CALLED TO BE FREE

GALATIANS 5:1-15

“You, my brothers were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.”

Galatians 5:13

Managing our freedom is not at all easy. For now we are not even going to discuss how we limit the freedom of those around us, but rather how we limit ourselves from accomplishing this vocation from God to be free ourselves. It may be complicated to live our lives assuming responsibility for our actions.  This is why at times it may be preferable to follow a set of strict rules in order to declare ourselves “righteous” or “holy” before God.  However, instead of rules to apply, we should consider that it is the values of love, justice, peace, the ability to forgive and to reconcile…that are the true rules that Jesus taught us.  This pathway of making decisions, of assuming responsibility, burdened with challenges, allows us to conceive freedom as that wind from God that inspires us, that doesn’t hold us back, that refreshes us, that makes us act in a conscientious manner. Living in freedom allows us to express ourselves and to act as the Spirit moves us, according to the discernment that God has given us, and thus without censuring others or ourselves in our actions from one day to another.

“Where the Spirit of God abides, there is freedom” says the Holy Scripture, therefore freedom is one of the signs of God’s presence among us. Let us be free to serve, to love, to live in solidarity, to commit ourselves to just causes, challenging invalid limitations, and placing ourselves in God’s hands in order not to exceed those limits that could damage others.

Prayer: God of goodness, grant that we may always experience the freedom by which your Spirit invites us to live. Grant that we take your freedom to anyone who is enslaved as we once were. Amen.

LLAMADOS A LIBERTAD

GÁLATAS 5:1-15

“Hermanos, ustedes han sido llamados a la libertad,

sólo que no usen la libertad como pretexto;

más bien, sírvanse los unos a los otros por amor”

Gálatas 5:13

Manejar nuestra libertad no es nada fácil. No comentaremos ahora ni siquiera de qué manera limitamos la libertad de las personas que nos rodean, sino como nos limitamos de cumplir esta vocación de Dios de ser libres nosotros mismos. Quizás resulte complicado vivir nuestra vida tomando responsabilidad por nuestros actos. Por eso en ocasiones se pueda preferir seguir un conjunto de reglas estrictas para declararnos “justos”  o “santos” ante Dios. Sin embargo, más que reglas a aplicar debemos pensar que son los valores del amor, la justicia, la paz, la capacidad de perdonar y reconciliar… las verdaderas reglas que Jesús nos enseñó. Este camino de toma de decisiones, de responsabilidad, cargado de retos, nos permite concebir la libertad como ese viento de Dios que nos impulsa, que no nos detiene, que nos refresca, que nos hace actuar de manera consciente. Vivir en libertad nos permite expresarnos y actuar según el Espíritu nos invita, según el discernimiento que Dios nos ha dado, y de esa manera no censurar ni autocensurarnos en nuestras acciones del día a día. “Donde mora el Espíritu de Dios, allí hay libertad” dice la sagrada escritura, así que la libertad es uno de los signos de la presencia de Dios en medio nuestro. Seamos libres para servir, para amar, para solidarizarnos, para comprometernos con justas causas, desafiando límites caducos, y puestos en manos de Dios para no exceder los límites que dañen a otras personas.

Oración: Dios bueno, que siempre podamos vivir la libertad que tu Espíritu nos invita vivir. Llevemos tu liberación a quienes son esclavos como antes nosotros fuimos. Amén.
