THE WRONG KIND OF GROWTH

Mark 12:38-44

“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them.”

Matthew 6:1

We do not always find a healthy growth within our churches, among the leadership and the congregations. In spite of the clear teaching and constant calling to humility in the gospels, and to not exalt ourselves, the inner sinfulness that often dominates us tends to make us pretentious and arrogant.  We then run the risk of trying to impose our criteria and reasoning, which are not always correct. We reject the positions of other people and consider them invalid.  And in many cases, we put our attitudes on pompous display with a tone of self-admiration.

The gospels remind us that anything that we do for self-praise or in search of personal recompense will not be honored by our heavenly Father. God wants us to pray in secret in our homes and not in front of others offering pretentious prayers that make the most recent newcomers feel incapable of uttering a single amen in public.  God wants for our charitable acts to go without public commentary or commendation, but rather to allow the beneficiaries to be those who give thanks to the Lord for having used us his instruments.

Growing in spirituality requires a high dose of material humility.  A high level of that type of spirituality is not reached by aspiring to public recognition or advantage or conveniences to accommodate our lives.  We must grow in the Spirit, following the example of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, remove my selfishness and the constant desire to stand out and to be praised by others.

No siempre encontramos un crecimiento sano dentro de las iglesias, dentro del liderazgo y de las congregaciones. A pesar de que la enseñanza es bien clara y el llamado constante en los evangelios es a la humildad, a no enaltecerse uno mismo, el pecado interno que muchas veces nos domina tiende a hacernos presuntuosos y arrogantes, entonces corremos el riesgo de pretender imponernos con nuestros criterios y razonamientos, no siempre acertados, de no aceptar las posiciones de otras personas por considerarlas no válidas y, en muchos casos, a hacer gala pomposa de nuestras actitudes con tono de auto-admiración.

Los evangelios nos recuerdan que nada de lo que hagamos en sentido de auto-alabanza y en busca de una recompensa personal será gratificado por nuestro Padre celestial. Dios espera que oremos en secreto en nuestras habitaciones y no delante de la gente haciendo oraciones rebuscadas que hacen que el más reciente congregado se sienta incapaz de proferir ni tan siquiera un amén en público; Dios espera que nuestras acciones caritativas no sean materia de comentarios para que otros reconozcan nuestras buenas acciones, sino dejar que sean los beneficiarios quienes den gracias al Señor por habernos utilizado como sus instrumentos.

Crecer en espiritualidad requiere una alta dosis de humildad material. No se alcanza un grado alto de ese tipo de espiritualidad aspirando a reconocimientos públicos y ventajas o bienestares con las que acomodar nuestra vida. Hay que crecer en el Espíritu, a la manera de Jesús.

Oración: Señor, aleja de mí el egoísmo y el deseo constante de sobresalir y ser alabado por los demás.
