LEAVE PREJUDICES ASIDE
ACTS 17:10-15
These were more receptive than those in Thessalonica,
for they
welcomed the word very eagerly and examined
the scriptures
every day to see whether these things were so.

How good it is that perseverance was one of the characteristics
of missionaries like Paul and Silas. Recently they’d had a very upsetting
experience in a synagogue in Thessalonica where certain Jews responded
violently to the announcement of the good news of Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, on
arriving at the synagogue to preach in Berea they received a warm welcome.
How many times in our lives do we judge someone by the way they have
behaved, while exempting ourselves from the same scrutiny? On how many occasions have our prejudices
raised barriers such that we have not been able to do what’s right simply for
“knowing” we’re going to be rejected?
Let us follow the example of Paul and Silas and bring the Word
of God to wherever we go, including those places where we think it will be futile.
It will be God, not we, who opens the doors.
The converts in Berea represented a challenge for Paul and Silas
as well since they intimately studied the Scriptures to confirm what the
evangelists had taught. This assuredly implied a greater preparation on their
part to explain and defend Jesus’ new doctrine. We learn too from this that on dispelling
our prejudices we provide the means for spiritual growth and a more grounded
faith.
Prayer: God of life, wrest from
us the prejudices that inhibit our vision in our ministry to spread your Word. Amen.

Dejar a un lado los
prejuicios
Hechos 17:10-15
Y éstos eran más nobles que los de Tesalónica, pues
recibieron
la palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando cada día
las Escrituras para saber si esto era así.

Qué bueno que una de las características de los
misioneros como Pablo y Silas, era la perseverancia. Ellos recién habían tenido
una muy mala experiencia en una sinagoga en Tesalónica, donde ciertos judíos
respondieron violentamente al anuncio de la buena noticia de Jesucristo. Sin
embargo, al llegar a Berea, van también allí a la sinagoga para predicar y
tienen una buena acogida.
En cuántas ocasiones de nuestras vidas calificamos a algunos por la manera
en que se han conducido sus semejantes y no ellos mismos. En cuántas ocasiones
nuestros prejuicios han levantado barreras tales que no hemos sido capaces de
hacer el bien sólo por “saber” que vamos a ser rechazados. Sigamos el ejemplo
de Pablo y Silas, y llevemos la Palabra de Dios a todo lugar, incluso a aquellos
en los que pensamos que será una labor inútil. Dios será el que abra las
puertas, no nosotros mismos.
Los conversos de Berea también representaron un reto para Pablo y Silas
pues ellos estudiaron en profundidad las Escrituras para comprobar lo enseñado
por los evangelistas. Esto seguramente implicó una mayor preparación para
explicar y defender la nueva doctrina de Jesús. De aquí también aprendamos que
al despejarnos de prejuicios a la vez damos paso al crecimiento espiritual y a
una mayor solidez de la fe.
Oración: Dios de la vida, quita de nosotros los prejuicios
que nos restan visión en nuestro ministerio de anunciar tu Palabra. Amén.
