                                 LIVING TOGETHER IS THE BEST WAY TO LIVE

                                                            PHILIPPIANS 4: 1-7  

                                               Bear one another’s burdens, in this way

                                                    you will fulfill the law of Christ.                         Galatians 6:2

One of the greatest virtues of the Pauline Letters is Paul’s eternal sense of presence, of daily life. Problems are situations repeated daily in our congregations and our lives. Euodia and Syntchye were hardworking sisters, but two classic examples of “bosses” within the church. Their faults didn’t consist of having different opinions; rather, it lay in the total absence of tolerance, their lack of firm support for harmony. For his part Clement was a good consecrated Christian, but he had to spend his time arbitrating between the already mentioned opponents. He was the brother who both suffered and helped the most.

The call to Christian fellowship appears among the recommendations the Apostle makes to the church; an excellent pathway to congregational peace. Of course there are exceptions: Herod and Pilot became friends through Jesus’ death. (Luke 23:12)

Paul summarizes his recommendations with two conclusive affirmations. The names are written in the Book of Life, “the Lord is near”. In the Old Testament the well-known Book of Covenants was law. The second affirmation is the eminent return of Christ; it was the expression among Christians that reanimated and affirmed faith. We are one in Christ.

Do we coexist today at the height of Pauline demand?

Sobrellevad los unos las cargas de los otros

y cumplid así la ley de Cristo.

Una de las grandes virtudes de las Cartas Paulinas es su eterna actualidad. Los problemas son situaciones que se repiten a diario en la vida de nuestras congregaciones y nuestra existencia. Evodia y Sinteque eran dos hermanas muy trabajadoras, pero dos clásicas “caciques” dentro de la Iglesia. Sus faltas no estaban en tener diferentes opiniones, sino en la ausencia total de tolerancia, el soporte más firme de la armonía.

Por su parte estaba Clemente un buen cristiano consagrado, pero que tenía que gastar su tiempo en servir de “árbitro” entre los ya mencionados contrincantes. Fue el hermano que más sufrió y más ayudó.

El llamado al gozo cristiano aparece entre las recomendaciones que el Apóstol hace a la Iglesia, un excelente camino para la paz congregacional. Desde luego que han existido excepciones. Herodes y Pilato volvieron a ser amigos por la muerte de Jesús. (Lucas 23:12)

Pablo resume sus recomendaciones con dos afirmaciones contundentes. Los nombres están escritos en el Libro de Vida, “el Señor está cerca”. En el Antiguo Testamento estaba vigente el Libro del Pacto bien conocido. La segunda afirmación es la eminente venida de Cristo. Era la consigna entres los cristianos, que les hacía renovar el ánimo y afirmar la fe. Somos uno en Cristo.

¿Convivimos hoy en nuestras Iglesias a la altura de la demanda paulina?
