THE SEEN AND UNSEEN
MATTHEW 6: 19-21
For where
your treasure is, there will your heart be also
Matthew 6: 21ª
A young girl in Africa gave her teacher a birthday present, a
beautiful conch.
“Where did you find it?” asked the teacher.
The girl said that these shells were only found on a certain
distant beach. The teacher was profoundly moved because she knew the girl would
have had to walk many kilometers in search of the shell.
“You shouldn’t have traveled such a distance only to find me a
present,” she commented.
The girl smiled and answered, “Teacher, the long walk is part of
the present.”
The girl in this story knew quite well what it means to give a something of value to another person. In our lives, apart from material things which have obvious
value, we must also value those gifts God gives us, as many times these are the
most important.
Jesus teaches us in his Sermon on the Mount that wherever we
cast our gaze – our emphasis in life – there will be our true essence. Therefore,
the conch as well as the search for it would have value for us, although the
latter’s value may not be so apparent at first. For us a love poem, as well as
the inspired nights that gave it birth would have value for us; or the unassuming
drawing of a child as well as the love with which it’s presented.
May we learn to value both their plain value, and also the love,
sacrifice, and devotion that’s concealed in them.
Prayer: Lord, help us to
recognize the essences of things and not to judge by appearances. Amen.

que se ve y lo que no
Mateo 6:19-21
Pues donde esté tu tesoro, allí estará también tu
corazón.
Mateo 6:21
Una niña en África le dio a su maestra un regalo de
cumpleaños. Era un hermoso caracol.
“¿Dónde lo encontraste?”, preguntó la maestra.
La niña le dijo que esos caracoles se hallan solamente en cierta playa
lejana. La maestra se conmovió profundamente porque sabía que la niña había
caminado muchos kilómetros para buscar el caracol.
“No debiste haber ido tan lejos sólo para buscarme un regalo”, comentó.
La niña sonrió y contestó: “Maestra, la larga caminata es parte del
regalo”.
La niña de esta historia sabía muy bien qué significa entregar a otra
persona algo muy valioso. En nuestra vida, además de las cosas materiales, que
tienen un valor evidente, también debemos valorar aquellos regalos que Dios nos
da, y que muchas veces son lo más importante.
Jesús en su Sermón del Monte nos enseñó que donde pongamos nuestra mirada,
nuestro énfasis en la vida, esa será nuestra verdadera esencia. Así que,
valdría para nosotros tanto el caracol como el camino recorrido, aunque este
último no se haga evidente a simple vista.
Valdría para nosotros tanto un poema de amor, como las noches de
inspiración que lo vieron nacer. Valdría para nosotros tanto el sencillo dibujo
de un niño, como el amor con que lo entrega.
Aprendamos a valorar las cosas por lo que resulta evidente y también por
todo el amor, sacrificio y entrega que oculta.
Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a reconocer las esencias de las
cosas y no juzgar por las apariencias. Amén.
