PEOPLE DO NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE

MATTHEW 4:1- 4

Jesus replied, “It’s written, people won’t live only by bread, but by every word spoken by God.”

Matthew 4:4 (CEB)

            If God so arranged it, we would be able to live without bread the way Jesus did for 40 days.  But we are not able to live without his Word.  By this Word we were created and only through it are we able to be protected in life, because God sustains all things with the Word of his power.  The bread is a secondary cause, the same Lord is the principal cause of our sustenance.  God can work either with or without a second cause, and we do not have to subject him to a way of operating.

            Let’s not have too much desire for what is visible but let us look to the invisible God.  We have heard believers say that in extreme poverty, when there is a lack of bread, also they have lost their appetite, and others have said that when daily provisions were lacking, the Lord sent them unexpected help. 

            But it is crucial that we hold on to the Word of the Lord.  Only with the Word are we able to resist.  All the books and all the preachers in the world cannot provide us with our main meal:  only the Word of God can fill the believer.

Prayer:  Lord, give us always this bread.  We appreciate it more than the delights of a regal table.  Amen.

NO SOLO DE PAN VIVE EL HOMBRE

MATEO 4:1- 4

Él respondió y dijo: escrito está: No sólo de pan vivirá el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios.

Mateo 4:4

              Si Dios así lo dispusiera podríamos vivir sin pan, como lo hizo Jesús por cuarenta días. Pero no podríamos vivir sin su Palabra. Por esa Palabra fuimos creados y solamente por ella podemos ser guardados en vida, porque Él sostiene todas esas cosas con la Palabra de su potencia. El pan es la causa segunda, el mismo Señor es la causa primera de nuestro sostenimiento. Él puede obrar sin segunda causa tanto como con ella, y no tenemos que sujetarle a un modo de proceder.

              No tengamos demasiado deseo de lo visible, miremos al Dios invisible. Hemos oído a creyentes decir que, en la extremada pobreza, cuando escaseaba el pan, también les faltaba el apetito; y a otros que cuando las provisiones ordinarias faltaron, el Señor les envió socorro inesperable.

              Pero es preciso que nos aferremos a la Palabra del Señor. Solamente con ella podemos resistir. Todos los libros y todos los predicadores en el mundo no pueden proveernos de una sola comida: solamente la Palabra de Dios puede llenar al creyente.

Oración: Señor, danos siempre este pan. Lo apreciamos más que los deleites de una mesa regia. Amén.
