Sunday, March 15 THOSE “EMPIRES” THAT TIE US DOWN LAMENTATIONS 5

Sunday, March 15
those “EMPIRES” that tie us down
LamentaTions 5

“Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us;
Look, and see our disgrace.”
Lamentations 5:1

After the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the people of Israel came to the end of their monarchical period.  The hostile presence of the colonizers plunged the Israelites into innumerable disgraces, among them the sense of control over their lives, as today’s Scripture reading tells us. This feeling of persecution was the result of a very difficult historical reality, and only in God did they find the necessary refuge in order to survive this and many other ups and downs over several centuries.
Today we face other “empires” that also limit our freedom.  Take the example of the empire of consumption, that tendency that continues to gain more and more ground in our country. Dependence on material things and their constant renewal even when unnecessary can become the god that replaces God in our lives.  We need to be alert in order to realize that such empires can completely destroy us, as the Babylonians did to Israel.

Let us open our ears to the prophets and prophetesses of those times:  those who denounce the abuses of power that directly or indirectly affect our societies and thus also our spirituality.  Let us place God at the center of our lives and he will guide us through paths of freedom and discernment.

Prayer: Blessed God, you who reign over everything and everyone, give us sufficient clarity to listen to your voice and to follow it without wavering.  Give us the firmness to keep from falling into the hands of the many empires that tempt us each day. Amen.

Esos imperios que nos atan
Lamentaciones 5

“Acuérdate, Jehová, de lo que nos ha sucedido;
mira y ve nuestro oprobio”
Lamentaciones 5:1
