ABUNDANT LIFE

Matthew 5:1-12

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Much has been said in the last several decades about the importance of Human Rights. In effect, every day there are different attacks on the right to life, to an education, to the freedom to work and to association, to the inviolability of privacy, etc.  Indeed, one need ask:  What are Human Rights and how have they evolved throughout the length of human History?

We call Human Rights the total of inherent guarantees or fundamental rights that belong to every human being, solely on account of being a human, in light of one’s dignity and as the essence of the human race.  Human rights are characterized by constituting constitutional guarantees that are invisible, interdependent and minimal, that establish the limits of authority to intervene in the life of the people and of individuals.  These are found within and recognized by the Constitution of every country and are protected by International Law.

The gospel of John has a verse that summarizes the definition of human rights: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) God is the God of life, and Jesus Christ came to give it to us to the full.  From Him alone can we have that life abundant in righteousness and love.

Prayer: Lord, may the rights of all human beings, created in your image and likeness, be respected everywhere.

VIDA ABUNDANTE

Mucho se ha hablado en las últimas décadas de la importancia de los Derechos Humanos. Al respecto, todos los días existen diferentes atentados al derecho a la vida, a la educación, a la libertad de trabajo y asociación, a la inviolabilidad de la vida privada, etc. En definitiva, cabe preguntarse ¿Qué son los Derechos Humanos y cuál ha sido su evolución a lo largo de la Historia?

Denominamos Derechos Humanos al conjunto de garantías inherentes o derechos fundamentales, que pertenecen a cada persona, por el sólo hecho de serlo, en virtud de su dignidad y como integrante de la especie humana. Los derechos humanos se caracterizan por constituir garantías constitucionales indivisibles, interdependientes y mínimas, que establecen los límites a la autoridad para intervenir en la vida de los pueblos y las personas, que por ende, se encuentran reconocidos por la Constitución de cada país y amparados por el Derecho Internacional.

El evangelio de Juan tiene una frase que puede resumir todo lo que son los derechos humanos: “Yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia” (Juan 10,10). Dios es el Dios de la vida, y Jesucristo vino para dárnosla en plenitud. Sólo de Él podemos tener esa vida total en la justicia y el amor.

Oración: Señor, que los derechos de todos los seres humanos, creados a tu imagen y semejanza, puedan ser respetados en cualquier parte.
