Jonah 2

“From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.”

Jonah 2:1

The story of the prophet Jonah has always been one of the most enigmatic for me.  He was a disobedient and stubborn character, who nevertheless taught us a life lesson so intense that it is practically impossible to avoid as the source of our spirituality. One of the most moving moments of the text is when Jonah prays to God from inside the belly of the fish.  That is where he recognizes the greatness of God and how his adverse circumstance is what restores his devotion to God. The belly of the fish can be a metaphor that speaks to us about those moments in life at which only the light of God can guide us, because darkness hovers on every side. It is in those moments that we feel most dependent on God, as we acknowledge our limitations and realize that our arrogance does not lead us to any good.

Like Jonah, we too can respond negatively to God’s call, but we should have enough discernment, and be truly humble, to admit the error we have committed. We should then commit ourselves into God’s hands, and allow him to be the one to deliver us from our darkness.

Prayer: God of mercy and goodness, hear our prayers and deliver us from the temptation of disobeying your call. Amen.

Sólo la luz de dios

“Entonces Jonás oró al Señor su Dios desde el vientre del pez”

La historia del profeta Jonás siempre ha sido una de las más enigmáticas para mí. Es un personaje desobediente y terco, y que sin embargo nos brinda una enseñanza de vida tan intensa que es prácticamente imposible eludirlo como fuente de nuestra espiritualidad. Uno de los momentos más emocionantes del texto es cuando Jonás ora a Dios desde el vientre del pez. Allí él reconoce la grandeza de Dios y cómo es la circunstancia adversa la que le devuelve su devoción a Dios.

El vientre del pez puede ser una metáfora que nos habla de los momentos de la vida en que sólo la luz de Dios puede guiarnos, pues la oscuridad se cierne por todos lados. Es en esos momentos cuando nos sentimos más dependientes de Dios, pues reconocemos nuestros límites y nos damos cuenta de que nuestras arrogancias no nos llevan a nada bueno.

Como Jonás, también podemos responder negativamente a Dios en su llamado, pero debemos tener también el suficiente discernimiento, y ser verdaderamente humildes para reconocer el error que hemos cometido. Luego, debemos entregarnos en manos de Dios, y dejar que él sea quien nos saque de nuestras oscuridades.

Oración: Dios de misericordia y bondad, escúchanos y guárdanos de caer en la tentación de no obedecer tu llamado. Amén.
