Luke 24:36-49

He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?”

In this Gospel story written by Luke, the disciples confuse Jesus with a spirit or a ghost. The testimony of the two men on the road to Emmaus had not been enough; neither were their Teacher’s revealing words “Peace be with you!” when he appeared before them. They remained terrified and it was necessary to show them the physical signs of his torture so that they would pass from disbelief, due to fear, to disbelief  due to such a pleasant surprise.

Our interpretation of things that happen to us is often filtered by bad thoughts, suspicions, resentments…such that God’s blessing escapes us. It is true that in a world in which human relationships survive to the rhythm of betrayals, ambitions and blunders, we should always be on the alert and not be naïve. But it is also true that God’s blessing can be obvious and yet pass by us unnoticed because we consider it an illusion, a ghost, a spirit.

Let us spiritually open our eyes in order to recognize how great God is in our lives and in the history of our communities.  Let us spiritually open our eyes in order to be assured of God’s presence.  Even in our most difficult moments when, like the disciples, we are without resources or support or inner peace, God can appear from the depths to say to us:  Peace be with you!

Prayer: Blessed God, God of Life:  I praise you and glorify you because you appear before us in a clear manner, and thus make our spirituality grow.  Amen.

Pero Jesús les dijo: ¿Por qué se asustan?

¿Por qué dan cabida a esos pensamientos en su corazón?

En esta narración del evangelio de Lucas, los discípulos confunden a Jesús con un espíritu. No había bastado el testimonio de los caminantes a Emaús, ni las palabras reveladoras de la naturaleza de su Maestro “¡La paz sea con ustedes!” con que se presentaba ante ellos. Quedaron espantados y fue necesario que les mostrara los signos del escarnio para que pasaran de la incredulidad por miedo, a la incredulidad por tan grata sorpresa.

Cuántas veces nuestra interpretación de aquello que nos ocurre está filtrada por malos pensamientos, sospechas, resquemores… de tal manera que se nos escapa la bendición de Dios. Es cierto que en un mundo en el que las relaciones humanas sobreviven al ritmo de traiciones, ambiciones y traspiés, siempre debemos estar alertas y no pasar por ingenuos. Pero también es cierto que la bendición de Dios puede hacerse evidente y nosotros pasarla por alto al considerarla un espejismo, un fantasma, un espíritu.

Abramos espiritualmente nuestros ojos para reconocer cuán grande es Dios en nuestras vidas y la historia de nuestra comunidad. Abramos espiritualmente los ojos para tener certezas del acompañamiento de Dios. Aun en los momentos más difíciles en que, como los discípulos, nos hemos quedado sin referentes, ni sustento, o paz interior, Dios puede aparecer desde lo más profundo para decirnos ¡Paz a vosotros!

Oración: Dios bueno, Dios de la Vida: te alabo y te glorifico porque tú te nos muestras de forma nítida, y así haces crecer nuestra espiritualidad. Amén.
