A SACRIFICE FOR LOVE

Philippians 2: 6-11

And he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even on a cross!

Philippians 2:8 (NIV)

There has been much speculation about the fate of Jesus and the cross. There are those who have said that it was all God’s plan from beginning to end, just as it happened. But do we really imagine and worship such a God? A God who is capable of sending his only Son to die in the most terrible way: what kind of mother or father can that be? Who can be capable of sending a beloved person to that type of punishment?

I certainly cannot imagine something like that. Yes, I can believe that Jesus was taken to the cross because of the wickedness of humanity. The Pharisees and the other religious leaders of his time saw Him as a threat. He was destroying the reputation of this group by showing compassion for those who were considered human refuse.

This represents a great challenge for those of us intent on following Him, because it shows us that we must be consistent with our ideals of justice and equity, even if it implies great sacrifice. It obliges us to give our lives if necessary and to collaborate with the life project of those who are less favored by the structures imposed by our society.

 

Prayer: God of love, help us to follow the example of Jesus, learning to give our lives as needed for goodness and justice. Amen.

SACRIFICIO POR AMOR

Filipenses 2: 6-11

Y se humilló a sí mismo, obedeciendo hasta la muerte y muerte de cruz.

Filipenses 2:8

Mucho se ha especulado sobre el destino de Jesús y la cruz. Hay quienes han dicho que todo era un plan de Dios desde el comienzo hasta el final, tal y como sucedió. Pero ¿realmente nos imaginamos y adoramos a un Dios así? Un Dios que es capaz de enviar a su único Hijo a morir de la manera más terrible, ¿qué clase de madre o padre puede ser? ¿Quién puede ser capaz de enviar a la persona amada a un castigo de este tipo?

Sin dudas no puedo imaginarme algo así. Sí puedo creer que Jesús fue llevado a la cruz a causa de la maldad humana. Los fariseos y demás líderes religiosos de su tiempo vieron en Él una amenaza. Estaba destruyendo la reputación de este grupo, mostrando compasión por aquellas personas que eran consideradas deshechos humanos.

Esto represente un gran reto para quienes intentamos seguirle, pues nos muestra que debemos ser consecuentes con nuestros ideales de justicia y equidad aunque ello implique grandes sacrificios. Nos obliga a entregar la vida si es necesario y colaborar con el proyecto de vida de las personas que son menos favorecidas por las estructuras que impone nuestra sociedad.

 

Oración: Dios de amor, permite que podamos seguir el ejemplo de Jesús, aprendamos a dar hasta nuestra vida si es necesario por el bien y la justicia. Amén.
