TO CAESAR WHAT IS
CAESAR’S
MATTHEW 22: 15-22
And I say to you, give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s
and unto God what is God’s Matthew 22:21
Jesus’ answers to his adversaries always testified to his divine
wisdom, but this passage in particular is a complete treatise on how to
correctly respond to the provocations, the intentions (or temptations) of those
who would make us stumble and fall. The Pharisees intended to “trip up Jesus in
something he said” by presenting him with a hypocritical discourse of feigned
communion with the Master. They thought the game was supposedly won when they
asked him about the tribute owed Caesar, thinking that if Jesus answered
positively he would appear to be a traitor to his people; and if he answered
negatively he would be guilty of rebellion against the Roman authorities who
had the power to exact the harshest punishment on insubordinates. But Jesus
responded wisely and simply; the Imperial coin – the artifice with which the
Pharisees were attempting to trick Jesus – was never a patrimony of the Jewish
people, therefore “returning it” to Caesar as a tax implied nothing. And again,
in this reply Jesus artfully demonstrated his prophetic mastery, making it
clear that Caesar is not God, as the Romans had intended to
impose.
Our answers to cunning questions or situations should be like
Jesus’: natural, sincere, and direct, although they may seem forceful (“Why do
you tempt me, hypocrites?”). And our replies should also be marked by the
prophetic sense that denounces the injustice that attempts to establish itself
as law (Caesar is not God!). Go forth, then, on your way with a kindly word for
those in need, and with a prophetic word for those who would trip us up on our
journey towards the abundance of God’s kingdom.
Prayer: Lord, give us precise
words for precise moments. Keep us from falling into temptation and deliver us from evil. For your glory and
honor. Amen.

Mateo 22:15-22
Y les dijo: dad, pues, a César lo que es de César,
Jesus’ y a Dios lo que es de Dios. Mateo 22:21
Las respuestas de Jesús a sus oponentes siempre
evidenciaban la sabiduría divina en él, pero este pasaje en particular es todo
un tratado de cómo responder acertadamente a las provocaciones o las
intenciones (o tentaciones) de hacernos caer. Los fariseos tenían la intención
de “sorprender a Jesús en alguna palabra”, y se presentan con un discurso
hipócrita de supuesta comunión con el Maestro. Al preguntarle sobre el tributo
a César supuestamente tenían la pelea ganada: si Jesús respondía que sí,
aparecería como un traidor ante su pueblo; y si decía que no, se haría culpable
de rebeldía ante las autoridades romanas capaces de aplicar sobre los
insubordinados la más pesada ley. Pero Jesús respondió, en primer lugar, de
manera sabia y sencilla: lo acuñado por el imperio nunca fue patrimonio del
pueblo judío, por lo tanto nada implica “devolverlo”. Y por otra parte, con
esta respuesta Jesús hace gala, entre líneas, de su maestría profética dejando
claro que César no es Dios, como pretendían imponer los romanos.
Nuestras respuestas ante las preguntas o situaciones caprichosas deben ser
como las de Jesús: naturales, sinceras, directas, aunque puedan parecer fuertes
(“¿por qué me tentáis, hipócritas?”). Y también deben estar nuestras respuestas
marcadas por el sentido profético, que denuncia la injusticia que trata de
establecerse como ley (¡César no es Dios!). Salgamos al camino con una palabra
de aliento para el necesitado y con palabra profética para quienes pretendan
hacernos tropezar en nuestro transitar hacia la plenitud del reino de Dios.
Oración: Señor, danos palabras precisas para momentos precisos. No nos permitas
caer ante la tentación y líbranos del mal, para tu gloria y honra, amén.
