RaHAB: THE WHORE

Little is
said about Rahab in the Church. Might this be because she was a prostitute?
Taboos still exist to some extent in the Church when it comes to discussing
topics related to sex or that touch upon the problematic of gender.
Rahab was a prostitute in the city of Jericho. She was nevertheless the woman who was able
to hide the explorers sent by Joshua. And not only did she hide them, but she
also made it possible for them to escape and evade those who were pursuing
them.
Rahab’s name is found in the genealogical tree of Jesus in the Gospel of
Matthew. The letters to the Hebrews and
from James also praise her actions. In other words, this woman shared her
gifts, thereby making her values evident in spite of the stigmas and errors,
and through her actions she made herself a useful part of God’s plans.
Due to prejudices and social discrimination, we are often incapable of
perceiving the gifts with which God has enabled certain persons, as well as
their role within God’s work. Who are we
to judge and to censure? God calls us to
love, to uphold, to work together…
Prayer: Beloved Father, free me this day from prejudice in order to be able to
accept all of your creatures that you have placed by my side. Amen.

La figura de Rajab es
poco tratada en la Iglesia. ¿Será acaso porque era una prostituta? De forma
general en la Iglesia aún existen tabúes al tratar temas relacionados con el
sexo o que aborden la problemática del género.
Rajab era una prostituta
en la ciudad de Jericó; sin embargo, fue la mujer que supo dar albergue a los
exploradores que envió Josué; y no sólo les dio albergue, sino que supo
orientarles la forma en que podían evadir a los que les perseguían.
El nombre de Rajab lo
encontramos en la lista del árbol genealógico de Jesús que nos presenta Mateo.
También en las cartas de Hebreos y Santiago se habla encomiásticamente de su
actuación. Es decir que esta mujer compartió sus dones, evidenció así sus
valores a pesar de estigmas y errores y con su actuación demostró ser útil en
los planes de Dios.
Muchas veces por
prejuicios y discriminaciones sociales, no somos capaces de percibir los dones
con que Dios ha capacitado a algunas personas, así como su papel en la obra
divina. ¿Quiénes somos para juzgar y censurar? Dios nos llama a amar, sostener,
colaborar…
Oración: Padre amado, líbrame en
este día de prejuicios para poder aceptar a todas las criaturas tuyas que has
puesto a mi lado. Amén
