THE BEST AND THE WORST

JAMES 3: 5-10

With the tongue we both bless the Lord and Father

and curse human beings made in God’s likeness.

James 3:9 CEB

There is a story about two travelers who arrived at a restaurant in town.  The first asked that he be served the best dish, the most exquisite dish that they had.  They brought him a plate of tongue.  The other traveler asked that they bring him the worst dish, the worst dish that they were able to make. He too got a serving of tongue.

The travelers exclaimed with surprise: “You served the same food as the best and the worst!”  The waiter explained to them: “There is nothing incongruent at all!  The tongue is the best and the worst. With the tongue we bless the Father and with the tongue we curse human beings.  We say good things and bad things.” 

This story makes me think of how many times, when I should have been quiet, have I used my tongue to curse, offend, harass, or abuse other people?  God asks us to keep our hearts clean of bitterness, envy, rivalry and falsehoods because out of the abundance of the heart comes life, our mouth speaks.

Prayer:  Help us, Father, so that love will prevail in our hearts and blessings for you and for our neighbor will always come out of our mouths.  Amen.

lo mejor y lo peor

Santiago 3:5-10

Con la lengua bendecimos al Dios Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los seres humanos que han sido creados a imagen de Dios.

Santiago 3:9

Cuenta una anécdota que dos viajeros llegaron a un restaurante del pueblo. El primero pidió que le sirvieran el plato mejor, el más exquisito que tuvieran. Le trajeron un plato de lengua. El otro viajero pidió que le trajeran el plato más malo, el peor de que dispusieran e igualmente le sirvieron una ración de lengua.

Los viajeros exclamaron con asombro: ¡Ustedes sirven la misma comida como la mejor y la peor!

El sirviente les explicó: No hay ninguna incongruencia. La lengua es lo mejor y lo peor. Con ella bendecimos al Padre y con ella maldecimos a los seres humanos. Hablamos cosas buenas y decimos cosas malas.

Esta historia me hace pensar en cuentas veces, pudiendo haberme callado, use mi lengua para maldecir, para ofender, para hostigar, o para abusar de otras personas. Dios nos pide que mantengamos limpios nuestros corazones de amarguras, envidias, rivalidades y falsedades porque de la abundancia del corazón mana la vida, habla nuestra boca.

Oración: Ayúdanos, Padre, para que el amor prevalezca en nuestros corazones y que siempre salgan de nuestra boca, bendiciones para ti y para nuestro prójimo. Amén.
