                                       TO BE REMEMBERED WITH HONOR
                                                    1 CHRONICLES 29: 26-30
Thus David, son of Jesse, ruled over all Israel

                                                                                                                      1 Chronicles 29:26

David is one of those passionate characters who appear in the Bible. He is perhaps the preeminent figure that could be most extensively studied in terms of his behavior, not only for his protagonist role in many stories, but also for the intensity and complexity of his life as son, friend, king, husband, and father. Something singular about David are his distinct portrayals in the books of Kings and Chronicles.  Kings, the first, is direct and clear in presenting a simple yet perspicacious David, just at times, while unjust at others; patriotic on occasion, mercenary on others; exemplary in spirit, and at the same time a sinner…so we see through David’s example that complexity is a trait common to all human beings. Nevertheless, the portrait the book of 1 Chronicles presents to us is surprising since his virtues are extolled while no mention of his faults is made at all. This may be explained by the fact that Chronicles was redacted much later than Kings, whose events took place in a moment of Israel’s history in which it was necessary to extol his national identity and strengthen his image in face of the challenges of the dispersion.  This explains David overall as an example to follow, someone unblemished.
By the grace of God our lives – despite their being as full of both negative and positive nuances such as David’s – will transcend via our good works, our devotion to God, our simplicity and capacity to sincerely repent on recognizing our errors. Let’s put ourselves in God’s hands to be shining examples to those who surround us, and thus guide them to Him who is the light of the world, Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ.

Prayer:  Gracious God, we want to draw closer to you in devotion and holiness. Give us clean hearts, not by our merit, rather to honor and adore you. Amen.
