ABIDE IN MY LOVE
JOHN 15:9-17
In this is love, not that we loved God but he loved us
and sent his son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:10
In this culture when we say to someone “I love you,”
generally speaking we mean “I love you for me”.
After that point begins the manipulation to possess the other person.
But it’s quite another thing to be willing to sacrifice ourselves through our
love of another person. This makes me think that not everyone understands the
same thing when we speak about love.
The criterion to love in the Old Testament was: Love your neighbor as yourself.
(Leviticus 19:18) but now Jesus says to his followers: Love one another as I have loved you; and this love consists of
giving up our lives for our friends. It speaks of a free and creative love we
are not always prepared or willing to practice, despite calling ourselves
Christians.
Thomas said to his fellow disciples: Let’s go as well, that we may die with him.
But Thomas was far from gladly accepting this sacrifice. Peter said: Lord, for you I will give my life! But
when the moment of truth came he denied him three times, because when love is
true it’s expensive.
If we fail to fulfill his commandments we will not
be able to love as he loved us. This
is a necessary precondition if we desire to abide in the love of the Lord.
Prayer: Lord,
help me to love until it hurts. Strengthen my fragility in order to obey your Word
and abide in your love. Amen

PERMANEZCAN EN MI AMOR
JUAN 15:9-17
En esto consiste el amor: no en que nosotros hayamos
amado a Dios, sino en que él nos amó a nosotros
1 Juan 4:10
En nuestra cultura cuando decimos a alguien “te amo”
por lo general queremos decir: “te quiero para mí”, y a partir de ahí se
empieza a manipular a la otra persona para poseerla. Pero una cosa muy
diferente es estar dispuesto, por amor, a sacrificarnos por otra persona. Esto
me hace pensar en que no todas las personas entienden lo mismo cuando hablan de
amar.
El criterio para amar en el Antiguo Testamento era: Ama a tu prójimo
como a ti mismo (Lv 19:18), pero ahora Jesús dice a sus seguidores: Ámense
unos a otros, como yo los he amado, y ese amor consiste en poner la vida
por nuestros amigos. Se trata de un amor
gratuito y creativo, que no siempre estamos preparados o dispuestos a
practicar, a pesar de llamarnos cristianos.
Tomás dijo a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos
con él, pero lejos estaba Tomás de aceptar con gusto este sacrificio. Pedro
dijo: ¡Señor, por ti daré mi vida!, pero al llegar el momento de la
verdad le negó tres veces, porque el amor cuando es verdadero es caro.
Si no cumplimos sus mandamientos no podremos amar como él nos amó,
es una precondición necesaria si queremos permanecer en el amor del Señor.
Oración: Señor, ayúdame a amar hasta que duela. Fortalece mi fragilidad para
obedecer tu Palabra y permanecer en tu amor. Amén.
