DISPATCH AND SIGNS

Mark 16:14-18

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.”

1 Corinthians 4:20

Why does Mark so strongly emphasize the disciples’ lack of faith? First, he insists that faith in Jesus is passed on by the faith of those who bear witness to him.  Secondly, nobody should become discouraged when doubt arises in one’s heart. Even the eleven apostles had doubts!

After having criticized the lack of faith of the disciples, Jesus sends them out (v. 15) and gives them a list of signs that will bear witness to the gospel:  1) casting out demons, i.e., fighting against the power of evil that kills life; 2) speaking in new languages, i.e., communicating with others in a new way.  Sometimes we meet a person we’ve never seen before, but it seems that we have known one another for a long time. This is because we speak the same language, the language of love; 3) an antidote for poison: there are many things that poison our ability to live together.  Many schisms wreak havoc with relationships between people.  Living in the presence of God enables us to live above all of this and to obtain the antidote to this terrible poison; 4) healing the sick: wherever a clearer and livelier consciousness of God’s presence appears, there also appears a special care for those who are excluded and marginalized, especially toward people who are ill. What is most favorable to healing is when a sick person feels welcomed and loved.   

What signs do we have today that would be most convincing to others that the presence of Jesus is among us?

Prayer: Lord, tell us what signs to show so that the world can believe and be transformed.

ENVÍO Y SEÑALES

Marcos 16:14-18

¿Por qué Marcos insiste tanto en la falta de fe de los discípulos? Probablemente, para enseñar dos cosas. Primero, que la fe en Jesús pasa por la fe en las personas que dan testimonio de él. Segundo, que nadie debe desanimarse cuando la duda surge en el corazón. ¡Hasta los once discípulos tuvieron dudas!

Después de haber criticado la falta de fe de los discípulos, Jesús les envía (v. 15) y enumera las señales para testimoniar la buena noticia: 1) expulsar demonios, o sea, luchar en contra del poder del mal que mata la vida; 2) hablar lenguas nuevas, es decir, comunicarse con los demás de forma nueva. A veces encontramos a una persona que no hemos visto nunca antes, pero parece que la conocemos desde hace mucho tiempo. Es porque hablamos la misma lengua, el lenguaje del amor; 3) vencer el veneno: hay muchas cosas que envenenan la convivencia. Muchos chismes que causan estragos en la relación entre la gente. Quien vive la presencia de Dios vive por encima de todo esto y consigue que este veneno terrible no le moleste; 4) sanar a los enfermos: doquiera que aparece una conciencia más clara y más viva de la presencia de Dios, aparece también un cuidado especial con las personas excluidas y marginadas, sobre todo hacia los enfermos. Aquello que más favorece la curación es que la persona se siente acogida y amada.

¿Cuáles serían hoy las señales que más convencen a las personas de la presencia de Jesús en medio de nosotros?
