GOD EXALTS WITH HUMILITY

Luke 18: 9-14

But the tax collector stood at a distance.  He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” (NIV)

Luke 18:13

That his children exalt themselves is not to God’s liking. We must not lose sight of the fact that we are all fragile and imperfect creatures in the eyes of God, the most high. We still have a lot to do; We still have a lot to think about and a lot to talk about. Despite this, God continues to be the same until eternity.

The value of recognizing our faults and honest repentance is the attitude expected of every Christian. Jesus always chose this type of behavior, as well as supporting the most vulnerable. For the publican, neither raising his eyes to heaven nor beating his chest was worth it if one did not have sincere repentance.

Lent is the perfect path to reflect on who we are and what our relationship has been with the God who is our daily companion. It is not worthy of us to walk through Lent with pride and vainglory, but to clad ourselves in justice and humility. Lent has no reason to exist if we persist in distance from the God who exalts the “humiliated.” May God see in our eyes the simplicity of our faith! May we feel in our beating chest the need for his forgiveness! Let him hear faithfulness in the security of our imperfect words!

 

Prayer: We come to you, Lord, with our hearts repentant. We wish to be faithful to the ethical values of your Kingdom: that our eyes can always look at you with humility and simple faith. Thank you for being conducive to our lives! In the name of Christ, Amen.

MARZO 9, SABADO

DIOS ENALTECE CON HUMILDAD

Lucas 18: 9-14

Mas el publicano, estando lejos no quería ni aun alzar los ojos al cielo, sino que se golpeaba el pecho, diciendo: Dios, sé propicio a mí, pecador.

No es del agrado de Dios que sus hijas/os se enaltezcan por sí solos. No se debe perder de vista que todos somos criaturas frágiles e imperfectas ante los ojos del Altísimo: mucho nos falta por hacer; mucho nos falta por pensar y mucho nos falta por hablar. - A pesar de ello- Dios continúa siendo el mismo hasta la eternidad.

El valor del reconocimiento de nuestras faltas y el arrepentimiento honesto, es la actitud que se espera de cada cristiano/a. Jesús siempre apostó por este tipo de conductas, así como por el apoyo a los más vulnerables. Para el publicano, ni alzar los ojos al cielo ni golpearse el pecho valían la pena si no se tiene un arrepentimiento sincero.

Cuaresma es el sendero perfecto para reflexionar en quiénes somos y cuál ha sido nuestra relación con el Dios acompañante del día a día. No es digno caminar la Cuaresma con orgullo y vanagloria sino vestirse de justicia y humildad. Cuaresma no tiene razón de ser si persistimos en la lejanía del Dios que enaltece al ‘humillado’. ¡Qué Dios vea en nuestros ojos la sencillez de nuestra fe! ¡Qué sienta en nuestros golpes de pecho la necesidad de su perdón! ¡Qué escuche fidelidad en la seguridad de nuestras palabras imperfectas!

 

Oración: Venimos a Ti, Señor, con nuestros corazones arrepentidos. Deseamos ser fieles a los valores éticos de tu Reino: que nuestros ojos puedan mirarte siempre con humildad y fe sencilla. ¡Gracias por ser propicio a nuestras vidas! En el nombre de Cristo, Amén.
