THE VEIL OVER HIS FACE

EXODUS 34: 29-35

“We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away.” 

2 Corinthians 3:13

The incident of the divine revelation on Mount Sinai to the Israelites has resulted in a great amount of very interesting stories.  If we focus on the narration of Exodus chapter 19, we observe manifestations of the divine presence that naturally caused a reaction of fear among the people, to the point of begging Moses to deal with God by himself alone and to later share the Lord’s will with them.

First with the tablets of the Law, and then later through a long period of time in God’s presence on that mountain, when Moses descends to communicate the divine commandments, the text tells us that Moses’ skin was radiant.  His exposure to God’s holiness has given an unheard of brilliance to his face.  And this also generates fear among many; the solution found by Moses is to cover his face with a veil.

When Paul writes his second letter to the Corinthians he offers an additional explanation:  that covering of his face was so that the people would not focus on what is temporary and showy, and to truly become aware of God’s will as it was being revealed to them.

It is easy to mistake our focus of attention:  we are attracted to brilliance, though ephemeral, and we tend to forget what is really essential and important.

Prayer: We need to shake off the inability to see through what is transitory, and to obey.  We need your grace in order to lead a Christian life according to your will.  Amen.

EL VELO SOBRE EL ROSTRO

ÉXODO 34: 29-35

“Y no como Moisés,  que ponía un velo sobre su rostro

para que los hijos de Israel no fijaran la vista

en el fin de aquello que había de desaparecer.” 

2 Corintios  3:13

El incidente de la revelación divina en el monte Sinaí a los israelitas presenta una gran cantidad de historias todas muy interesantes. Si nos fijamos en la narración del capítulo 19 de Éxodo, allí se observan manifestaciones de la presencia divina que lógicamente motivaron la reacción de temor del pueblo, al punto de clamar a Moisés que se las entendiera él solo con Dios y luego les hablara a ellos revelando la voluntad del Señor.

Ahora con las tablas de la Ley, luego de un largo tiempo en presencia de Dios en aquel monte, cuando Moisés baja a comunicar los mandatos divinos, nos dice el texto que la piel de Moisés brillaba. Algo así como que la exposición a lo sagrado le ha dado un fulgor inaudito a su rostro. Y esto también genera temor entre muchos; la solución que encuentra Moisés es cubrir su rostro con un velo.

Cuando Pablo escribe su segunda epístola a los corintios ofrece una explicación adicional: aquel cubrirse el rostro era para que el pueblo no pusiera su vista en lo transitorio y llamativo y realmente tomara conciencia de la voluntad de Dios que se les revelaba.

Resulta fácil equivocar el centro de atención, nos atrae lo llamativo, aunque efímero, y tendemos a olvidar lo realmente esencial e importante.

Oración: Necesitamos sacudirnos la incapacidad de mirar a lo trascendente, y obedecer. Necesitamos de tu gracia para llevar la vida cristiana como es tu voluntad. Amén.
