SELL THE SOUL?
MarK
8:31-38
What good is it for someone
to gain the whole world, yet forfeit
their soul?
Mark 8:36 (NIV)
In this fragment from the Gospel we find one of the commonest of
everyday situations: the dilemma of deciding correctly what we should do or say.
This would imply the “filter” of the Christian ethic, i.e., the capacity to
respond according to God’s will. Although the situation is common, it is still
complicated. Making the right decisions means sacrificing pretensions of prophesy,
as Jesus clarified to Peter when Peter tried to discourage him from being so hard
and direct in his words. Jesus rebuked Peter and taught a serious lesson to Peter
and the rest of his disciples.
The quoted text reminds me of the dilemma of Faust, the
character in a famous German work who sells his soul to Mephistopheles, a
symbol of temptation, to achieve what he could not get on his own. This is what
is commonly referred to as “selling one’s soul to the devil.”
Today’s message is an invitation to practice what we preach, and
not yield for reasons of convenience to proposals that deny the message of
redemption and freedom that God has revealed to us through Jesus.
Prayer: Our
God, we want to respond with commitment and passion to your call to build your
kingdom in this world. Help us not to yield to the temptation to respond to
other appeals for reasons of convenience or stability. Amen.

¿VENDER
EL ALMA?
Marcos
8:31-38
Porque ¿de qué le aprovechará al
hombre
ganar todo el mundo si pierde su
alma?
Marcos 8:36
