HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER

PROVERBS 4

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”

Exodus 20:12

There was once an old man who had lost his wife and lived alone.  He had worked as a tailor his entire life, but misfortune had left him penniless. The old man became weaker and weaker, and his children visited him less and less.  He stayed awake all one night wondering what would happen to him and he finally came up with a plan. He filled an old trunk with broken pieces of glass, closed it up and placed it underneath the dining room table.  When his children came for dinner, they felt it with their feet, and looking under the table they asked:  “What is inside that trunk?” The old man replied: “Oh, just some things I’ve saved!”  His children saw that it was very heavy and thought that it was filled with a great amount of money saved over many years. They deliberated and decided to move in with their father, in order to watch over the treasure. One day the father got sick and died. The children gave him a nice funeral, since they knew that a fortune awaited them beneath the kitchen table.  When the ceremony was over, they looked all over the house until they found the key, and they opened the trunk.  Upon finding it filled with broken pieces of glass, the eldest son exclaimed: “What infamy!  What cruelty to his children!” “Let’s be honest,” said another one of the sons. “If it hadn’t been for the trunk, we would have neglected him to the end of his days.”  

The eldest son was very angry and knocked over the trunk to make sure that there were no valuable objects hidden among the broken glass.  His siblings looked silently inside and read an inscription that their father had left for them on the bottom: “Honor your father and your mother”.

Prayer: God of goodness, we pray for the elderly who are alone and unattended; help us to care for them.  Make us into grateful sons and daughters. Amen.

PROVERBIOS 4

“Honrarás a tu padre y a tu madre, para que tu vida

se alargue en la tierra que yo, el Señor tu Dios, te doy”

Éxodo 20:12

Érase una vez un anciano que había perdido a su esposa y vivía solo. Él trabajó como sastre toda su vida, pero los infortunios lo habían dejado en bancarrota. El anciano estaba cada vez más débil, y los hijos lo visitaban cada vez menos. Se pasó una noche en vela pensando qué sería de él y al fin trazó un plan. Se hizo de un cofre viejo y lo llenó de vidrios rotos, lo cerró y lo puso debajo de la mesa del comedor. Cuando sus hijos fueron a cenar, lo tocaron con los pies, y mirando bajo la mesa preguntaron: - ¿Qué hay en ese cofre? El anciano respondió: - ¡Oh sólo algunas cosas que he ahorrado! Sus hijos vieron que era muy pesado y pensaron que se trataba de una gran cantidad de dinero ahorrado a lo largo de los años. Deliberaron y decidieron turnarse para vivir con el padre, y así custodiar el tesoro. Un día el padre enfermó y falleció. Los hijos le hicieron un bonito funeral, pues sabían que una fortuna los aguardaba bajo la mesa de la cocina. Cuando terminó la ceremonia, buscaron en toda la casa hasta encontrar la llave, y abrieron el cofre. Al encontrarlo lleno de vidrios rotos el hijo mayor exclamó:-¡Qué infamia, que crueldad para con sus hijos!- Seamos francos, de no haber sido por el cofre, lo habríamos descuidado hasta el final de sus días-dijo otro de los hijos.

El hijo mayor muy enojado, volcó el cofre para asegurarse de que no hubiera ningún objeto valioso oculto entre los vidrios. Los hermanos miraron silenciosamente dentro y leyeron una inscripción que el padre les había dejado en el fondo: "Honrarás a tu padre y a tu madre"

Oración: Dios bueno, te pedimos por los ancianos que están solos y desatendidos, ayúdanos a acompañarles. Haznos hijos agradecidos. Amén
