THE LIGHT OUT OF BETHLEHEM
MiCAH 5:1-6
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are small among the clans of Judah,
Out of you will come for me
One who will be ruler over Israel,
Whose origins are from of old,
From ancient times.”
Micah 5:2
Prophets such as Micah are often overlooked by us and are only barely
recalled by some for their most memorable verses. Such is the case with the
prophesy concerning the messianic birth in Bethlehem, a village so small that
it meant little in the setting of the first century when Jesus was born. Nevertheless, in addition to this important
announcement, Micah represents a true prophetic treasure. It is important to point out that the person
who announced Bethlehem’s prominence was also the one to denounce the profound
oppression of the poor, the one who predicted that swords would become ploughs,
he who dreamt that we could live in peace and without fear under our own
‘vineyard and fig tree,’ he who said “The Lord will be my light”…
Today when we commit ourselves to the announcement of the birth of Jesus,
we are indebted in large measure to recall that this announcement is made
together with a declaration of justice, peace, harmony in God, the ability to
receive and follow the light of God as well as following the lights that God
offers us to enlighten our way.
Let us be announcers of the bursting forth of God’s righteous kingdom in
history, and let us at the same time acknowledge that this is a path as filled
with commitments and stumbling blocks as it is with assurance and hope.
Prayer: God of life, give us
the love we need to transmit your message of salvation to all those around us. Amen.
La
luz desde Belén
Miqueas
5:1-6
“De ti (Belén) me saldrá el
que será Señor de Israel, y sus salidas son desde el principio, desde los días
de la eternidad”
Miqueas 5:2
En
muchas ocasiones profetas como Miqueas quedan olvidados por nosotros y se
recuerdan apenas por algunos de sus versículos más memorables. Tal es el caso
de la profecía que ubica el nacimiento mesiánico en Belén, una aldea tan
pequeña que no significaba mucho en el escenario del siglo I donde naciera
Jesús. Sin embargo, además de este importante anuncio, Miqueas representa un
verdadero tesoro profético. Es digno señalar que este quien anunciara la
prominencia de Belén, también fue quien denunció la opresión profunda a los
pobres, fue quien auguró que las espadas se convertirían en arados, fue quien
soñó que podríamos vivir en paz y sin temor bajo “nuestra vid e higuera”, fue
quien dijo “Jehová será mi luz”…
En gran medida nosotros al comprometernos hoy con
el anuncio del nacimiento de Jesús, también debemos recordar que este anuncio
va acompañado del reclamo de la justicia, la paz, la armonía en Dios, la
capacidad de recibir y seguir la luz de Dios así como el seguimiento de las
luces que Dios nos ofrece para iluminar nuestro camino.
Seamos anunciadores y anunciadoras de la irrupción
del reino justo de Dios en la historia, y a la vez reconozcamos que este es un
camino lleno de compromisos y tropiezos, como de certidumbres y esperanzas.
Oración:
Dios de la vida, danos el amor y la capacidad necesarias para transmitir tu
mensaje de salvación a todos los que nos rodean. Amén.
