prayer for Childhood

LITTLE GIRL, GET UP!

MARK 5: 21-42

Jesus took her by the hand and said to her: “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).

Mark 5:41

I have always wondered: What had immobilized this little girl to the point of leaving her looking as if she were dead? The actions taken by Jesus enlighten us:  He took her by the hand.  The girl needed support, emotional contact, familiar warmth, love.  But Jesus also told her: “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”  And the little girl needed this as well:  confidence. While everyone around her was crying or had given up any hope, Jesus reaffirms the life of this adolescent, and fills her with confidence.  This enables the girl to get up and walk. 

This story makes me think of so many children in the world who live like this, half-asleep and half-dead, barefoot in the street in the cold nights, searching for something to eat, sleeping on sheets of cardboard in the middle of the street. What kinds of dreams do these children have?  What are their joys?  In our context, we don’t have this cruel reality, but we have little girls and boys for whom even having a loving family is not enough. I am thinking of girls and boys who, due to the rapid dynamics of their parents’ lives, do not receive a hand of support in the midst of their conflicts.  I am thinking of those who do not receive words of confidence or of praise for an accomplishment.  I am thinking of boys and girls who prefer to tell their problems to their friends, because at home there is neither the time nor the trust to talk.  Some even go in different directions instead of throwing themselves upon their beds, and a wall begins to build up between them and the rest of their family.  Let us think about this and intercede on behalf of those children and adolescents in our world.

Prayer: God of goodness, we pray for the many children in the world who do not receive love, or even their daily bread.  We pray for the boys, girls and adolescents in our homes, that we may always be able to extend our hands to them so that they feel confidence and love and can walk in your ways.  Amen.

¡MUCHACHA, LEVÁNTATE!

MARCOS 5: 21-42

Jesús la tomó de la mano, y le dijo:

«¡Talita cumi!», es decir, «A ti niña te digo: ¡levántate!»

Marcos 5:41

Siempre me he preguntado ¿Qué inmovilizó a esta muchacha de la historia, hasta dejarla con apariencia de muerte? Las acciones de Jesús  nos iluminan: Él la tomó de la mano. La muchacha necesitaba apoyo, contacto emocional, calor familiar, amor. Pero también Jesús le dijo: Muchacha, a ti te digo, levántate. Y esto también necesitaba la muchacha: confianza. Mientras todos a su alrededor lloraban o se burlaban ante cualquier rayo de esperanza, Jesús afirma la vida de esta adolescente, y la llena de confianza. Esto hizo a la muchacha levantarse y caminar. Esta historia me hace pensar en tantos niños  en el mundo que viven así, como dormidos hasta la muerte, descalzos en la calle en medio de la fría noche, procurando una moneda para comer, durmiendo en cajas de cartón en medio de la calle. ¿Cuáles son los sueños de estos niños y niñas? ¿Cuáles son sus alegrías?, En nuestro contexto, no tenemos esta cruda realidad, pero tenemos niñas y niños, que aunque tienen una familia que les quiere, esto no resulta suficiente. Pienso en niñas y niños que por la rápida dinámica de vida en que viven sus padres no reciben una mano de apoyo en medio de sus conflictos. Pienso en aquellos que no reciben frases de confianza o de elogio ante una meta alcanzada. Pienso en muchachos y muchachas que prefieren contar a los amigos y amigas sus problemas, porque en la casa no hay tiempo o confianza para hablar. Algunos incluso en vez de tirarse en la cama, se van hacia otros caminos, y se va levantando un muro entre ellos y el resto de la familia. Meditemos en esto e intercedamos por los niños y adolescentes en nuestro mundo.

Oración: Dios bueno, te pedimos por tantos niños en el mundo que no reciben amor, ni el pan cotidiano. Te pedimos por los niños, niñas  y adolescentes en nuestros hogares, que siempre podamos extenderles nuestras manos para que sientan confianza y amor y puedan caminar en tus caminos. Amén.
