MATTHEW 15:1-20

 

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.  Sing and make music in your

heart to the Lord…”

Ephesians 5:19

 

When the author of the letter to the Ephesians makes certain suggestions for those wanting to be called “sons of light” and to have the certainty of being filled with the Holy Spirit, he alludes to the manner in which we should communicate with one another.  It becomes a real challenge to make every word that we pronounce also praise God, as not all situations in life lend themselves to that.  But we should be very clear that we must create a discipline, an ethic of  “good speech” that leaves out words of cursing or swearing or obscenities… which are many of the vices that restrict today’s interpersonal relationships.

 

Jesus himself warned about the importance of what we say, more so than any ritual action that may result external or even hypocritical.   Later the Apostle James would warn about the intensity of the things that we can unleash through what we say, good as well as bad.

 

We live in a society that needs to be illuminated by the light of Jesus Christ.  This light should be contained within our words, such that, today and always, we will pronounce words of blessing. May our voices speak encouragement and hope to those around us.  May our new way of living in Christ also be made visible through words of affirmation and comfort.

 

Prayer: God of life, grant that our words, or gestures, our entire lives be a pleasing praise to you. Amen.

 

Lo que sale de nuestra boca

 

MATEO 15:1-20

y cánticos espirituales, cantando y alabando

 al Señor en vuestros corazones”

Efesios 5:19

 

El autor de la carta a los efesios cuando hace ciertas sugerencias para poder ser llamados “hijos de luz” y tener la certeza de estar llenos del Espíritu Santo, alude a cómo nos debemos comunicar los unos con los otros. Resulta un verdadero reto el que toda palabra que pronunciemos sea también una alabanza a Dios, pues no todas las situaciones de la vida son propicias para ello. Pero sí debemos tener muy claro que hay que crear una disciplina, una ética del “buen decir” que deje fuera las palabras de maldición, las calumnias, las obscenidades… que son muchos de los vicios que hoy limitan una adecuada relación interpersonal.

El propio Jesús advertía acerca de la importancia de aquello que decimos, por encima de cualquier acto ritual que pueda resultar externo y hasta hipócrita. Más tarde el apóstol Santiago advertiría sobre cuán grandes cosas podemos desatar a partir de lo que decimos, tanto buenas como malas.

Vivimos en una sociedad necesitada de ser iluminada por la luz de Jesucristo. Esta luz debe estar contenida en nuestras palabras, así que, en el día de hoy y siempre, pronunciemos palabras de bendición. Que nuestra voz sea de aliento y esperanza a los que nos rodean. Que nuestra nueva manera de vivir en Cristo se haga visible también a través de frases de afirmación y consuelo.

 

Oración: Dios de la vida, que nuestras palabras, nuestros gestos, nuestra vida toda, sea una alabanza agradable a ti. Amén.
