ANGELS AND SHEPHERDS

Luke 2:8-20

“Let the heavens be glad and let the earth rejoice

…before the Lord, for he is coming.”

Psalm 96:11 and 13

The first to celebrate the birth of Jesus were a few shepherds outside the city of Bethlehem. The Lord God announced the arrival of the Good Shepherd to those bone-weary shepherds who were watching their sheep for the sacrifices in the Temple. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord brightly surrounded them, and they were afraid. But an angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for I give you news of great joy for all the people: for today is born to you in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Verses 9-11)

Angels always have something gracious to say. Imagine that you were surprised by a celestial messenger, and that then he said to you, “Be not afraid.” Those poor shepherds were “terribly frightened,” terrorized, then the angel calms them so they may hear the true meaning of Christmas.

The good news is that the “Savior, who is Christ the Lord” has been born. The angel tells them, “Today, in the city of David, is born to you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (V. 11) The story of Christmas tells us that “there is salvation in no other, because humanity has not been given any other name below heaven by which we may reach salvation.” (Acts 4: 2)

The mystery of Bethlehem, the Christ child, is the manifestation of a single act which exceeds all human understanding: the incarnation of God, that is, God made man.

Los primeros en celebrar el nacimiento de Jesús  fueron algunos pastores fuera de la ciudad de Belén. El Señor Dios anunció la llegada del Buen Pastor a estos pastores de huesos cansados que estaban cuidando las ovejas para los sacrificios del Templo. “Y se les presentó un ángel del Señor y la gloria del Señor los rodeó de resplandor, y tuvieron gran temor. Pero el ángel les dijo: —No temáis, porque yo os doy nuevas de gran gozo, que será para todo el pueblo: que os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor” (v. 9-11).

Los ángeles siempre tienen algo gracioso que decir. Imagínese que usted sea sorprendido por un mensajero celestial, y entonces él te dice: “Deje de tener miedo.” Estos pobres pastores estaban “terriblemente asustados”, llenos de terror, de temor entonces  el ángel los calma para que puedan escuchar el verdadero significado de la Navidad.

La buena noticia es que el “Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor” ha nacido. El ángel les dijo: “os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor.” (v. 11). La historia de la Navidad nos dice que "en ningún otro hay salvación, porque no se ha dado a la humanidad ningún otro nombre bajo el cielo mediante el cual podamos alcanzar la salvación" (Hechos 4:12).

El misterio de Belén, el niño Jesús, es la manifestación de un hecho único que sobrepasa todo conocimiento humano: la encarnación de Dios; es decir, Dios hecho hombre.
