THE POWER OF ANOINTING

LuKE 7:36-50

“…and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears.  Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.”

Luke 7:38

This Tuesday of Holy Week, within this episode of the gospel, we can recall something that was crucial throughout the entire ministry of Jesus:  he truly knew those around him and gave his gift to them, according to each individual’s needs.  And this is a text in which the particular needs of each individual are evident. The woman: she needed to be received, to collaborate, to worship, to show her convictions, her faith. She desired to honor Jesus and so she did, with humility and firmness. Simon the Pharisee: he needed to reaffirm his ability to be a host, as pater familiae, as a wise and learned man of the law…and he

squandered the most important thing, which was to sincerely open himself to the Teacher, to receive him with love. But there is also Jesus:  he, too, needed something.  Jesus needed to teach about the kingdom of God; he needed to integrate, to include, to reconcile… those who for whatever reason had distanced themselves from one another.

Simon would remain surprised to see himself compared with a woman of doubtful reputation. And perhaps we also feel so confident in the doctrine of the god of consumption, of individualism, of apathy…that we imagine that the voice of prophesy cannot denounce our behavior as Jesus does with Simon. God is constantly sending us signals, showing us his will, to instruct us and to shake us up. Let us be like that woman: sincere, repentant, courageous, whose gesture of anointment gave her the initiative to begin a new stage in her life.

Prayer: God of goodness, grant that we may not be arrogant, but humble. May we be able to honor you during this Holy Week by following your example more closely through Jesus. Amen.

EL PODER DE UNGIR

Lucas 7:36-50

“Llorando, se arrojó a los pies de Jesús y comenzó a bañarlos con lágrimas y a secarlos con sus cabellos;

se los besaba, y los ungía con el perfume.”

Lucas 7:38

Este martes santo, en este episodio del evangelio, podemos recordar algo que fue crucial a lo largo de todo el ministerio de Jesús: conocía verdaderamente quiénes eran los que le rodeaban e impartía en ellos su don, según la necesidad de cada cual. Y este es un texto en el que es evidente la necesidad de cada personaje.

La mujer: necesitaba ser recibida, colaborar, adorar, mostrar su convicción, su fe. Es una mujer valiente que no se limita en seguir su objetivo sin importar el rechazo. Ella anhelaba honrar a Jesús y así lo hizo, con humildad y firmeza.

Simón el fariseo: necesitaba reafirmar su capacidad como anfitrión, como pater familiae, como hombre sabio y entendido de la ley… y descuidó lo más importante, abrirse sinceramente al Maestro, recibirle con amor.

Pero también está Jesús: él también necesitaba algo.  A Jesús le era necesario enseñar sobre el reino de Dios, necesitaba integrar, incluir, reconciliar… a quienes por alguna razón estaban distantes unos de otros.

Simón quedaría sorprendido al verse comparado con una mujer de dudosa reputación. Y también nosotros quizás nos sintamos tan confiados en la doctrina del dios del consumo, del individualismo, de la apatía… que imaginamos que la voz profética no puede denunciar nuestras conductas como hace Jesús con Simón. Dios constantemente nos envía señales, nos manifiesta su voluntad, que nos alecciona y nos estremece.

Seamos como aquella mujer, sincera, arrepentida, valiente, cuyo gesto de unción dio inicio para ella a una nueva etapa de su vida.

Oración: Dios bueno, que no seamos arrogantes sino humildes. Que en esta Semana Santa podamos honrarte siguiendo más de cerca tu ejemplo a través de Jesús. Amén.
