CERTAINTY AND
CONVICTION
HEBREWS 11:1-2;
12: 1-2
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the
conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 (NRSV)
In a
meeting for Bible study at an international conference, participants were asked
to write on large sheets of paper the names of people they considered to be
heroes of the faith, in the style of those mentioned by the author of the
epistle to the Hebrews. The result could not have been more impressive and
motivating.
On those
large sheets of paper placed on the walls, the names of famous or significant
people appeared (such as Calvin, Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu). But along
with so many of these names there were also placed numerous examples of what
someone can personally mean in our own pilgrimage of faith. Thus, some wrote:
my grandmother, my mother, the missionary who accepted me in the school…
Daily a
great cloud of witnesses continues to surround us. They have given us living
signs of hope in the Lord with the conviction that God accompanies, guides and
sustains his people. That same faith should encourage us, that great cloud of
witnesses should serve, stimulate and
fortify us so that in their turn our names can be included by others in their
lists of heroes of the faith.
Prayer: Lord, remind us of how many people have fed our Christian
life. We pray for the strength needed for us also to be an example for many. Amen.

CERTEZA Y CONVICCION
HEBREOS 11:1-2; 12: 1-2
Es pues la fe la certeza de
lo que se espera, la convicción de lo que no se ve.
Hebreos 11:1
En una reunión de
estudio bíblico en el marco de una Conferencia Internacional, se les pidió a
los participantes escribir en unos papelógrafos los nombres de personas que
consideraban héroes de la fe, al estilo de los mencionados por el autor de la
epístola a los hebreos. El resultado no pudo ser menos que impresionante y
motivador.
En aquellas grandes
hojas de papel colocadas en las paredes, aparecieron nombres de personajes
famosos o significativos (como Calvino, Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu), pero
junto a tantos de estos nombres fueron también colocados numerosos ejemplos de
lo que en lo personal puede alguien significar en el peregrinaje de la fe de
cada uno de nosotros; así algunos escribieron: mi abuela, mi madre, el
misionero que me aceptó en la escuela…
Una grande nube de
testigos sigue rodeándonos a diario, ellas y ellos han dado muestras vivas de
la esperanza en el Señor, con la convicción de que Dios acompaña a su pueblo,
le guía y le sostiene. Y esa misma fe debe alentarnos, esa gran nube de
testigos debe servirnos de estímulo y fortaleza, para que a su vez nuestros
nombres puedan ser incluidos por otros dentro de sus listas de héroes de la fe.
Oración: Recordamos, Señor, a tantas personas que han alimentado nuestra vida
cristiana. Rogamos por la fortaleza necesaria para ser también nosotros ejemplo
para muchos. Amén.
