SHARING THE PERFUME

JOHN 12:1-11

Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume;

she poured it on Jesus’s feet and wiped his feet with her hair.

The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.    (NIV)

What a gesture was that of Mary to bathe Jesus’s feet with a costly perfume! I understand this action to be one of total dedication and faithfulness to the Nazarene. Mary was captive of an emotional outburst wherein the calculation of the cost of the perfume was secondary to the desire to show her devotion to the Son of God.

She poured all the perfume, keeping no part for herself.  She gave everything to Jesus.

By this gesture we’re invited to break all the emotional ties and be free to glorify our Lord, giving the maximum of ourselves. We have received an enormous vial of gifts that we can use to bring those who are in the desolation of their spiritual and physical lives closer to the presence of God. If not shared, these gifts are ruined and atrophy. The more we share the perfume of the gifts and the good news of Jesus with our fellow man, the more we will be perfumed by his presence in us.

The blessing of this sharing of our talents is that there’s no danger of impoverishment, just the opposite; there will be a growth of our abilities.

Prayer:  Jesus, today I will free myself from those ties that don’t allow me to glorify your name and serve you with my life. Amen.

COMPARTIENDO EL PERFUME

JUAN 12:1-11

María trajo unos trescientos gramos de perfume 

de nardo puro, muy caro, y perfumó los pies de Jesús;

luego se los secó con sus cabellos.

 Y toda la casa se llenó del aroma del perfume.

Juan 12:3

¡Qué gesto el de María! Echar un perfume costoso a los pies de Jesús. Entiendo en esta acción una entrega total y fidelidad al Nazareno. María fue presa de un arrebato emotivo donde el cálculo del costo del perfume queda en segundo plano delante del deseo de mostrar su devoción al Hijo de Dios.

Echó todo el perfume, no se guardó una parte para sí. Dio todo para Jesús.

En este gesto nos está invitando a romper las ataduras emocionales y ser libres para glorificar a nuestro Señor dando lo máximo de nosotros. Recibimos un enorme frasco de dones que los podemos usar para acercar la presencia de Dios a aquellos que están en la desolación du su vida espiritual y física. Estos dones recibidos si no son compartidos se estropean y atrofian. Cuanto más compartimos con nuestros semejantes el perfume de los dones y la buena noticia de Jesús, más seremos perfumados por su presencia en nosotros. Lo bueno de este compartir de nuestros talentos es que no hay peligro de empobrecimiento, sino todo lo contrario, habrá un crecimiento de nuestras capacidades.

Oración: Jesús, hoy me libraré de aquellas ataduras que no me dejan glorificar tu nombre y servirte con mi vida. Amén.
