OBEYING THE LAWS

DEUTERONOMY 4:25-40

Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.

If each of us, citizens of the country we live in, would just obey the laws as they were written, things might go much better. In general, we humans are somewhat recalcitrant about laws and especially about obeying them. We think that they were written for somebody else, because many of them are heavy impositions that curtail our freedom, or at least we see it that way.

Therefore, and because the people of Israel were not so different from us, Moses insisted and reminded them that they had to keep their part of the covenant. If they did so, it would go well with them and their well-being would be assured for all time.

God’s law is the Gospel; in other words, the law of loving God and our neighbor is a law that seeks our own well-being. It is a law that ensures us a life filled with fellowship, respect, solidarity, commitment, and freedom.

Prayer: Lord, you fulfill your part of the covenant and today you invite us to fulfill our part, knowing that if we do it we will be able to live the Good News of your kingdom here and now. Amen.

CUMPLIENDO CON LAS LEYES

DEUTERONOMIO 4:25-40

Cumplan sus leyes y mandamientos que yo les doy en este día, y les irá bien a ustedes y a sus descendientes, y vivirán muchos años en el país que el Señor su Dios les va a dar para siempre.

Si simplemente  cada uno de nosotros, ciudadanos del  país en que vivimos, cumpliéramos las leyes tal y como fueron escritas, posiblemente las cosas irían mucho mejor. Mayoritariamente, los seres humanos somos bastante reacios a las leyes y sobre todo a cumplir con ellas. En general, pensamos que las leyes fueron escritas para ser cumplidas por otros, porque en realidad muchas de ellas son imposiciones pesadas que coartan nuestra libertad, o al menos creemos eso.

Por eso, y porque el pueblo de Israel  no era muy diferente del nuestro, es que Moisés insiste y les recuerda que deben cumplir con su parte del pacto. Si cumplen entonces todo saldrá bien y tendrán asegurado su bienestar para siempre.

La ley de Dios es el evangelio; es decir, la ley del amor a Dios y del amor al prójimo, es una ley que busca nuestro propio bienestar. Es una ley que  nos asegura una vida plena de convivencia, de respeto, de solidaridad, de entrega y libertad.

Oración: Señor, tú cumples con tu parte del pacto y hoy nos invitas a cumplir con la nuestra, sabiendo que si cumplimos podremos vivir la Buena Nueva de tu Reino ya y ahora. Amén.
